Who? Greetings, I’m Josh Matla, teacher at Atlantic Ocean High School. I currently teach Marine Science for 22 of the brightest and best 11th graders our school has to offer. I’ve been teaching at the school for 2 years following the completion of my master’s degree in education from Florida State University. I love teaching and my favorite part is actually making an impact on a student’s life by helping them grow, learn, and develop as a person in and outside of the classroom. I feel I can do this while also making learning fun, preparing students for the future, and improving their retention rate.

I became a teacher to make an impact on people’s lives. There’s no doubt I can do this without technology in the classroom. However, with technology in the classroom I can make a bigger and more meaningful impact on students lives by making learning fun, preparing students for the future, and improving their retention rate. Making learning fun for students is critical because students are more likely to and willing to learn the material. Technology in the classroom, like ipads, can make information that seems challenging or boring interesting with virtual lessons, videos, or games on a table. Using technology in the classroom will also prepare students for the future. CompTIA’s study showed that 9 out of 10 students indicated that using technology in the classroom would help prepare them for the digital future. These 21st-century skills are essential in order to be successful in this day and age. Education isn’t just about memorizing facts and vocabulary words, it’s about solving complex problems and being to collaborate with others in the workforce. I am an African American female who attends the University of Chicago Charter School, which is located on the South side of Chicago. I am seventeen years old and I live and attend school in a predominantly Black neighborhood. I have seen plenty in my seventeen years of living. My goal is to go to college and become a teacher, so that I can return to Chicago and help the people in my community. In six years, I will be giving back to the community and helping the world become better place. I will help teach kids not to live in stereotypes and let them bring them down.

The Wise Old Woman and Mrs. Flowers settings are one thing to contrast. The Wise Old Woman has a setting in Feudal Japan from 1185-1600. They lived in the olden days so that means they had different religions, beliefs and technology. It is very hard not to realize that technology has overpowered education in many ways. “Technology integration is similar to a tidal wave, growing silently in strength, then falling with an unstoppable roar upon those who paid no attention or showed little interest” (Guhlin, 40). Nowadays, computers are almost considered a necessity in the classroom, and are the main component of technology integration. Computers are being used in more numerous ways, besides only being used for basic word processing. With a simple computer, copious availabilities of technologies can be used in the classroom. “The one thing that is so great about the computer is that it does give a lot of instruction--and you don't need to have hearing to take advantage of it” (Anderson, 12). It’s amazing how one simple screen can provide everlasting opportunity for learning.

I have always been grateful to my mom (who is a retired teacher) for implanting values in me. I feel I should contribute what I have learned and experienced over the years. Technology can help students become more involved in their own learning process, which is not seen in the traditional classroom. It allows them to master basic skills at their own rate rather than being left behind. Teachers and students alike can connect to real life situations by using technology in the classroom; this can also help to prepare students for real world situations. Technology can be used to motivate students as well as to offer more challenging opportunities. It can also be used as a visualization tool to keep students interested in the subject that is being taught. When technology is used effectively, students have the opportunity to develop skills that they may not get without the use of technology (Cleaver, 2011). Assessing and monitoring students is easier on the teacher because of the ability to use technology in the classroom. When technology is used correctly it offers limitless resources to a classroom atmosphere.
