“When the media takes light of street harassment, it reinforces the idea that it’s acceptable, that we’re ‘overreacting’. #EndSHWeek” -Melissa A. Fabello (Rebolini). A hum, whistle, or comment to a woman about their body may seem harmless and a compliment, but the emotional effect is long lasting. It bothers and sticks with them long-term and doesn’t go away. The real problem is that the victim is expected to just get over it and suck it up because it is our fault and we are put to blame (Chapin) but, as a study shows, “catcalling negatively impacts how women think about themselves” (Young). A very strong point, the laws should take that into perspective and make catcalling illegal. However, do women actually enjoy getting catcalled? This essay …show more content…
Most women between the ages of 11 and 17 experience getting catcalled (Sanghani). 84% of women in 22 countries are getting or receiving street harassment before the age of 17 and more than half have been groped! Many other studies have shown that over 99% of American women say that they have been a victim of street harassment and a majority of women in the world have first experienced street harassment before the age of 17. In France, 100% of women say they have been sexually street harassed while taking public transportation at least once (Hairston). Take the case of Catherine Webb, she wrote about how she felt when she got catcalled. Nervous, embarrassed and confused (Webb). A popular film on YouTube based on catcalling really proves how repetitive and creepy it all gets. In the film, Shoshana B. Roberts walks for 10 hours in New York City and got more than 100 catcalls about her physical appearance. Emotionally destroyed, Roberts spent her night crying (Butler). Created by Hollaback - a non-profit organization dedicated to ending street harassment - the YouTube video got known everywhere. The words of the catcall is not what even hurts the worst, it may be just the intention and tone of the caller’s face that really gets to
Sexism is very prevalent in society today. Women are often not seen as wives or girlfriends but more of as a personal maid or sex object to men attracted to her. Men value the looks of a female before anything else. If a woman is dressed more revealing than another there will be more men that get the idea that she’s not the person she actually is. This leads to more sexual harassment between men and women that is often to be thought of as the female 's fault. An example of this when women are cat called on the street and feel ashamed of their appearance but if it was a man in the situation it would be odd. The female is often made to think that she is the one who promoted these advances on herself as evidenced by Bonnie Tsui in “The Undress Code”. The female within the story believes that a sweater that had no sexual intention to it was perceived as the wrong way by a former co-worker which lead to the constant stalking of the female. She did nothing to promote these activities because she did not feel that way towards the man at
There are many people in the world that hate the way something about them looks. So their way of changing that is to undergo a surgery to fix their imperfections. This paper will discuss the prison gang issue that exists in our correctional system. It will list several powerful gangs that populate the prison and jails around the country. Descriptions of the gangs will be given along with their history and courses of action they take to maintain discipline within its culture. From the criminal justice side the discussion will cover issues of safety, temptation and corruption that happen when dealing with the various gangs. Finally this paper will propose some personal solutions I think would help ease some of the issues correction officers and those in the criminal justice system have to deal with daily.

Seeing maimed animals are not pleasant images. Those images sometimes appear across computer and television screens. The advocacy groups who place these images in the public’s view are trying to jolt people into the realization that abuse exists. For every ten seconds that goes by an animal is getting abused (“Animal… Statistics”). One statistic states that “71% of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32% reported their children had hurt or killed animals” (“Animal… Violence”). Animal cruelty comes in several forms, some of which people do not know. There is animal experimenting, animal abuse, and mistreatment of animals. and through revealing the results from research, one discovers the horrific effects of animal abuse.

Why do people bully? Some people bully because they are afraid. When people are afraid of something or someone, they decide to bully. People choose to bully, because they think it make them cool. They think if they bully people, others would want to be like them. They believe it would help them fit in with the people around. They think it would help them be like someone who everyone else look up too. They want their friends to see how bad they are or how bad they try to be. Bullies are not as bad as most people think they are. Some people bully only on small people. You don’t see to many bullies bullying on each other. Even bullies are afraid of each other. The bully think since they are bigger than another person, they have more power. Some people even bully others because they may be getting bullied somewhere else. They may come to school and bully someone else to get their mind off of what some else are doing to them.
Around the world people take to the streets when they think there is an injustice in their country. Almost daily we can see images of protesters on TV, they are openly having their say. The United Nations recognised freedom of expression as a fundamental human right in its human rights declaration of 1948. Long before that though, during the French Revolution in 1789 freedom of speech was enshrined as a citizen’s basic right. But what does it actually mean, freedom of expression? It is the right to express your opinion publically, without fear of punishment. This liberty is understood as an essential part of a democratic society, and for this reason it has been bitterly contested in every society today. In democratic countries such as the US and in Europe freedom of expression is anchored in the constitution. According to the German constitution, everyone has the right to freely express and disseminate his or her opinion by speech, in writing and in images. It also applies to the media, to newspapers as well as to TV and radio broadcasts. Censorship is prohibited in a democracy to prevent opinions and information from being manipulated, but freedom of expression is not guaranteed country. Dictatorships and totalitarian regimes in particular suppress criticism; there are
Should the torture of an innocent animal go unpunished? No, it should not; the real question is to what extent should the perpetrator be punished? The most basic definition of animal abuse is the intentional act of inflicting physical pain, suffering, or death on an animal; this includes monstrous neglect (the act of withholding food and water) that causes an animal to suffer, die, or be put in imminent danger of death. Currently, animal cruelty offenders are not punished to the extent that some believe they should be. Animal cruelty should receive mandatory jail time because the abuse towards an innocent animal is deemed inhumane and oftentimes is a precursor for violence against humans.
Ever wonder what causes bullying? Where it comes from and the damage it does to children? Well in this day and age bullying is a big problem to kids from elementary to high school. Many people might not know that even though bullying happens to some kids early on, they carry it on throughout their entire lives. This is why it is important to stop any act of bullying before it goes too far.
Sexual Harassment/Assault is a growing issue in the U.S. In this paper, I will highlight the meaning of sexual harassment, some of the signs, behavior theories, and concepts of being sexually harassed. The history of sexual harassment dates back to slave days when it didn’t really have a meaning or name, but women activists were protesting against it. I will explore the statistics of sexual harassment and how it occurs more commonly in women. Also, I will share my personal experiences as a teenager dealing with my sister being sexually harassed at her first job.
Bullying has become a serious problem in public schools systems. Being a victim of bullying is a daily struggle for some students. The issue continues to grow, but the question is how to stop bullying from occurring. Many ways have been attempted to stop bullying, but some are more effective than others. Having the students get involved seems to have the most positive effect on the bullying issue in public school systems.
