Personal Statement: My Experience Volunteering

I started working with children, adolescents, and their family when I was fourteen-years-old. My first experience volunteering was teaching basic daily skills to toddlers and young children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I can say with confidence that that was a time where my passion and to better the lives of children and their families became a noteworthy interest of mine. When working with children who are diagnosed with ASD, as well as other neurodevelopmental disorders, it requires patience and genuine warmth to connect on a level that would benefit the children. This was an existential experience that brought joy to children’s lives while receiving chemotherapy, as well as gave the parents some free time. Even though this experience greatly benefits the children fighting cancer, their sibling and parents, I can safely say that the children I met at Sunrise Day Camp and Long Island Jewish Cohens Children’s Hospital inspired me and continue to be my role models. In addition, through my experience volunteering for three years with Sunrise Association, I realized that I am benevolent and sensitive toward children and adolescents who are given a life that they do not deserve. I know that the characteristics I possess have confirmed that I am capable of fulfilling my dream and goals in the future. I accepted an offer from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University with a Dean’s Scholarship into their Psy.D program. Throughout my first year in graduate school, the classes that contributed to my growth in the field are clinical interviewing, child psychopathology, adult psychopathology courses, interventions, and lifespan development. During my first year I was enrolled assessment classes where I was trained in multiple cognitive and personality assessments. These courses introduced me to the major approaches and techniques for intellectual assessments and objective personality testing.
