Humanity presents individuals with extraordinary gifts as well as weaknesses. Growing up I realized this notion as I gave insulin shots to my younger brother and reminded him to check his blood consistently throughout the day. I was determined to fight this battle with him through researching alternative medicine options and attending his doctor’s appointments. This life experience enlightened me on my compassion for individuals with health issues and my passion for management and prevention of chronic diseases. Despite the activity or task, I have always enjoyed and been drawn to leadership roles. I was a teaching assistant for two different kinesiology courses at UMass Amherst, where I assisted the professor in running discussions, creating and teaching lesson plans, grading tests, running office hours, and leading groups of students in a semester long project. My favorite aspect of this role was getting to know each individual in my discussion group and creatively communicating ideas and concepts according to their individual learning needs. Currently, I am a Practice Quality Support Coordinator and one of my roles is assisting practices in locating and outreaching to patients that need preventative services performed, such as a mammogram, colonoscopy, or follow up for patients with high blood pressure. By ensuring patients acquire these services, we can detect health conditions earlier, prevent trips to the emergency room, save money, and most importantly save lives. I am passionate about focusing on preventative care and encouraging a healthy lifestyle to each one of my patients. I have personally seen the power of exercise and a healthy diet in my brother’s life. Playing football and other forms of exercise has stabilized his blood sugars and led to a reduction in the amount of insulin he needs. I want to be involved in the education for newly diagnosed patients, as well as the management of their disease in everyday life. I would like to become a Family Nurse Practitioner to help reach my goal of working in an emergency clinic. Specializing in family medicine will allow me to provide primary, preventative, and urgent care to patients ranging from newborns to the elderly.
