In present time we have seen a rise in the coverage being presented to us as a society about people being charged for drunk driving and making reckless decisions more often than one thinks. Society has a problem of drivers choosing to drink and drive without thinking of possible life changing consequences, until a horrific event happens. This problem can be dealt with by educating society and providing more classes, additional resources, information, and awareness on this subject.
Drunk driving has become a countrywide problem and a health hazard to every human being, regardless if one is on a vehicle or not. This problem has become more obvious now because of the coverage we have via different screens like news, social media among others. Studies presented and evaluated show a positive change when it comes to consequences of drinking and driving. According to David J. Deyoung, “Treatment programs like mandated classes, fines, and driver's license suspensions have shown a decrease of 7-9% in those being charged with DUI countrywide”. An offender that is charged with a DUI will lose their license and have a suspension for a period of time depending on the alcohol concentration and additionally must have an SR-22 automobile insurance. This insurance must not have a lapse of coverage for a period of three years, or the driver’s license of the offender will be re suspended and the driver must have to pay additional reinstatement fees to the DMV. This has proved to be an effective consequence to many individuals. Losing your driving privileges can be a financial hardship for those involved. One needs their driver's license for basic daily needs like driving to get groceries, take children to school and activities, getting to and from work among others.
