Every country, state, city, even families have their own set of values. Culture is defined as a cluster of ideas, beliefs, characteristics, and behaviors shared by a group in society. When people talk about their identity and how it was formed, they tend to talk about what influenced them, what values came into it, how their experiences, negative or positive came to shape themselves. Since everyone is different people who counsel, treat, or work with helping other must be understanding and receptive of the individual’s identity and beliefs. When I reflect on what influenced my identity development a few different aspects come to mind. My gender, having a military parent, our type of society and being a middle-class family is the biggest influences that come to mind. In the current society …show more content…

From the example set by my father and the USAF I developed the core values of integrity, hard work, and respect. Living on military base with other members of the military you see how everyone follows the same or similar values as everyone else and adapt those same values. Even though my father has long since retired and we have lived off base I still follow those values, as they have been engraved into my identity, they are now who I am. Living in an individualistic society taught me self-sufficiency, the want and need for independence. Personal responsibility was learned from both individualistic and military backgrounds. Ever since I can remember schools and teachers have been the biggest influence in teaching kids, including myself, how to be self-sufficient with little to no help from others. They taught how to spell check yourself, how to do your own work and how to show it. Many experiences like this one can shape and change our identity, even those of oppression and
