Chronic diseases are conditions of long durations and generally slow progression such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and asthma. They are the leading causes of death, disabilities and rising health care costs in the United States and as well as in other countries of the world. However, the good news is that chronic diseases are all preventable. The World Health Organization has estimated that if major risk factors for chronic diseases were eliminated, at least, 80% of all heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes would be prevented and more than 40% of people with cancer would be avoided. Under the leadership of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City made improving citizen health a top priority. In my opinion, I totally agree with Mayor Mike Bloomberg that common ground can be found between health promotion and chronic disease prevention.

He promoted “the Salads in School” initiative which provided low-height salad bars to elementary schools across the city’s five boroughs. In addition, he implemented changes in all areas of life for New Yorkers by proposing the ban the sale of sugary drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces in restaurants and other venues, in the move to combat obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles. He urged the U.S. department of Agriculture to exclude soda, some sport drink, and other sugary drinks from food stamp eligibility and for people to use the food stamps to buy products that are nourishing and healthier. In 2006, New York City Board of Health approved his plans to ban trans fat in cooking oil within the city’s 24,000 food establishments. Going a little further, Mayor Bloomberg introduced initiative for chain restaurants to display calorie information on menus and menu boards for customers to make healthier choices. Multiple stakeholders are affected by this policy. These include New York City patrons, restaurants, the New York Health Department, and public health officials. The Department of Health received 2,200 comments in favor of this policy and 70 comments in opposition. The New York Health Department and public health officials are in favor of this policy. Both groups are responsible for the health of New York City residents. The presence of trans fat in foods creates a dangerous health risk to restaurant goers. Eliminating trans-fat will help minimize preventable hazards to health (1).
Almost everybody on Long Island, and probably all around the world, has been prescribed a drug by a doctor before— whether it was to knock out a nasty virus, or relieve pain post injury or surgery. However, what many people don’t realize is that these drugs can have highly addictive qualities, and more and more people are becoming hooked, specifically teenagers. But when does harmlessly taking a prescription drug to alleviate pain take the turn into the downward spiral of abuse? The answer to that question would be when the user begins taking the drug for the “high” or good feelings brought along with it—certainly not what it was prescribed for (1). The amount of teens that abuse prescription medications has been rapidly increasing in recent
In May of 2012 Mayor Bloomberg announced his portion cap rule proposal (Renwick, 2013). This proposal would ban the sale of sweet and sugary beverages that are over sixteen ounces in size. This ban would affect movie theaters, restaurants, street vendors, and any other commercial entity that is regulated by the New York City health department (Yee, 2013). This proposal is commonly referred to as the New York City Soda Ban.

Cancer in general accounts for 7.6 million deaths all around the globe. Cancer alone stands for thirteen percent of global deaths (Crosta). The percentage for the survival rate of lung cancer is a devastating sixteen percent (Marks)! More females are diagnosed with this cancer over men, but does not mean men cannot get this cancer as well. Actually, my uncle was diagnosed with lung cancer this past Summer. Shockingly, a couple of months later, my cousin, who I call my grandmother was diagnosed

Researchers find that the spending on health care totals about $2.5 trillion which is about 17.5% of America’s gross domestic product: a measure of the value of all goods and services produced in the United States (New Health Insurance).
