Why I chose Social Work Ask anyone why they decided to major in social work and you will probably receive an excessive amount of the same answers. “I want to help people.”“I love to work with kids.” “I want to make their life better.” All of those are great answers, but it does not cover the entire question. I feel that if it is the end of the day and you were able to bring a smile across someone’s face then you are doing your job right. If someone chooses to come to you for help in their life, then that itself is an overwhelming feeling. I want to make a difference in a life. I want them to say, “Yes, Chelsey was there for me throughout my hard times and she changed my life into what it is today.” I want to leave my own personal imprint of …show more content…
each person that I choose to help, I want them to question why they thought they were going through a rough time in the first place. I want to make them feel safe, and not scared. I hope to be able to answer all of their questions and make everything as clear as possible. I don’t want them to live in fear for the rest of their lives, I want to be their spokesperson when they are too shy to say how they really feel. I want to change their lives for the better and impact them in such a great way. I want to be a social worker. 2. Personal Strengths and Weaknesses Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and they come out at different times.
They can be triggered by the type of situation someone is in. Of course I sometimes make mistakes, I’m only human. I am not some kind of super human that can do everything imaginable, I also have many weaknesses. First I will mention some of my strengths: I am very flexible, I can adapt to change very well as long as I have a set plan of the change I will do my best to exceed the expectations. I am excellent at communication. Sometimes I can tell that something is wrong with one of my peers just by their facial expressions. I do my best to try and get them to talk about their feelings with me and I make sure that they know that I am always here for them if they need a shoulder to cry on, or just to vent out all of their anger. I am very good at showing empathy towards someone, I know that a situation will not change over night and sometimes a person just needs to know that someone else cares about them and will be there for them. I believe that I am very good at cooperating and I can get along with just about anyone, I am open to new ideas only if they help the situation. I understand that not everyone comes from the same background or cultures. I am open to working with people of different race, ethnicity, religion, and so on. “By contrast, persons who value human diversity and respect the dignity of others are more likely to be good candidates for a career in social work” (Suppes & …show more content…
Wells, 2013, p 8). I look forward to experiencing that. Just like anyone else I have many flaws, too. I sometimes get too attached to something if I spend a lot of time with it. I know that it very bad in the field, and it would be something that I needed to work on. Most of the time I am very high-strung and I expect things to be done a certain way, I realize that is not the case if I further my career, I have to be able to accept change right on the spot without warning. I feel as though I am organized, but my organization skill and someone else’s organization skills are different. I prefer a messy area because somehow I know where everything is, but I know if I am juggling four different cases then a messy desk would not be ideal in any setting. I understand that I have many flaws and I am more than willing to overcome these obstacles. Furthermore, I understand that there is a good chance that I will be working with different people everyday. I know that everyone has unique feelings, and I have to be able to work with them and make sure I am not bias against something. I believe through proper training and utter determination that one day I will be able to do all of these things and give out the best care possible. 3. Strengths are Important The strengths that I have will play a very important role when dealing with clients. They will show that I know what I am doing, and that I have all of the training needed to excel at my job. Client care is essential because if I act like I do not care about my clients or the work I am doing then it will show, and clients will not return to me. Overall I would get awful reviews. Having a strength in flexibility is very important, because a number of things can happen to one person and I have to be ready for a fast change. Everything can be going very well in a household, and it would make my job very easy. In a blink of an eye everything about that household could change, it could become abusive. I must be ready to step in and make the change that is needed. Communicating is a pertinent skill to have. I have to be able to talk to my clients and make sure they have a safe environment and feel completely comfortable talking to me. In order to communicate well I have to start critically thinking to arrive at the proper answers or questions. 4. Overcoming my limitations It is extremely important that I do not let my limitations hold me back. I must overcome them and use them to my advantage. The limitations I have are very crucial because they are required for my profession so I have to learn how to make my weaknesses into strengths. I will have to learn not to become too attached to my client. Not because I would give them special treatment, but because it will really damage me emotionally if things do not work out in their favor. I must be able to maintain a healthy relationship with my clients, and I cannot get too personal on my end. It is crucial that I become less high-strung. I have to be more open to someone else’s ideas, not everything can go my way all of the time so I have to be able to cooperate better with others. I have to have a better way of organizing my paperwork. It can get very confusing if someone were to sit at my desk for a day that I was not able to be there. It would be nearly impossible for them to take over my case because they would not know where to begin looking for information. I know that there are many things that I have to work on in order for my clients to receive the best care that they need. I am willing to do whatever I can to make sure that they have the proper environment and feel safe. 5. Certain Feelings Writing this paper made me have a number of feelings.
I was reflecting on why I chose to major in social work, and before writing this paper I do not even know if I was sure why I was doing it. For half of my senior year and all of summer I would constantly get the question, “What are you majoring in?” I would then tell them that I intended to major in social work. I would always receive the same facial expression, like they were embarrassed to be talking to me. I did not understand why, it was my life and my decisions. They would tell me that I should not do that because social workers are bad people and I will never make enough money to support myself and my family. This always angered me, I did not know enough about social work then so I never replied to their nasty words. Now that I have written this paper I cannot wait until someone asks me what I am majoring in. Social work is important. social workers change lives. They do not wake up every morning contemplating how to ruin someone’s life, they contemplate on how to make it better. I feel happier with my decision on my major. I want to tell people that social workers are not bad people. I feel like I know myself more, I have finally revealed my strengths and weaknesses to someone else. I hope that I can receive the help that I need in order to further my education. Writing sections 1-4 made me feel refreshed. It seemed like a big weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I feel clean. Knowing what I know just makes
me more excited to learn more about social work, specifically in health care. I am very thankful that I had to write this paper, I feel a lot better about myself and my intended major.
