Autism, or a disorder of social and functional challenges (‘Facts about ASD’), affects about 1 in every 68 children in the world today (‘Facts about ASD’). More than 3.5 million Americans have some form of the disorder, although autism only takes up 1 percent of the world (‘Facts and Statistics’). The cause of autism has not yet appeared to scientists, but they have developed different ways of living for the mother to do before she gets pregnant, after she gets pregnant and after the baby’s birth to prevent autism arising in a child (‘Can Autism Be Prevented?’). Autism robs children and adults of the rights they have to walk, talk, and think like normal humans do every single day. My personal experience with autism showed me what the condition …show more content…
The woman who wants to get pregnant should give herself six months to a year to change her diet and lifestyle. Taking white foods, preservatives and processed food out of the diet should help to start the process of changing the dietary side, as well as cutting sugar, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco out (‘Minimizing Risks’, ‘Avoiding Toxic Exposures During Pregnancy’). Losing weight helps to prevent risks once the woman becomes pregnant, and daily exercise helps to improve blood flow. (‘Before Pregnancy’). Around the house, the woman and her spouse should minimize toxins in cleaning, as well as changing to eco-friendly cleaning products for surfaces and for personal care. Probiotics, vitamins and Omega-3s taken regularly should help, and avoiding mercury, the flu shot and pesticides (‘Minimizing Risks’). After becoming pregnant, the woman should continue her diet and take vitamins and antibiotics, as well as consuming more protein. Finding a midwife and having a natural birth at home can help, as well as avoiding ultrasounds during the pregnancy and inductions or pain medications during labor. Children born by cesarean section have a higher risk of having autism than babies delivered naturally. Even though a cesarean section may seem easier, it has more potential to cause harm in the end for the baby (‘During Pregnancy’, ‘Minimizing Risks’). Bonding with the baby after its …show more content…
With this, I now understand the condition and also understand more how to reach out to my aunt because she did not cause this to happen to her. I have a change of heart now that I understand more about autism, and I wish that others in the world would know what I know now because they would reach out to those with this condition as I want
Autism is a developmental disorder that appears within the first three years of a child’s life. It affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Autism affects 1 out of 68 children. It is also the fastest growing disability in the United States. There are multiple types of Autism, some children are considered high functioning, and some are low functioning. “High functioning” is when a child with autism can function in life, and completes jobs, and chores with little to no help. “Low functioning” is when a child with autism cannot complete simple daily tasks without help, and (or) constant supervision.
Every single day is a struggle for an autistic child and his or her family. Autism affects all aspects of a child’s life from their ability to show affection to their family to being able to do simple tasks such as communicating and thinking in ways that we take for granted. Autism is defined as a developmental disability in which children experience abnormalities in social functioning, language, often act in puzzling ways, and usually appears before the age of three (Mash &Wolfe, 2010). Although the exact causes of autism are unknown there does seem to be a strong genetic component. Having a child or family member with autism is a constant battle of emotion and frustration. Everyone wants to help the people they love when they have difficulty adapting but the difficulty in helping a child with autism arises in the fact that these children do not think or process information like everyone else does making it very difficult to reach them and help them function in a society they don’t understand. Skinner (1963) and his early work led the way in finding a method for assisting people with autism and aiding them in gaining wider ranges of functioning and better quality of life.

Most child dream of being superheroes. But Christine Enockson wanted to be a real world superhero, a teacher. Living in a small Wisconsin town, it was rare for there to be a child with special needs. Once Christine, or Chris as many people call her, discovered how school was different for these children, she passionately pursued a career to help those children. This passion led her to decide to be a foster parent. Throughout her life, Chris has made a difference in the lives of many children, including her own. Even though Chris has faced many hardships in her life, she continues to stay positive because of her faith. Chris’s help with special needs children and foster care have helped her faith cultivate and she is currently inspiring others
Looking around tons of children are incapable of providing for themselves, thanks to fast food causing autism. Fast food is the cause of several current issues, one being autism. Because of fast food industries’ nonstop need to utilize processed materials as nourishment, which is a leading cause of autism spectrum disorder, children all over America suffer.[2&3] Autism owns its very own causes and effects, but before something can create a repercussion, it must develop. Autism has causes, effects, and development. There are multiple ways of development for autism, all leading to the depressing result of ADHD, SPED programs, or down syndrome. Autism commonness has shot up since the 1980’s. The additives in fast food are also another chemical, relating to the causes of autism. The effects of autism are SPED programs, which isolates the children from the rest of their school, resulting in future social awkwardness, speech impediments, and more unusual and almost unfixable effects. When no two autism diseases are the same, it is overly difficult to discover a cure, having very few antidotes, already. There are different stages of autism spectrum disorder,
A couple of autistic children tend to excel in intelligence as about 40% have above average intellectual disabilities (“What is Autism,1”). Their talent is also impressive, “Many of the positively affected excel in visual skills, music, math and art” (“What is Autism,1”). ASD proves to be a disorder that may luckily impact a person’s life in a positive manner. Despite there being some positivity in autism, there is also a negative side. Autistic children may struggle in their daily lives as “ASD causes difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues” (“What is Autism,2”).The disorder causes abnormalities that create uncomfortability such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances (“What is Autism,2”). ASD also has the ability to antagonize life. ASD will either positively affect someone’s life, or make it an
Autism is a disability that interferes with the normal development of the human brain in the areas of reasoning, social interaction and communication skills, typically appearing during the child's first three years (“What is Autism?”, the Autism pages 2004, from the Autism society of America). It occurs in roughly 15 to 20 of every 10,000 births and is five times more common in males than in females (“Autism: What to look for”, pamphlet by the Autism Society of the Phils.). Although recent advances have been made with respect to possible roots, the exact cause of this condition remains unknown. Children and adults with autism typicall...
