Hi vtgentleman2013,
As you’ve probably noticed, I have a very dry sense of humor and yesterday it was extra dry for some mysterious reason ;-)
I enjoyed your profile, particularly where you wrote that you are a protector of the weak, vulnerable and exploited. I have spent my life doing the same. My background is in psychology, and most of my career has been in working with the homeless (mainly women) teaching life skills and career development. I worked for 10 years at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter helping the residents there to realize their value and potential through self-esteem building and changing the old belief systems that were keeping them stuck. I never left the shelter after one of my classes not feeling extremely uplifted
One subject that simply can not be ignored no matter where you find yourself in Anaheim. The homeless population in Anaheim is rapidly growing and there seems to be no end to this conundrum. Sadly, these poor individuals can be found anywhere some small amount of shelter is. Thus, you can constantly find them lingering around parks or on the sides of freeways waiting to beg the next passerby for enough money to make it through the day. In Anaheim they can usually found at the various parks we have around the city. The heart of a person is only so delicate to feel remorse or sadness whilst the less fortunate of society wanders within their eyes. But surprisingly enough when the time comes down to it you often hear the phrase,
I value words as more than mechanisms of communication, but as depictions of one’s character. The words: determination, caring, compassion, goal oriented, and resilience accurately depict my character. I am very kind hearted and caring individual who will go out of my way to help people in need with no expectations of reciprocation. I keep at a problem until it’s solved and do what is necessary to complete all tasks. My knowledge and skill set as a Pediatric Registered Nurse can contribute to Junior League’s focus on children’s welfare and education. Unfortunately at my work, I come across too many incidents of children requiring foster care due to inadequate parenting. I see a huge need for organizations, like Junior League, to raise awareness and funding for these children to give them a life they
The homeless population is growing in America. There are more and more Americans living in boxes, sleeping on park benches and panhandling on the streets each day. These people tend to make us, the non-homeless, feel uncomfortable and unsafe. They are also placing increasing stress on the nation's economy. In short, the homeless are a burden on the rest of society. There needs to be action taken against them. "I shall now humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection (Swift.)" I propose that all of the homeless be relocated to foreign third world countries. They can then be hired in American factories producing shoes, automobiles and other various goods at less than one dollar per hour.
California currently faces the ominous blessing of the El Nino weather system, which promises to bring desperately needed rains in the form of storms and torrential rains. In preparation for these rains, California also has to address the homeless population, who will be stranded in the rains if adequate shelters are not provided for them. In his article, Sunnyvale: Fast-tracked Emergency Homeless Shelter Set To Open, Eric Kurhi cites expert opinions, utilizes emotional appeal, and employs rhetorical devices such as diction in order to provide information on the new homeless shelter opening in Sunnyvale while discussing the overall problem of homelessness.
When I think of homeless people, I give into the stereotype of these individuals as being lazy, having mental issues and usually holding up boxboard signs begging for money. Although these traits might be true, it’s easy to say “why not just get a job”, but there are so many different factors that contribute to this issue. Facing problems with transportation, having clean clothes for that workday, mental and physical health and many more attributions. This problem is important in today’s society because instead of giving the homeless a temporary fix such as giving them money or food, help them find a good homeless shelter or affordable housing. Teach them about budgeting which can go along with finding a career path so they can get out of the system.
Couple of days ago I saw a homeless people that seemed to be ranging from all ages. Homeless people I thought were mostly people who had lost their job as a result couldn’t pay for their living conditions such as a house and or apartment. After looking at this teenage boy has made me wonder what caused each homeless person that they have to ask for money. As I grew up, I got a better understanding of why these people were hand paddling for a living. I learned that most of these people had lost their jobs and or had bad money managing skills. Homeless people are everywhere around the world no matter the country and state. Near a gas station in Seattle I noticed a teenager who looked as if he was a senior in high school. He looked as if he was only the streets for a couple of day to a maximum of two weeks. Most homeless people I see are mostly lived like that for weeks and month. Also have that certain smell I can never forget.
