There are two main theories that help identify a person’s personality type, the introvert or the extravert. These ideas became popular by: Carl Jung, he also believed that people at different times showed both characteristics of the introvert and the extravert. Most people are neither introverts nor extraverts they share a mix of the characteristics that define an introvert or an extravert. An introvert is a person that gathers their energy from within and requires time alone and would prefer to communicate by ways such as email and by writing and maybe texting they seem to prefer not to talk face to face and are not great public speakers. Introverts are often said to be reserved. They are often said to enjoy the quiet and this is what is said to stimulate them and energize them. They are often thinkers and tend to think things through before acting. It is often said that they don’t socialize as well as extraverts, and it is often said that they don’t like large crowds and prefer to be alone. There are great characteristics associated with what is considered to be the introvert such as being a thinker. Someone that thinks things thru before acting is more than likely to make rational decisions. It is also very important to have time alone to self-reflect because if one continually derives their energies from another then they are more than likely to have let downs and never learn to create a life that is balanced. If a person was completely introverted then more than likely they would be very unhappy in the workplace and other situations where they would be continually interacting with people. Other people may not completely understand them because they tend to be reserved and this may make it hard to create friendships. ... ... middle of paper ... ...I have often thought before I spoke but I often think things through before speaking. My husband is example of someone who shares many of the characteristics of the introvert but still displays some of the characteristics of the extravert such as being a great public speaker. He is reserved but he does like to socialize with people and does not mind being in crowds, he prefers his time alone for self-reflection and enjoys the quiet and is a deep thinker, he has many of the characteristics of the introvert but is still somewhat extraverted. Many of the people in our society share the attributes of both the introverts and the extraverts, to me this seems to creates a balanced individual. I believe there are people that may tend to lean toward one way or the other but for most people they tend to have a mix of the elements that define an introvert or an extravert.
Extraverts are people who are relatively sociable and outgoing while on the opposite end individuals who are introverts are people who would much rather enjoy the company of close friends and family. People who are high in agreeableness are more likely to be trustworthy. Those who are high in conscientiousness are goal-oriented. Individuals high in neuroticism
They get energy from being around other people and tend to be more sociable. Those who have larger amounts of this trait also are more likely to be excitable, enjoy starting new conversations, and in general like to be the center of attention. As for those with lower levels of this trait, or introverts, they are the opposite. They have to sometimes retreat from places with large amounts of social interaction in order to recharge. In a social setting they have to expend energy rather than gain it like an extravert.
Extraversion is marked by pronounced engagement with the external world. Extraverts enjoy eing with people, are full of energy, and often experience positive emotions. They tend to be enthusiastic, action-oriented, individuals who are likely to say "Yes!" or "Let's go!" to opportunities for excitement. In groups they like to talk, assert themselves, and draw attention to themselves. (Beaumont 2003)
Extraverts have an energy that is outwards towards people and things (Changing Minds, 2002-2011). They get their motivation from others, need a lot of stimulation, and express their motions (Changing Minds, 2002-2011). Rather than thinking of changing the world they want to change it (Changing Minds, 2002-2011). They have an attitude that is often relaxed and confident and they are understandable and accessible (Changing Minds, 2002-2011). Before thinking they act and like to communicate openly (Changing Minds, 2002-2011). They show energy and enthusiasm (Changing Minds, 2002-2011). They are often seen as shallow and pushy by introverts (Changing Minds, 2002-2011). After reading the first scenario of Joh...
