In 2015 alone there were “3,185,996,155” internet users and today those numbers are still growing (“Internet Users”). With that in mind, internet privacy is a bigger issue than ever thanks to everyone’s obsession with technology. We now live our lives on the internet constantly posting, blogging, Tweeting, Facebooking, and Youtubeing. The list goes on and on. Each time we do these things we give away more and more information. This constant feed of data allows the government to track specious activity. But, many people feel that the constant monitoring is violating their privacy and human rights. They also just feel weird about it in general, like a “Big Brother” situation. Although the founding philosophers never discussed the internet directly, many of their core philosophies still apply and can help us better understand the issues at hand. But, with an increase in connection, comes an increase in crimes, specifically cyber crime. Cyber crime is defined as any crime that occurs via the internet or any computer network. Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) “works with other federal agencies to conduct high-impact criminal investigations to disrupt and defeat cyber criminals, prioritize the recruitment and training of technical experts, develop standardized methods, and broadly share cyber response best practices and tools” (Homeland Security). The DHS’s tracking can prevent things like cyber financial attacks. How would you feel if you logged into your bank account, which had your life savings in it, to find out its has all been funneled to an account in Asia? NOT GOOD, and that is what the DHS’s cyber division does, it is constantly on the look out for cyber financial crimes, and tries to insure that you are not robbed