While volunteering there, I was placed in a local long-term care home for the elderly. This experience was highly beneficial. Working along side, nurses, care aids and other health care professionals was my first view inside the “system”. Volunteering at the Care Home, did not necessarily make up my mind on the field of social work but solidified my desire to work in the field of human services. I learnt from this experience at the hospital how profound my compassion for others truly was. It was not until my first year of college, that I started to volunteer with an organization that I am still with today and absolutely adore volunteering with. That organization is the Vernon Women’s Transition House in Vernon BC. I started off by filling in for employees who met in weekly meetings. While on the floor, I met many women who were in a place of ‘in-between’ and safety. This experience was eye opening. After a brief stay out-of-town, I returned to Vernon and again volunteered with the transition house – this time in another program: Support to Young Parents. This is an incredible housing program where young mothers who have fled abuse (potentially without the resources or parenting skills they truly need) can live long term. This apartment consists of 6 units, with the 7th unit converted into a resource and common space. The program
Volunteering made me find my career plan in sociology / Social Worker. With a college degree in one of these areas, I hope to impact my community in ways. First, with the knowledge from college, I hope to counsel with young people& adults. In today's society, there are so many negative things that influence adults & young people. I want to help them understand the importance of setting goals and striving to become great citizens. I also want to give them a sense of hope that with perseverance, they can become great role models for other adults &young people by
Imagine eating Christmas dinner underneath a bridge on the cold dirt because you and your family were evicted from your home. Just trying to find a single meal is what thousands of people, who live on the street, go through each day. They have been kicked out of their houses and apartments because they can't afford rent due to their low paying jobs.
The population of Los Angeles continues to grow each day because people perceive that the opportunities will improve their economic and social well-being. Most of them get good jobs manufacturing, business and the government giving them the ability to provide for themselves and their children. Those who are not lucky enough do not realise their goals and depend on the government and the society for basic needs. The effort of the city and the government to house the homeless cannot take the pressure of the rising number of the homeless without the support of the society. Los Angeles in the United State’s largest urban and has the highest number of homeless people making the task of housing its population next to impossible without participation
My name is Mylette Charles I currently work at PATH ( People Assisting the Homeless) located in Los Angeles, California. The goal of this agency is to end homelessness for the community. We provide job assistance, counseling, substance abuse treatment and other services such as providing temporary and permanent housing for those in need. I have a masters in social work and have been licensed for the past 5 years. My client, Chloe age 22 was referred to me by herself. She is looking to get her life together and get help. Assessment is using the tools social workers learned to evaluate the needs of a client. I chose to do the assessment with Chloe because my job is to figure out peoples problems and do my past to help them solve it and be an
My interest persisted and grew as I began to see how my efforts had the ability to improve the lives of people around me. I first noticed this on a personal level as friends would come to me for advice or for me to listen to their struggles and provide comfort. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or common the story was, I listened to them in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. I truly enjoyed hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. These moments helped me realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it increased my interest of pursuing a career where I can support those who need it most. I want to become a social worker so I can provide direction to those who may not be able to get it from other sources, just like I have done for various people throughout my life.
My plan after college is to become a Sociologist or a Social Worker. With a college degree in one of these areas, I hope to impact my community in various ways. First, with the knowledge obtained from college, I hope to counsel with young people who are on the verge of going astray. In today's society, there are so many negative factors that influence young people. I want to help them understand the importance of setting goals and striving to become productive citizens. I also want to give them a sense of hope that with perseverance, they can become great role models for other young people.
Homelessness is everywhere, it is not a new trend and is a growing problem. Many people ask themselves should I help the homeless or not; it is easier to just ignore the problem than to give a helping hand. Every person needs help at one point or another in their life and homeless people should be no different. Assisting the homeless with healthcare, housing, and childcare are ways people are able to and should help the homeless.
Homeless is a provisional condition that individuals fall into when they can't stand to pay for a spot to live, or when their present home is dangerous or unsteady. Different variables, for example, work misfortune, physical and mental disability, different hardships including individual, and substance abuse can pussed people's slide into destitution, and for some, inevitable homeless, particularly without legitimate social administrations. The absence of lodging, access to social insurance, and strong administrations, then go about as others hindrances that keep people from moving into homefullnesss.
