Privacy concerns are becoming more and more prominent as the world continues to advance methods of surveillance. Drones are one of the most advanced methods of surveillance and the number of them is growing rapidly. The FAA predicted that there will be about 10,000 civilian drones in the US in the next three years. (CNS News)
Drones are becoming more and more accessible to people all over the world. They are relatively cheap and one does not currently need a license to fly one. This allows civilians and government officials alike the ability to safely survey people from above. This number is inflicting real concerns about privacy on people everywhere. As of right now, there are very few regulations on the number or use of drones.

“Pilots around the United States have reported a surge in near-collisions and other dangerous encounters with small drones in the past six months…” (Whitlock). These close calls are occurring more frequently and are more of a problem than previously thought. On January 26, a drone crashed on the lawn of the White House. Although the drone crash was an accident, it is still causing concern regarding the safety of the president and the general public. Regarding this incident, Senator Charles Schumer said that “There is no stronger sign that clear FAA guidelines for drones are needed," (qtd. in Reuters). On December 1, 2013, Amazon announced their idea to deliver packages in 30 minutes or less using drones, called Amazon Prime Air. This idea seems like science-fiction, but there are issues regarding safety which is why it has not been launched yet. There is the possibility that the drones would run into other aircraft in the sky or that the drones would not land on the ground. The FAA is working on getting the drones ready for flight by the end of this year. The general manager at Amazon, Dave Graybeal, says that "The FAA is the biggest hurdle," (qtd. in Albany Business
We still have a long way to go for technology to fully function. Commercial drone technology is currently under construction. The FAA is still working on how to regulate the drones in airspace. But looking at the recent developments I am pretty sure that commercial drone technology will definitely be available by 2019 -2020. The technology will be a lot more sophisticated than what we see right now.
Drones and UAVs are remote control vehicles that need no pilot, instead they use a signal coming from a machine that someone is controlling. Although that is not always been the case for drones, the technology in its primitive stage was available during the late 1800’s. It was seen during the civil war in the form of hot air balloons and both north and south possessed a way to create the machines. They contained a timed mechanism that would release an explosive when the time was over, this seemed very clever, but at the time it was not very effective. Years passed and the Wright brothers and created the airplane in the early 1900’s, and they did needed pilots. The concept of airplanes was moved to the next level when in the 1930’s Britain Royal Navy created one of the first UAVs. This particular UAV was know as “The Queen Bee’’. This particular model was driven by what is said to be a radio signal. Much later Drones became much more complex and that is because years of technological advances were added to old models that were being produced in late 1900’s. Today, ...
Evidence: Drones have many beneficial uses, including in search-and-rescue missions, scientific research, mapping, and more. But deployed without proper regulation, drones equipped with facial recognition software, infrared technology, and speakers capable of monitoring personal conversations would cause unprecedented invasions of our privacy rights. Interconnected drones could enable mass tracking of vehicles and people in wide areas. Tiny drones could go completely unnoticed while peering into the window of a home or place of worship.
What are the pros and cons of drone delivery? Well, there aren’t many cons, but there are many pros. For example, forget overnight shipping when you could get your package delivered on the same day you ordered it by drone (just pay the extra $50)! Companies like Amazon and Google X (aka Google) have been testing out drone delivery. So, if you need your package the same day you purchased it (I don’t understand why you would unless you are a bad person and you forgot to buy a gift for someone), and you want to break out the extra $50 off your credit card, than this is for you! But, once again, it's in testing so yeah.
Drones will guard and attack anybody that illegally passes into guarded territory. According to ProCon.org, “.it is estimated that 174-1,047 civilians have been killed in Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia since the U.S. began conducting drone strikes abroad following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.” Now you may think that's a lot, but that only comes out to be about 13-75 civilian casualties per year from 2001-2015. They are so accurate, that a drone could strike a house surrounded by crowded houses and the houses remain untouched.
“FALL BACK!” The soldier, pinned down in Afghanistan, has no way out. He looks back to his fellow Marines, a terrorized look on his face. The enemy approaches, and he can’t move. As if by a miracle, the incoming terrorists are quickly neutralized by an overhead drone, saving the soldier's life and allowing him to return back to his comrades. This, an example of one of the many uses of drones today, serves to show how much of an impact drones can have. A drone, or UAV, is a pilotless craft that is controlled by a remote (“Drone” 2015). As technology advances, the use of drones becomes progressively more prominent. Drones, an extremely useful tool, have a multitude of uses.
Secondly, according to Bezos, 53% of all Amazon’s shipped products weight five pounds or less, and therefore, Amazon is planning on launching the delivery drone which can carry such weight within 10 miles of their Fulfilment Centers (FCs), and should greatly increase customer satisfaction because of a great decrease in delivery time (30 minutes delivery time) (Amazon Web Services 2012).
Have you ever looked in the sky and saw a type of aircraft that looked too compact to be an actual plane and looked nothing like a helicopter. Well, that aircraft that you saw, was probably a drone. Since the terrorist attack September 11, 2001, the United States have been using drones to carry out missions like killing terrorist group members all over the world. There are numerous pros and cons of utilizing drones and not everyone conquers with using them on the battlefield. Drones should be used against our enemies around the world.
Some of the most common misconceptions about drones arise due to the lack of knowledge about what drones are. A drone is a remote controlled, pilotless aircraft that can be used to survey an area, conduct stealth missions, and deliver supplies into difficult to reach areas (Drone). Unmanned aircrafts are also, contrary to popular belief, not solely machines that kill without even a thought to who is being fired upon. They have proved to be effective surveillance units in areas that may be dangerous for manned aircrafts to fly, along with the potential to be reliable delivery units (Drones). With the new delivery capabilities, the time it takes for packages to be delivered across long distances could be cut down to a matter of hours...
Another name for drones are Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVS). These are “aircraft either controlled by ‘pilots’ from the ground or increasingly, autonomously following a pre-programmed mission” (Cole 4). Even though there are many unique types of drones, but they usually fall under two main categories: ones that are armed and equipped with missiles and bombs and others that are used for surveillance. In the past couple of years the use of drones has increased dramatically. The reason being because “unlike manned aircraft they can stay aloft for many hours and are flown remotely so there is no danger to the flight crew” (Cole 13). There are drones that can actually fly over more than fifty hours. In countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq, the Predator and U.S Reaper are physically there. Cause of the power of technology th...
In the United States, people worried that drones would be used near their home because they equip with a camera and that make people feel restless or uncomfortable when a drone nearby. A lot of people don’t realize that drones flying around neighbor are not much,
Drones are an emerging technology that has countless benefits and a myriad of intangible side-effects. I will clearly explain how drones effect on our lives by exploring the Social, Cultural, Political and Environmental impacts drone technology presents in our lives today.
