Personal time off (PTO) also referred to as paid time off can be defied as the defined policy in the category of human resource management that gives employees a time off the daily duties at the work station for the vacations and other personal days off but with no payment withdrawal. PTO also covers the sick days off in such a way that the labor law set the PTO in combination of the vacation days and the sick day off. This means that the policy was set to include this two categories of days off without separating the two to be the sick day off and the vacation day off.in addition to this PTO does not accommodate general leaves that are pertained to employee such as medical leaves, business or company duty leaves among other entitled leaves.in …show more content…
These disadvantages are: Since PTO is set in a way that it covers both sick days off and vacation day off, some employees may feel unsatisfied for the period off especially in case where by the time was limited and that there is no more time to meet the demand of their expectation.in this case some employees tend to extend the time soap s to meet their expectations and this may reduce work output also the employees will be expected to make justification for the time spent out of policy. Since PTO is defined as vacation day of despite the inclusion of the sick day off, employees may fail to take the sick days off. The employees in this case may have the mentality that they will lose the time allocated for the vacation in the name of sick days off. They may therefore go on with the duties at work even if they are unwell to save time for vacation day off. This reduces work productivity as well as output power. The PTO bank takes the rates accumulation of only the used vacation day during termination.in cases where the employee has not used the sick days off, the company will have many financial liabilities to make during employees termination. This is because, even though sick days off should not be counted in the rates of interests, but its included in the PTO therefor it is
The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) provides certain employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave and job protection for childbirth, adoption or foster care; to care for a seriously ill child, spouse, or parent; or for an employee’s own serious illness (Cañas & Sondak, 2011). It also requires that their group health benefits remain intact during the unpaid leave of absence. The employee must have worked for the employer for at least a year and must have earned 1,250 hours of service during the previous 12 months ((Cañas & Sondak, 2011, pg. 70).
The balancing act of family and work can be very difficult at times. At some point in everyone’s life, he or she will need to take time off of work to deal with family matters. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 was created to help employees find a balance between the challenging demands of work and home. This Act allows eligible workers that require time off for personal reasons or family emergencies up to twelve weeks of unpaid leave.
In response to the increasing need for employees to balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of families, Congress passed the Family and Medical Leave Act. Without a policy like FMLA in place, many employees often would have had to choose between “the job they need and the family they love” (Hayes). The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 is the first national law created to help Americans balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of the family. It successfully helps bridge the gap between family and work and secures the right for both men and women to get unpaid leave and assistance when dealing with family related circumstances.
... then this is a culture difference between Mr. Higashi and the employee. However, if Kelly had intended on using the vacation for vacation and sick leave for sick leave then that means there is no vacation time allowed for Kelly to use for this vacation. The compromise would be that Mr. Higashi and Kelly would agree to use one day of sick leave and one day of vacation time off. This strategy would allow both parties to win to some degree and at the same time be able to keep an agreeable relationship between the two parties.
This paper will describe the problem that Kelly experienced with her new job with the sick leave policy. We will discuss if Kelly should call CLAIR, or discuss this further with Mr. Higashi? What is this main dispute about for Kelly? For Mr. Higashi? In these types of conflicts is a compromise possible? What are the tangible factors in this situation? What are the intangible factors in the negotiation Is saving face more important to Kelly or Mr. Higashi? Why? Which are more important, the tangible or intangible factors? Is this true for both Kelly and Mr. Higashi?
School is usually a huge part of every child’s daily agenda. Teenagers in high school basically dedicate their entire day to school and homework. Students in grade 8 are similarly going through the same process as high school students. As students work 2 months after the Winter Break, some of them tend to start reducing their quality in their work. When we’re tired of doing school work for two straight months, why should we only receive a short March Break? Can’t the March Break just be one week longer, the same as the Winter Break? Students shouldn’t be limited to the amount of activities they can do during the March Break. Since the March Break is the last Break of the year, students clearly deserve two weeks of March Break rather than one. Furthermore, students should have the need to relax before the next three more months of school.
