Personal Statement (Rough Draft) All my life, I had been told to try my hardest and to push through any obstacle that came my way. Whether it be a personal issue or a simple quiz, I would always manage to triumph. The burden of struggle has always been in my family. Before I was even born, my family was suffering a terrible crisis in their homeland: Afghanistan. The war had just begun and terrorist extremist groups were bombing their city of Kabul. They had no choice but to flee the country. Not knowing where to go, my great uncle Mohammad Darab, who was a pilot training in the United States at the time, guided my mother, father, grandmother, and aunt to America. Unfortunately, only one of my two aunts survived the bombing. After struggling for 30 years, my mother and father had worked through their struggle and managed to start a beautiful family. Being the youngest of three, I was the last to realize how strong my family was to be able to overcome their difficult times. …show more content…

Coming to America and not knowing a single word of English put them at a disadvantage, both financially and socially, making it extremely difficult for them to create a stable income for their children. We lived in a neighborhood that had monthly payments in which my parents had to work arduously for, while simultaneously trying to use the remnants of what they had earned to feed us. For about twenty years my parents had to give up their luxuries in order to make a living for us.