For example, when asked a question at work I often answer with “give me just one second”, or “ill get back to you”. Most introverts need time for internal reflection. A chance to process the question and think about my response. Introverts make great listeners, are studious, and are okay with solitary activities (The Personality Page, n.d.). However, most introverts have a hard time with external communication and are sometimes perceived as being non-social (The Personality Page,
“ …my first concern must be with the two general types I have termed introverted and extraverted. But, in addition, I shall also try to give a certain characterization of those special types whose particularity is due to the fact that his most differentiated function plays the principal role in an individual's adaptation or orientation to life.” (Jung)
Have you ever stopped and wondered why some people seem to have traits that make them come out ahead of others? These people have characteristics that complement each other, these people are neat introverts. The character traits of neat people are defined in the article “Neat People vs. Sloppy People,” by Suzanne Britt, and the characteristics of an introvert are explained in the article “Caring for Your Introvert,” by Jonathan Rauch. Neat introverts are advantageous at life because their characteristics support one another and bring out the best in them. It is similar to how a runner would condition and train before a big race, if it wasn’t for the training that person probably wouldn’t do as well in the race. The same can be said about their
When discussing extraversion-introversion, there does not seem to be a plethora of similarities simply because the two are on opposite ends of the continuum (Peake, 2014, p. 8). Differences on the other hand are identified much easier between the two. One main difference is the way individuals perceive each trait. Extraversion is seen as a good quality and is often used as a positive trait. Although it is not entirely true, introversion is looked at as a negative trait for someone to possess in today’s’ society (Peake, 2014, p. 8). The best way to explain how these two traits differ would be the type of stimuli that motivates
The power of introverts: should society rethink their attitude towards introverted people? Susan Cain, a book author, attorney and a self-described introvert, tries to convince her audience in a passionate talk of the qualities and abilities of introverts. “In a society where extroverted and outgoing persons are in great demand, introverts don’t have an easy life.” claims Susan Cain in her passionate talk at the TED conference in February 2012. For her, the encouragement of introverted people and the awareness that neither reserved, nor extroverted behaviour is the only way, are the most important issues she wants to emphasize.
Introverts tend to be more quiet and reserved and prefer interaction only with close friends. On the
All in all, keep in mind that social relationships are intended to create a balance in life. Extroverts favour the company of others and recharge through social scenes. On the other hand, introverts are able to spend time in social situations but can often become drained and prefer to gain energy by remaining in solitude, but one should never experience such extremes. Therapy can aid in the psychological concerns that instigated the behaviours of social isolation. One is able to re-learn and develop social skills and cognise ways to cope with symptoms.
On the other hand, introverts are people who are concerned with and interested in their own mental life and often perceived as more reserved and less outspoken in groups. Unlike extroverts who are feeling energized when they are around a large group of people, introverts have energy drained from them through human interaction. Hence, it is essential for them to spend some alone time to “recharge”. Al...
someone thinks of an introvert they tend to think of someone extremely reserved and farouche. A person who shrivels at the thought of mere human and social interactions. A flower that has not yet bloomed and flourished in the light of society. This thought or the one-sided illusion of an introvert leads to the false conception that introverts are pushovers, weak prey, or feeble opponents often the target of bullying due to their inhabited mechanisms and withdrawn personalities. Even though Introverts are looked upon negatively their abilities and characteristics are far from negative. Living in the world of an introvert is like living in the world of a fantasy
Being an introvert should be seen as someone who simply finds pleasure, relaxation, calmness, satisfaction, and tranquility with being by him/herself, a person who feels that loneliness, on the most literal and non harmful level,
There are two distinct personality types: introverts and extroverts. Introverts like to keep their thoughts to themselves and prefer to be alone; however, introverts are not always shy. On the other hand, extroverts are comfortable with sharing their ideas and opening up to others quickly. According to Anthony Hilling in “Extrovert and Introvert—what is the difference?, “It is wrong to think of introverts as being antisocial.” Furthermore, introverts and extroverts choose to socialize differently. Carl Jung defines “introversion as an attitude-type characterised by orientation in life through subjective psychic contents (focus on one's inner psychic activity).” Introverts are known for articulating their thoughts clearly in writing because they “tend to stop, reflect and absorb information before speaking, they reflect this kind of deliberate thought in their writing.” There is an apparent difference between the two personality types, explaining why many people believe that introverts and ex...