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
The Masters degree of Social Work (MSW) is a degree that defines who you are and where you are going career-wise. If you are getting a Masters Degree in social work you are most likely going into the field of social work. This deems the question of why I want to go into the specific field of social work. A main reason for me to go into the field of social work is that social work fits my set of values moreso than any other field I am qualified for. Social work is a profession inherently about helping people improve their lives. That kind of work is noble and something I would like to do for the rest of my life. I have always wanted to do things and have a career that would help people and empower their lives. I believe helping people is the only way I can have a clear conscience and sleep well at night. My personal values center around helping people but also about helping people help themselves and improve their own lives. I do not want to treat people who utilize social work services as charity cases or as victims. That is not fair to those people and strips them of their humanity. I hope I can utilize my career as a social work to do as much good as possible in the United States and in the world.
There are many different career fields you can go into as a social worker: from mental health, drug and alcohol abuse all the way to child welfare. Child welfare is my primary target when I become a social worker. I feel that I will have the biggest impact if I help the kids out that will be creating our future world. If I can help the kids of the next generation then maybe my influence will help more than just those few kids I see every day. Plus ever since I can remember people told me I need to be doing a job that helps children. I want to be able to make a difference in the community, and if I can help the kids, then I know I’ll be helping the community. Being a student at Wilmington College will help me fulfill these values and skills, but the thing that
I first became interested in social work when I took a human rights course as a part of my political science major requirements. Throughout the course, I was fascinated and disturbed by the historic oppression of many large groups in society, and I realized my interests lie outside of the political arena; thus, I double-majored in social policy & practice because of my desire to learn more about how to enhance human well-being, fight social injustice, and pursue social change. I soon realized I wanted to pursue graduate social work education in order to gain a more holistic understanding of social problems and human ailments and, in turn, better understand the best ways to fix them. My background in political science and social policy gives me a unique perspective on the field of social work, as I have gained immense knowledge on social issues, the law, and public policy that will be useful in my graduate school and professional endeavors to fight for social
I come to Fordham University with expectations of completing my Masters of Art degree in Social Service. As a single parent, I have faced many challenges raising my special needs child. My innovation to help disadvantaged children with social and emotional problems encompassed me to continue to pursue a career in the Social Service Profession. This will increase my chances of being a successful Child Therapist. I am aware, prepared and committed to devoting my time towards my studies at Fordham University as well as taking advantage of all the necessary resources that Fordham University has to offer. My personal, academic and profession experience has given me the opportunity

Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients
... Release statistics show, 66.2 percent of 2012 high school graduates were enrolled in colleges or universities, but only 54 percent graduate from college. Continuing my education is important to me and will open many doors for me. Obtaining my degree will help me be a better person and also help others be better. A direct-service social worker helps people cope with challenges they are facing in their lives. Clinical social workers are therapists who diagnose and then treat individuals who have mental, behavioral and emotional disorders. With that being said, I will have to have full knowledge and an ample amount of education to help my clients. I will have enough education to help a child that just lost both of their parents, help guide that child, and show them there is someone to help them. Just like Anne Franks stated; “No one has ever become poor by giving.”
I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. I also believe strongly that people are inherently good and capable of doing good. All together, through different day to day experiences and my drive to do good and help facilitate change are just some of the reasons I am applying to a professional degree of social
I chose to pursue a degree in Social Work because I have a deep passion for helping people figure things out and get back on track. I have always tried to help people in the simplest ways without being over intrusive and giving them the respect and dignity they deserve. As a teen I found joy in the slightest things like helping people fill out and submit job applications, filling out medical forms, and explaining to them the process for things such as obtaining Medicaid, food stamps, their food handlers card and even on where and how to apply for your driver’s license. These things may seem trivial but I guarantee that for many people this was a huge help. Working with people is not just something that happens; first you have to want to help people and be patient and understanding with the people who you are helping and that does not happen overnight, second, you must be able to recognize your own limitations and know when to refer someone to qualified professionals.
The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. In these younger years with the assistance of my parents, my love for others allowed me to help other teenagers in crisis, often providing shelter, advice, monetary assistance and a listening
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
My reasoning behind deciding to pursue a career in social work stems from my seemingly innate desire to see others succeed in fulfilling their potential. Although it feels somewhat of a cliché, my passion and desire for the field of social work originates from a genuine wish to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families.
This paper will show the reason why I have chosen to become a social worker in the area of aged care practice. Experience never gets old (The intern, 2015). This quote relates to me. This is because my parents or someone who are older than me, have been through their lives. So they sometimes give us as an life advise, however, we hear that as nit picking as we are young and then we get to understand while we are going through our lives.