You get the phone call in the middle of the night. Your son or daughter has been in a serious accident and is hospitalized in critical condition. After several day’s they come home from the hospital with several broken bones and require your around the clock attention for the next eight to twelve weeks. You just got over a serious medical condition yourself which you acquired while on vacation and do not have any vacation time or sick time to take off. Do you have to quit your job? Can your employer terminate you for taking time off to be with your child? What options do you have? What can your employer do for you? Well, the answer lies in the Family and Medical Leave Act.
The Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) was established to provide employees with ability to take a leave from work for personal or family health issues. The Act lays out specific circumstance in which an employee may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave within a 12 month period. Under the law, employees may request a leave for personal health issues, to care for a child, spouse or parent with serious health issues, birth or care of a child during the first year or for newly placed adoptions within one year. Employees are covered under FMLA if the employer has 50 or more employees and the employee has worked for the employer for at least 12 months. The employee must submit a written request for FMLA and provide documentation supporting their request. Once approved, the employee may take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. Upon return the employee is guaranteed a job, if the employer had to fill their position out of business necessity, the employer must provide the employee with a position with equal responsibility and pay.
Paid parental leave should be equal and for both parents once a child is born
Other benefits aligned with paid time off is sick leave awarded in 4 hour increments per pay period with no limit on accruals. Employees may use this time to attend medical appointments for themselves and dependents. The sick leave bank is also used for bereavement (up to 5 days) and funeral (up to 3 days) time off when unfortunate deaths occur.
Paid sick leave is an entitlement for employees within any organisation, it is meant to be used for when an employee is sick or has family obligations, such as caring for sick loved ones. As in the article ‘Anger at plan to cut medic’s sick leave’ unlike annual leave sick leave cannot be accumulated and employees cannot obtain compensation for sick leave not taken (2004). Paid sick leave is necessary for employees as the entitlement gives them the option for when they cannot attend work due to an illness, sick leave also helps the organisation, as employees with sick leave are able to work reliably and efficiently, and by allowing a sick employee off for a single day can prevent the whole organisation from catching the sickness and reducing productivity. However sick leave schemes are open to abuse, it requires strong administration and planning from the organisation’s human resources department as well as the employer. Researching and planning a sick leave policy plan in which benefits both the employee and employer would help reduce the problem of sick leave abuse while keeping the entitlement available. This paper will discuss what sick leave is, why and how it is abused, why it is a problem for organisations and what type of plans can be used to minimise the abuse of sick leave within an organisation.
Jon Olson wrote an article on procrastination because it affects the workers at his fabrication company. He looked into a study from a recent conference of the Psychological Society at a university in Toronto shows “200 Canadian students found that procrastinators put themselves under so much pressure by delaying action that they suffered more stress-related illness than others” (Olson 20-21). Stress from adjourning can cause illness? Definitely not a good sign. Especially because most everyone puts off working. I know if I put off work, it ends up getting done really late at night, then I don’t get enough sleep. This can be one way I make myself more vulnerable to illness. In the same study, supporting the fact that illness occurred more with procrastination, the student’s positive attitudes turned into colds, back pain, headaches, allergies, and sleeping issues (Olson 20-21). These effects are unhealthy, so much so that their lagging could get worse due to their health conditions. If they get little sleep or feel like they are hurting, they will want to sleep to ‘do it tomorrow’ when they are energized or healthy. This will lead to more stress as the deadline for their assignment gets closer, leading to more feelings of

Stacey was next to add something. “You are my best friend in the whole world, and you know I’ve told you many times how much I love you, so I can’t give any reasons what’s wrong with this picture, there just is. I don’t ever want to lose you as my best friend. Nothing more was said. They fell asleep like that. It was a good thing they got up before the rest of the family because they would never have heard the end of it. The United States Congress moved the Memorial Day holiday to the last Monday in May in 1968. It may have been so close to summer vacation it already felt that way, but there was a school day for Stacey and Arlene until just before their graduation days. Ann and Christopher had regular classes, too, and even a normal
