No! This has to end! How many more of one’s friends need to suffer sexual abuse at the hand of their relatives? How many times should I hear those dreaded words, “my mother slapped yours truly for something petty as forgetting to wash the dishes”, due to the fact that they fell asleep whilst completing their homework?” By what means, should young people immerse themselves in depression and pain? Notwithstanding, that to cope is to smoke and drink beyond their limits. These are just a few of the questions that often bombard my mind as I incessantly encounter these circumstances. As the social worker, one has to obtain a repertoire of skills to identify and examine issues and problems so that it can be best dealt with accordingly. It’s the responsibility of the Social Worker, to aid diverse types of individuals, groups’ organizations and family. Furthermore, finding solutions and improve the quality of their lives, whether there is a need for food and housing to be provided or assistance for education or even that of counselling. Though not every situation, problem or issue would be resolved, but the goal is to make society a better place to live in as time goes by with the necessary resources available. Within this organization, the objective is to reach out to all walks of life and as the late Michael Jackson said: “Heal the world make it a better place.” It is a place where children and young teenagers can receive counselling, hurting women, whether married or single with a family can find solace, substance abusers can find treatment, where the mentally ill and elderly can be assisted. Furthermore, education and skills can be obtained and job opportunities can be given within the communities. This Organization also seeks to educate the public about various issues that are steadily increasing in the Commonwealth of Dominica. These are included and not limited to Women and Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse, Mental and Elderly Abuse, AIDS, etc.
To conclude, the reason I want to be a Social worker is due to the reason that Social work is a unique profession rich with meaning, action, and the power to make a difference. Social workers pull communities together, help individuals and families find solutions, advance changes in social policy, promote social justice, and foster human and global
