Cruelty-free is a label used for products that has not been tested on animals before distribution. Many modern cosmetic companies are now using the label cruelty-free and have abandoned animal testing and have implemented alternatives. Using blood samples from human volunteers and artificial skin developed in a laboratory are some ways that cosmetic companies can test for possible skin reactions without the use of live animal subjects. People who are passionate about animal rights should support cruelty-free makeup companies by purchasing cosmetics only from those companies. Alternatives to animal testing replace procedures that use animals, reduce the number of animals used in testing, and minimize pain endured by animals. Not all cruelty-free cosmetics can be considered vegan. If beeswax, carmine, elastin, silk powder, uric acid from mammals, or pearl powder is listed as an ingredient in a makeup product it contains animal products and cannot be worn by practicing vegans. However, if a cosmetic company tests on animals it also cannot be considered vegan even if no animal products are used in the formulation of a product. …show more content…

Over the past couple of years many companies of these cosmetic products released that they are against animal testing including LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, The Body Shop, and many others. There are still companies that still do test with animals; over 250 on PETA’s website. A large percent of these are well-known companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Estee Lauder, Procter & Gamble, L’Oreal, and others that may surprise the consumer. The majority of these companies are producing the same products yet using different animal testing results. This causes the number of test subjects to be substantially larger than what is needed. The number of tests being conducted could be reduced if these companies either become anti animal testing or share results with other companies. This idea might seem like a long-shot since sharing information with their competitors seems ridiculous. If you take a step back from looking at each individual company, you’ll see that they are all conducting similar tests with similar products. Sharing results of these tests with other companies potentially selling similar products, with the same ingredients, will result in a large drop in animal testing (Search for Cruelty-Free
When I was little my teachers would ask me “Cora, What do you want to be when you grow up”? In reality, I couldn’t make up my mind on what I wanted to be ‘when I grew up’. When I was around seven, I went from wanting to be a Veterinarian to being an Astronaut, then back to a Veterinarian again. Around age 10, I wanted to be a dentist, even though I hate mouths. Then I wanted to be a Veterinarian again. Junior Year of high school came and when we started to research colleges and careers I heard that Premed programs were so hard to get into, and I wasn’t fooling anyone with my grades. I did some research on Veterinarians and I discovered that the Veterinarians don’t really handle the animals like I thought they did. Then I learned about Veterinary Technicians, they do so much with the animals. I
Recently, the fight for animal rights and to stop cosmetic testing on animals, has had a huge victory. The EU (European Union) passed a law in March 2013, making it illegal to sell any cosmetics or cosmetics ingredients that have been tested on animals, which in turn, makes companies all across the globe abandon animal testing for cosmetics if they want to sell cosmetics in the European Union ("Cosmetics and Household-Product Animal ...
Sadly according to the Humane Society International (HSI) article About Animal Testing “in the United states alone around 26 million animals are tested each year for medical and commercial research” (HSI) even though animal testing is not required to ensure that the cosmetic being sold are safe. From those 26 million animals being tested most are not protected by the federal Animal Welfare Act. The animal welfare act does not include birds, rats and mice bred for research, and it doesn’t include cold-blooded animals. Animals testing should be banned because the animals tested suffer immensely, also animal tested is unethical, and because there are many alternatives.
...ts on animals. China is also in the process of decreasing the amount of animal tested products in circulation as well (“Cosmetics and House-Hold Products Animal Testing”). Even though there are alternatives to using animals in this testing, companies in the United States still continue to torture animals for the sake of beauty. There are plenty more ways to experiment with products that do not involve animals in any way, and these tests also produce more reliable information. According to Earth Protect, Tests like this are often cheaper and produce faster results than animal research ever has. For example, there is a model of human cornea tissues that can be subject to eye irritation experiments instead of a rabbit, and there are models of skin cells that can be used for skin irritation tests instead of guinea pigs (“Cosmetic Animal Testing Facts and Alternatives”).
Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Animal cruelty comes in several forms, some of which people do not know. There is animal experimenting, animal abuse, and mistreatment of animals. and through revealing the results from research, one discovers the horrific effects of animal abuse.
Testing cosmetics on animals is a very controversial issue that has grown over the past years. I believe that cosmetic animal testing is wrong and should be banned because it is cruel, inaccurate, not very reliable, and has been proven to be unnecessary. Approximately 200,000 animals will suffer and die every year for cosmetics around the world. We as a whole have all decided that this is not necessary which is why we stopped making testing on animal cosmetics something that had to be done. Companies still continue to do it. Not only do you have the power to speak up for what you believe in, you can also start to vote with your dollar. Stop and look at your cosmetics to understand where you are voting.
Cosmetics is a very powerful promising industry. People buy different sorts of product for the sake of beauty which is a result of massive profits for this beauty global business. Hidden in this production is the unfortunate situation that animals are getting inhumanely treated. Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year (dosomething.org).There are rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice that are being experimented and tested for the sake of cosmetics. The physical well being of these animals should not be jeopardised for material needs. The U.S should ban animal testing in the Makeup Industry.
Each year, thousands of animals are brutally tortured in laboratories, in the name of cosmetic research. A movement to ban animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been gaining popularity, with many companies hopping on the bandwagon against this research. New alternatives have been developed to eliminate the necessity to test on animals. This is only a small beginning of what is necessary to end these immoral acts. Animal testing in cosmetics is useless and cruel, and can be accomplished by other methods of research to end the suffering of animals.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
...rking has also empowered the traditional activists, like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). PETA is supporting cruelty free companies through their Beauty Without Bunnies Program. When you see their bunny logo, you know the product you are considering is cruelty-free. And, anyone with access to the internet can easily check their website at http://www.mediapeta.com/peta/PDF/companiesdonttest.pdf to find out if a cosmetic company they are interested in is complying with alternative testing or traditional animal testing. Companies currently producing cruelty-free cosmetics include: Lush Cosmetics, Affordable Mineral Makeup, 2nd love cosmetics, Bare Essentials, etc. And new ones keep on popping up. So, the solution is at hand with alternative testing and insisting that companies continue to develop testing methodologies that don’t involve live animals.
Companies could easily use thousands of ingredients that have already been approved and had success with testing on humans, which requires no further testing with animals. It would be appealing as the cruelty-free way would be quicker and the outlook would save a lot of money as well. Are Home Pets caged until starvation? Do they get abandoned or mistreated? Do they get tested on? Many advertisements show us how unfortunate animals are that end up in the wrong home. But why is society not being shown the sheer cruelty of Cosmetic Animal
Many people are ditching their household products like cosmetics and cleaning supplies in favor of cruelty free alternatives. Many people agree that they would be willing to support grocery stores and buy products if they weren’t tested on animals. A great number of people do not like the idea of using products that have been tested on animals and are even disposing any product that has been test on animals to show their rejection of animal tested products. Grocers and producers would make more money if animas were not tested on, which shows that testing on animals is not beneficial to the economy (Murnaghan). It is completely outrageous and cruel to test cosmetics on animals just for the sake of humans looking better.
This would allow the animals to live normal lives. In addition, makeup companies are making an effort to have a variety of cruelty-free items. As stated in Sydney Herald’s article, “[w]hen new customers discover LUSH and hear that our products are not tested on animals, they are horrified to learn that some cosmetics companies are still killing and harming animals.” (Herald). People are becoming more welcoming of the idea of purchasing cruelty-free products in their household.
Cosmetic Testing on Animals Every year, millions of animals suffer and die in painful tests to determine the safety of cosmetics. Substances such as eye shadow and soap are tested on rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, dogs, and other animals, despite the fact that the test results don’t help prevent or treat human illness or injury. Cosmetics are not required to be tested on animals and since non-animal alternatives exist, it’s hard to understand why some companies still continue to conduct these tests. Cosmetic companies kill millions of animals every year to try to make a profit.
