How many times should I hear those dreaded words, “my mother slapped yours truly for something petty as forgetting to wash the dishes”, due to the fact that they fell asleep whilst completing their homework?” By what means, should young people immerse themselves in depression and pain? As the social worker, one has to obtain a repertoire of skills to identify and examine issues and problems so that it can be best dealt with accordingly. It’s the responsibility of the Social Worker, to aid diverse types of individuals, groups’ organizations and family. Within this organization, the objective is to reach out to all walks of life and as the late Michael Jackson said: “Heal the world make it a better place.” It is a place where children and young teenagers can receive counselling, hurting women, whether married or single with a family can find solace, substance abusers can find treatment, where the mentally ill and elderly can be assisted. Furthermore, education and skills can be obtained and job opportunities can be given within the communities. This Organization also seeks to educate the public about various issues that are steadily increasing in the Commonwealth of Dominica. These are included and not limited to Women and Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse, Mental and Elderly Abuse, AIDS, etc.

There are many reasons why I would love to become a social worker. However, it is sort of difficult to pinch point how or why I became attracted to this specific profession. Nevertheless, most of the particles in my body argue that it would have to stem back to experiences I have encountered growing up. I would like to begin by saying that graduating high school I was unsure where I was going or where I would end up. My mother who always had high expectations for me persuaded me to at least attempt pursing a college education. I then decided to enroll Guttman Community College @ CUNY, where I was appointed a Student Success Advocate (S.S.A). My S.S.A saw something in me that I had yet to figure out. Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. I would to begin this paper with an authentic definition of the Social Work field. Social work practices involves facilitating change—in other words, working with others, not doing something to them or for them(Dubois). Most people and social workers would always use the world ‘help’ in some way or form when defining social workers. Which is true but the confusion come in when asked where they work, who they assist and how they differ from other helping professions. Social workers can be sustain abuse therapists, child welfare specialists, and school social workers. We are not limited to just the department of social services. Second Start Alternative High School is an educational setting for teens who struggle with the structure of a traditional high school. Many of the students struggle with emotional and behavioral disabilities that can hinder academic success. Additionally, many of the students are affected by outside factors that are beyond their control such as familial stressors. Second Start’s goal is to provide students with a safe place to get their needs met while also delivering them with an education. The social work courses that I have taken prior to my placement have provided me with the knowledge and skills to be successful with the students at Second Start.
