I’ve grown up in a household of primary care physicians. I often overheard stories of helping patients and changing their lives; I didn’t understand too much how a physician could change a life, until I had that experience. As a child, I was very self conscious about my teeth. I refused to smile because my teeth were “ugly”. My dentist informed me that my cuspids were growing in sideways, and I needed a corrective operation or I would lose all top teeth. I was terrified, but my oral surgeon assured me it would be okay. He was right: He gave me just what I needed to smile and not worry. It’s crazy how such a simple thing, like teeth, can change a person’s confidence. Since that day, I’ve wanted to become an oral surgeon. I wish to give other people the confidence that my oral surgeon gave me. Before my experience, however, I’d always known I wanted to work in the medical field. My favorite, and best, courses in school had always been math and …show more content…
Many would say that I am quite mature for my age. That maturity has allowed me to grow friendships with pupils who are older than I. For example, I currently service for a freshman english teacher at my high school. Every day I ask her how her day is or how her weekend was and we are able to carry on a small conversation about it before or after class. We do not have a friendship persay, but that is more of a relationship than most students are willing or able to have with their teachers. However, I also am a very fun person. My ability to go out of my comfort zone and have fun connects me to those who are younger. One of my best friendships and relationships is with my four year old niece. I can strike a conversation with just about anyone I meet. I do not have to force that connection, but rather it comes natural to me and I believe that this quality is very important in a primary care physician because I will be caring for individuals of all
Today must've been the busiest day I've ever experienced at this office. There were so many patients. They all waited at least 3 hours just to be seen by the doctor. The good thing is the office closed at noon so everyone usually was able to make it their shift at work. I got a lot of experience assisting in extractions. I worked with the same doctor I usually work with. She's very nice to me and always requests me when I come in to assist. I interacted with the hygienist, dental assistants (which were just pre-dental volunteers), and the front desk assistant. Everyone had such a good spirit today. There is a dentist that often acts as a dental assistant, which makes things easier because she teaches us about how to prep for procedures and
Milder had terminal cancer. I was immediately distraught, wondering how Dr. Milder could operate his practice despite knowing his diagnosis. I gradually realized that it was Dr. Milder's commitment to the practice of dentistry that empowered him to serve others in the face of overwhelming personal adversity. Inspired by Dr. Milder’s optimism and persistence, I started participating in the San Diego County Dental Society initiatives he introduced me to, where I discovered how dentists came together to treat homeless veterans, raise funds for educational programs, and deliver oral hygiene supplies to underserved neighborhoods. I now aspire to follow in these proactive dentists’ footsteps and extend my reach beyond private practice by caring for individuals without adequate resources, promoting public knowledge of oral health, and mentoring future dentists. Although Dr. Milder will not watch my career develop, furthering his chain of compassion as a leader in the dental community will honor his legacy and produce a lifetime of fulfillment and
Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved going to the dentist. I was never scared, not even when I went for my fillings and wisdom teeth extractions. Mostly all the hygienist I have had so far have been friendly, patient and always ready to help with a big smile on their face and that is what attracted me towards this career. I want to help people in need that cannot afford the services.
After being lost, puzzled, and indecisive for a while now about which health-related career I desire the most, I finally made up my mind and selected a major. I decided to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science after accomplishing an Associate’s Degree in Science, which is an open field filled with opportunities for several health professions. I realized that a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science is the way to go as it enables me to switch back and forth between all of the health occupations that I worship. Down the road, I can even further my education and specialize in a specific domain that I am willing to commit to. In general, Health Science is a major where professionals undergo several tasks such as improving their community’s health and overall wellbeing, get involved in nutrition related conditions, use epidemiological techniques, counteract various infections, and enrich physical and daily health routines.
I was able to experience some pretty amazing things that caught my attention before knowing I wanted to become a dental assistant. I never truly understood what all is involved in the dental world until I found myself in it and learned the importance of it! It takes great patience and understanding! But at what point did I really realize I wanted to do it? What got me hooked?
A few weeks ago when I went to the dentist I asked my hygienist a bunch of questions while she was working on my teeth. She was telling me how she has always had a passion for teeth and she would never trade her job for any other. She started off as a dental assistant and decided to go back to school to become a dental hygienist. I asked her what her favorite parts of the job were, she said she has great benefits and that my dentist pays her as much as a doctor would make. Some of her favorite parts of working in a dental office is that she has close relationships with her coworkers because of the size of the facility. She likes working as a hygienist better than an assistant because she is pretty much her own boss and can do things the way she prefers to do them.
