I have been interested in science for as long as I can remember. When I was in pre-school I would watch television shows like "The Magic School Bus" where every episode talked about a new topic such as anatomy or astronomy and the characters within the show learned more about the problems taking place alongside the viewer. While I watched these shows I wanted to be like those kids in The Magic School Bus who got to experience the different events which occurred both in the macro and micro world around them. Unfortunately the technology to shrink down to the size of a red blood cell and learn about the heart and blood flow first hand doesn’t exist yet. I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.

I have always been drawn to serving others. I enjoy listening to the challenges people face and helping them arrive at a healthy conclusion. I take pride in advocating for those who are unable to advocate for themselves and genuinely care for every person who lacks access, or is denied access to services their community provides. However, I never thought of social work as a profession. I always thought psychology was what I needed to study in able to obtain my long-term goals of working in a school setting or becoming a therapist. It was not until my junior year here at Monmouth University, I realized psychology was not the right field for me. As psychology became a more research-based program, I began to examine social work as a major and explore the classes they offered. The Introduction to Social Work class opened up so many more opportunities. I finally understood the content I was learning and was able to apply those learning’s to the kind of work I potentially saw myself doing. In other words, I felt at home in the field of social work, like I had finally found my calling.
I am interested in obtaining my masters degree in the field of social work because I am passionate about issues of equality and fairness, and want to be in a position to help out in this area in a constructive and meaningful way. Social workers have the ability to make direct, beneficial changes in people’s lives, often the people who need it the most. It may rarely be world-changing on a macro level, but social work, when done right, can have world changing effects, for the better, on the people it touches.
Social workers understand how diversity can characterize and mold someone’s experience and how it’s critical to the formation of one’s identity. The elements of diversity are acknowledged as the crossroad of various components which include; age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, political ideology, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. Social workers appreciate that, someone’s life experiences may include ill-treatment, poverty, marginalization, and alienation as well as privilege, power, and acclaim as consequences of differences.

I have always been fascinated with science-oriented interests. I remember being young and intrigued by the complexity of the human body. As I grew, puzzles and critical thinking became essential to my learning process.
I am a average 8th grader who would be honored to attend an early College High School. I would appreciate attending Clear Horizons High School for the reason of extending my learning capability and challenging my thinking. If I were to attend Clear Horizons High School my expectations would be to insure I will be not only going to college but finishing a bachelors degree. My main obstacle as a student is being too nervous to ask questions and speak in front of the class.
In my household, from the time I was in Kindergarten, my mother expected academic excellence and nothing less. With her help I was an A student, Science fair grand champion, Young authors winner, Community helpers member, Young academic role model and more. At the age of eleven I lost my mother to Invasive Breast Cancer. Being academically successful was her goal for me and up to that point in her life she instilled the values of education and hard work ethic into me. At that young age I had to decide how I was going to continue being academically successful in school and what were my educational goals for myself. Since that day every school year I ask myself that same question,and this year being my senior year it’s more prominent than ever. My short term educational goals are: to apply and be admitted to 4 universities, maintain a 3.7 gpa, pass AP calc and English exam’s with a score of 4 or higher, and graduate with honors.
Growing up in Dayton, the son of a blue collar factory worker, I was repeatedly told that I was going to college so that I could get a job I looked forward to going to every morning. College was not about money, or climbing the social ladder, but about purpose.
The cultivation of my life experiences can be best summed up as the simultaneous engagement in praxis in three spheres: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and the organizational. The eight plus past years have been a transformative time in which I developed myself into a confident and purpose driven leader, maximizing every opportunity for growth in my respective communities. Through my narrative, I will outline the journey I have taken from my entrance into high school to my completion of formal education at the University of Colorado Boulder. Something special in my life is that I’ve always been around little kids, most of my cousins have kids and my family doesn’t really have teenagers it’s only me and sister and the rest are younger. So my whole live I’ve been surrounded by younger kids and I have experience, and I’m really good with children. I like teaching them something new me and my sister taught my little brother and niece how to multiply before they learned in school and that was fun and happy seeing them learn something. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher since I was little it was always on my mind and till this day I still would like to become a teacher for elementary schools.
