Most child dream of being superheroes. But Christine Enockson wanted to be a real world superhero, a teacher. Living in a small Wisconsin town, it was rare for there to be a child with special needs. Once Christine, or Chris as many people call her, discovered how school was different for these children, she passionately pursued a career to help those children. This passion led her to decide to be a foster parent. Throughout her life, Chris has made a difference in the lives of many children, including her own. Even though Chris has faced many hardships in her life, she continues to stay positive because of her faith. Chris’s help with special needs children and foster care have helped her faith cultivate and she is currently inspiring others

“I always knew I wanted to be a teacher,” she stated. Her passion for helping children with special needs was developed at a later age. The reason why Chris decided to be a special education teacher was because of two twin boys in her grade who had special needs. Chris was only in kindergarten at the time, but she recalls that one of these boys did not get to go to school. The other boy, Jimmy, could come to school, but he would have to leave halfway through the school day. Chris was confused and upset about how Jimmy could not be at school and asked her mom about this. The reason why Jimmy and his brother were not able to be at school was because there was no special education program available. This moment, even though she was in kindergarten, shaped Chris’s plan for her life.
Chris and her husband, Carl, also participate in foster care. Initially, they started foster care because they did not know if they were going to have kids. “We knew God wanted us to have kids,” she explained. There is also a tremendous need for foster parents. Because of this, Chris and Carl decided to fill out an application to be foster parents. Three days later they had their first baby. She recently encouraged a pastor at her church to foster and now, he and his wife, have a baby whom they absolutely love. According to her, there are many important traits a foster parent must have. One of these is self-confidence because the parent must be able to leave their struggles behind in order to help the child to their best ability. The parent must also be strong mentally. Although it may be tough to raise children, but one must need strength to get through it. The foster parent must also understand that they will not always feel rewarded with this role. Another ability a person must have is to be able to grow a strong relationship in order to help the child thrive. A foster parent must be able to set a routine, however, they can not be a perfectionist because in raising children, there is no perfection. The most important trait of a good foster parent is the ability to love unconditionally. The child may not be able to love their foster parent at the current point in their life.