Autism is a complex condition that lacks an established method of prevention thus there is a need for research to identify its possible causative factors. Identification of environmental factors is the first step in preventing and mitigating risks by primary prevention. [1] Statistical estimates show that one out of every 88 individuals in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism. The condition may be defined as a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder that first becomes prevalent in an individual during his/her early childhood. Consequently, autism results in a patient experiencing a life that is marked by the ongoing challenge of its negative effects on communication and interaction with others. The disorder is debilitating for the patient and immensely challenging for his/her family. An initial diagnosis of autism occurs as an individual is noticeably unable to achieve certain early childhood milestones in terms of communication and socialization. Furthermore, while the incidence and the prevalence of autism also tend to rise on an ever-increasing basis, public health concerns over the diso...
In the United States, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that between 1 in 80 and 1 in 240, for an average of 1 in 110 children have an autism spectrum disorder, “ASD” (Nirv, Shah 2011). According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, up to six out of every 1,000 children may be diagnosed with some form of autism. In addition, boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism. This means that as many as 1.5 million Americans today are believed to have some form of autism. Unfortunately, the numbers appear to be increasing rapidly. Autism is a disability that frequently appears during the first three years of life. It is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain and impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills (Bee & Boyd, 2009). It is the most prevalent developmental disorder to date. Autism is one of five disorders coming under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by "severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development," including social interaction and communications skills (Zager, 2006). The etiology of autism is a topic of controversial debate, while researchers strive to achieve a common objective. The goal is to identify the cause of autism to understand the complex interplay between environment and gene regulation (NCBI, 2009). Although individuals with autism have existed for many centuries it was not recognized and labeled until mid 20th century. Therefore, early detection, intervention and an individual educational plan are essentials for the progress of ASD.
Understanding autism, which is professionally known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, otherwise known as (ADS) can be a difficult task, especially for someone who is not trained in helping persons with disabilities. The first person to discover autism was a child psychiatrist, Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. He names the spectrum disorder after the Greek word autos, meaning of or for oneself, due to the way the child display social avoidance. Many doctors’ believed in the past that autism was caused by the way the mother not caring for her child properly or ignoring him or her. There was also a time when it was thought to be caused by certain environmental stresses that cause neurological issues within the brain. Autism is one of the most misunderstood
Autism is a problem that people have with communicating. It can affect many contrasting types of people in divergent ways and there is not yet a complete cure for it. People need to know about this disability and what people can do with people who have it.
WKU- The life of an autism student is not always easy, but it is possible with help and confidence within yourself.
Autism in the United States is more common than some may think. Statistics show that every 1 in 68 people have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and it is steadily rising. Many of these individuals affected with ASD have trouble functioning in their day to day lives because of a lack of understanding, support, and resources. There are numerous programs and services offered around the country that have similar missions, which is to provide those with autism and their families with the support and resources they need to function in today’s society.
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
Autism is a brain disorder that limits a person's ability to relate and communicate with the world and with other people. It first appears in young children. Some people can navigate their world, some have exceptional abilities, while others struggle to speak. Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) affect about one in 68 children, and strikes nearly five times as many boys as girls. (A visual guide to autism) Autism rates in developing countries have risen greatly in the past 20 years. For children born in 1992, according to the U.S. CDC, about 1 in 150 would be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. For children born in 2004, about 1 in 68 children would receive an ASD diagnosis. It’s hard to compare autism rates of the 1990s and 2000s with
