My interest in the field of Public Health, particularly in Epidemiology is deeply personal. Growing up in a large family, looking after aging grandparents I have experienced first hand the effectiveness of public health policies in managing preventable diseases and the ways in which these policies advocate for geriatric patients like my grandparents. Moreover, the benefits I have witnessed from healthcare policy have led me to want to do the same for others in my community. Going forward, I remember my background and give back to the best of my ability, with the same compassion that was afforded to my grandparents.

By working with medical professionals and patients, I became familiar with treatment regimens, pharmaceutics, and the application of practical changes that could maintain even reverse many debilitating diseases. One of my duties was to advocate for patients detailing accurate descriptions of medications and treatment protocol, interpreting their application to patients. This also greatly supported my interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment. Indeed, my peers recognized me for the Youth Leadership Award and the Ventura County Council presented me with the Volunteer Excellence Award, a privilege and honor I take pride in.
At UCSB, I am heavily involved in similar non-profit philanthropy like Doctors Without Walls, cultivating my passion for assisting others, by organizing a weekly clinic for homeless women. Throughout my time serving the underprivileged, I have seen first hand the perpetual cycle of ineffective or absent public healthcare policy, policies that tend to discount the struggles of impoverished populations, and people dealing with the constraints of many avoidable and treatable conditions, consolidated by a paucity of access to education, preventative health services, and quality …show more content…

An ability that will help me greatly in my graduate studies, emanating from experience in good time management and organizational skills. Having been involved in diverse volunteering endeavors I have enhanced my cultural competency and self-efficacy. More importantly, my life experiences, taking care of my ailing grandparents and those of low socio-economic backgrounds, have instilled in me a heartfelt compassion for victims of circumstance, and an urgent need to facilitate their growth, empowering them with the tools to lead healthier lives.
Pursuing a Masters of Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology at San Diego State University will better prepare me to assess and remove the various risk factors threatening the underserved community by working alongside prestigious professors.
