Have you ever wanted to punch the daylight out of someone? I know I have! I don't have many hobbies, but there is one hobby that I do that is my favorite, boxing. I have been boxing for almost 3 years. Over the years I have learned that you need to get the correct gear and have the right skills or you may end up hurting yourself. Boxing is my all time favorite hobby, because it is great stress reliever, it keeps you strong, and the equipment that it uses.
Boxing is a great stress reliever but, you may be confused when I say that. Imagine this, you are mad or worked up about something. You get the urge to punch something or someone. Then you walk up to the bag and punch it over and over and over again. When you step away from the bag you realize all those feelings you had before are now gone. This is what I do when I am stressed or need to take my mind off something. Boxing is a considerable sport that takes your mind away from those miserable places.
Moreover, boxing keeps you strong. Think about it like this, you have a 70 pound bag and you are punching it as hard as you can. It’s like lifting weights except you’re not lifting them you are

The main types of gear that you need are boxing gloves, boxing mitts, hand wrap, a heavy weighted bag, a speed bag, and a mouth guard. You need a pair of good boxing gloves so when you hit the bag it bounces off your hand and you don’t get a brawler fracture. (Which is breaking a certain bone in your knuckles, only boxers get it). You also need heavy bag and speed bag, to punch (or you could shadow box but that wouldn’t mimic punching something tough like a human). And last but not least, protective gear. Protective gear can be different for what you are doing. If you are boxing, you need headgear, gloves, a mouth guard, and ankles guards. If you are practicing or sparing with mitts you only need gloves and a mouth

The traditional view of martial arts for most people comes from the movies, either featuring Bruce Lee or possibly the Karate Kid. With those classic references, the martial arts of today would seem quite alien. What was once obscure has now become the mainstream with millions of martial artists of one degree or another. The violence of this sport is far beyond what boxing, or football could ever accomplish; while those sports often cause concussions and the occasional broken bone, some of the martial arts expect their students to break the bones of their opponents if the fight goes out of control or simply by accident. This brutality usually shunned by civilized society, instead served to increase the sports reputation. The popularity of mixed martial arts soared over the last couple of years mainly due to the emergence of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) as the fast growing sport in America. With this popularity of the sport mixed martial art gyms are emerging up all across the country. I visited a local gym to study the fighters, with the intention to understand the mentality that goes along with this profession.
Boxing in the early and mid-twentieth century had an appeal that captured the eyes and ears of millions of Americans. Championship fights and popular fighters were on national television and in newspaper headlines. At the time, boxing was relevant in the American sports world. However, over the past 30 years, boxing has regressed and lost its popularity. Spectacles like the graceful Muhammad Ali and the hard-hitting Mike Tyson are gone and have been replaced by lackluster fighters and greedy fight promoters who only care about their profit cut. On top of that, an increasing pile of evidence is starting to show more clearly the dangers of repeated head trauma and how corrupt the business of boxing has become. Lastly, boxing is pressured by the rapidly growing sport, mixed martial arts (MMA), because of its safer nature and a strong corporate leader. These causes combined will finally cause boxing to die as a sport in America unless serious steps are taken to reform the sport.
“To understand boxing, you have to understand tradition and what it takes to get inside a ring. You have to learn… what goes on inside a fighters head from the time his career begins until the day it ends. You have to grasp the reality of smashed faces and pain, and understand how they can be part of something courageous, exciting, and beautiful…” - Thomas Hauser. There is no better way to put boxing into words. Those that have participated in the sport can tell you that it is a beautiful sport. Ever since boxing first started in modern times, it has been seen as a barbaric sport by many, but only because they see the surface and do not bother to find out more about it. But as Thomas Hauser stated, “ to understand boxing you

My mother and father, at first, did not want me to take the Taekwondo classes because of this fact. It took a lot of begging to finally convince them to let me do it. They realized that it is very important for any child to learn some type of martial arts. It is essential to use for defense. Life is full of troubles, demands, pressures and hassles—these are all factors related to stress. When you are in potential danger, your body responds with a “fight-or-flight” response to protect you from any harm. Situations like being robbed at gunpoint or studying last minute the night before the test can activate stress in your body. Although situations in life can increase stress, there are plenty of methods to diminish it. Methods like meditating, talking to family/friends, drinking tea, or even taking a quick nap--all of these methods are proven effective (The Franklin Institute). One method that is prominent to many is physical exercise. Exercise is considered to improve physical conditions and strength, but maintains mental fitness in the process. Although many assume that exercising is healthy, some may not be familiar of how it relieves stress in detail. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of exercise, the pros and cons must be considered. Some pros are: managing the levels of stress in your body, boosting your self-esteem, and improving learning and memory.
