Personal Statement: How To Help People In Poverty

When people drive down the road and see someone sitting on the sidewalk asking for money, a lot of times they don't give the person anything. The people usually think the reason they are poor is because they spend all their money on drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes. In some cases, that is true, but there are other times where these people in poverty are actually working hard to make money. Sometimes, they have kids that they need to feed too, but if people aren't being kind, the people in poverty won't have any money to buy food for their family. After seeing how people in poverty were treated, I knew I wanted to do something to help. When people don't think to donate old clothes or money to people in poverty, I help by volunteering at a center …show more content…

I was beyond excited. Whatever I ended up doing there, I knew in some way it would help the people in poverty. We pulled up to the building, and all hopped out of the bus. Following the teacher, we all entered through the glass double doors. As we entered, we were greeted by someone who worked there. Not sure what we were going to do, we left all the power in her hands to show us where to go. She took us into a room where she talked about the organization itself. She told us what they did to help people in poverty, and why they wanted to help. She also informed us that out of everyone who works there, only three people get paid, and the rest were volunteers. That showed me that there are still a lot of people who care enough to try and make a difference in the world, and that made me feel happy. I wished everyone cared that much, but at least this is a start. After her talk, she split us up into different groups to go help with something. We then all split up and were taken to somewhere different to help out. I was taken, along with a couple other people to go clean the toddler room. This room was meant for little kids while their parents were taking classes about parenting. The lady directed us and told us what to do, and then we got started.
