Personal Reflective Essay: Propranolol

My interest is Pharmacology has grown considerably since I read and researched the work of James.W.Black and his discovery of the drug named ‘Propranolol’. I learned that the drug is still a major part of medicine today especially in cardiovascular diseases e.g. hypertension and protecting the heart further in those who have angina or have had a heart attack previously. From learning about this, I realised that discovering one drug can have a major impact on the world of medicine.

During my AS Chemistry course, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the ‘Instrumental Analysis’ topic and using mass spectra and IR spectra to identify chemical structure. I found ‘Stereoisomers’ in Organic Chemistry very fascinating as one aspect we learnt about …show more content…

One example is my ability to analyse and interpret data and put it into an appropriate form e.g. tables, graphs etc. My organisational skills greatly increased during this time as I had to put the specimens into the filing cabinets in the Herbarium, in order of year collected and also by vice county in which they were found. My communication skills also improved as another pupil on work experience and I had to work together in order to find the specimens, put them in order and then record the information on the databases, which also meant transferring a piece of data from one spreadsheet to the next as it had missing/wrong information on there and needed to be updated. My Welsh Baccalaureate project has also helped me enhance my communication skills both verbally and written. I have presented a number of presentations which helped me understand how to engage the audience and how to speak clearly and confidently. I have written evaluations on each stage of my project, from this I was able to write concisely without missing important information out.