Through the activities I have participated in, I have seen the power that communication and strong bonds can have on others. As a hospice volunteer, I realized that one of the most important things a patient approaching end of life wants, is a companion who is willing to both listen and converse with them. In this role, I established close ties with my patients and supported them through a difficult time. I truly believe that the skills I learned as a hospice volunteer also applies to dentistry. While exploring dentistry, I have seen the impact dentists can have on their patients, just through the way they communicate with them. I witnessed an instance when a woman was so deeply afraid of a procedure; however, her dentist, Dr. Chen, demonstrated empathy. Using her words, she earned the patient’s trust and addressed her concerns. By being understanding, Dr. Chen effectively communicated with and calmed the patient. I aspire to become a dentist, like the ones I have shadowed, who value and demonstrate care and patience while treating their
Dentistry is a fascinating profession for its approach to patients, restoring function as well as es-thetic. I believe that Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the most important specialty in dentistry and medicine which combines art with science. It is appealing when patients leave the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) clinics not only with good function and esthetic, but also in a better psychological status. And I find the AAOMS’s motto “Saving Faces.. Changing Lives..” very insi...
When I became a dental assistant, I was able to have the opportunity to truly develop relationships with my patients. One of the most rewarding feelings is being part of a child 's first dental experience because it gives me the ability to influence their attitude towards the dentist. Ever since I can remember, I loved going to the dentist. For that reason, I want my patients to share the same joy as I did. I saw that joy during one of the most memorable times of my collegiate career when I traveled abroad with Global Brigades to
My future career will be working in a Dental office as a dental hygienist primary focused toward children’s orthodontal care. Working conditions can differ depending on where you want to work and what feels right for you. Working in this profession you have so many opportunities as far as job location, being part time or full time and enjoying extra time with your family. (Gibbons et al., 2001) These are all important traits to me and its what really turned me onto this occupation. The following physical requirements are essential when embarking on a career in Dental Hygiene in accordance with the Department of Labor Statics: not only finger dexterity and vison but comprehension of tasks and pronunciation of words. Although I have great goals to help people, my grand wish cannot be granted without a great amount of effort on my part. I decided to take part in activities that would help me reach my goals and to ready myself for that field of work. My extracurricular activities and my electives showed proof of my interest in the medical field over time. I made an extra effort to look for activities and classes that could help me on the way to becoming a doctor. My first step was
In order to determine whether or not clinical medicine was the right career for me, I started shadowing Dr. Richard Turner in the ER. Through my experiences with him, I learned that medicine is a problem solving process. As I watched, he would take a patient's history and try to piece together the correct diagnosis by deciding which scenarios were more likely than others. I was attracted by the dynamic nature of each patient's diagnosis and the necessity for an open mind. My hobby of flying has taught me to look at everything in life with a new perspective and to assess the situation from as many angles as possible. Watching Dr. Turner has confirmed my perception of a medical career and the nature of the work involved. Since I love puzzles and problems, the problem solving aspect also increased my desire to become a physician.
Starting the ninth grade with a mouth full of brackets was not at all how I envisioned starting my high school career. However, two and a half years of embarrassing school pictures, agonizing pain, and a lisp, the final product made it all worth it. The day I completed my orthodontic treatment made me realize why people choose to pursue dentistry. The instantaneous boost in self-confidence that I found from a glowing, electric smile was what sparked my
The sensation that I get when I get to help people is one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced. It’s like having an unlimited amount of bliss to warm your heart because you know that you have helped someone smile or have a better day. I think my career choice has been greatly affected by my parents’ line of work and how they were able to balance their life well. It seemed like they had so much time in their hands even though they were working do hard to provide for our family. The amount of effort they put into their education and their work seems really worth it in the end. I personally think that the journey to becoming a dentist is a long and challenging road and that leads to different paths in dentistry. According to Dr. Chaviano,
My interest in Dentistry began when I visited the Charles Clifford Dentistry School at Sheffield University; using apparatus provided in the university gave me an insight into the processes a dentist would carry out. I particularly enjoyed the experience due to the practicality of it, as it is a very hands-on job. Completing Sheffield University’s “Discovering Dentistry” course has reaffirmed that Dentistry is a career in which I will flourish and I am looking forward to beginning my work placement in a dental clinic in the coming months. Reading about the “father of modern dentistry” Pierre Fauchard and his advancement in dental prosthetics and his study into the anatomy of teeth has really captured my imagination. I was especially drawn into how he created dental equipment such as dental forceps that are still being used in the present day with very minimal changes.
