In the words of the late Virginia Henderson: “nurses help people, sick or well, to do those things needed for health or a peaceful death that people would do on their own if they had the strength, will, or knowledge.” Truer words were never spoken-- my personal nursing philosophy is much like Henderson’s in that I believe nurses do not simply follow physician’s orders, but utilize their knowledge, skills, and ability to think critically in order to help patients achieve a better quality of life. A nurse is no longer categorized as the submissive doer of the physician and higher ups in position. Today, a nurse is a powerful, respectable force and source of knowledge, protection, advocacy, promotion, skill, and dedication. They take the necessary …show more content…
measures to prevent illness and injury, alleviate suffering, and provide support to not just the patient, but all components of the patient: family, friends, loved ones, and his community. Nursing is an integrate part of Family Centered Care. It is with a holistic approach to health that today’s nurse fulfills the many responsibilities that they accountable for. In order to be in a state of “good health,” a person must achieve a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.
A nurse is able to achieve this great balance, with the patient and self, by being conscious of the environment that surrounds them and through self awareness. For example, in the scene of an emergency, first and foremost, a nurse must check the environment before started emergent care. Both the patient and nurse must be safe for treatment to be effective. The environment is what surrounds us; our workplace, home, communities, issues we think about, the people we interact with, and the emotions associated with these interactions. The nurse knows that all of these components play an integral role in maintaining stability in a person’s life and health. The nurse assumes care of not just a disease process but of a human being as a whole; a family, a livelihood, a spirit, a person. A nurse knows that in order for holistic care to be effective, the care taker themselves should be at a point of stability as well. A true nurse knows that in order to excel you must know your limits and understand that while your main goal is to help the patient regain their strength, identity, and independence, that goal does not have to be achieved by compromising your own self, identity, and
independence. Being a nurse today allows for one to be a leader, a follower, a student, a teacher, a voice, the true embodiment of patient care and the health care field.
These four concepts play a very important role throughout the care in every single patient we are in contact with. The concept of person is used to represent each individual patient, such as a man or a woman (Chitty & Black, 2014). In the nursing profession, we know that every person is different in their own way from many different factors such as, genetics and environment. As a nurse, we incorporate the different factors that make a person who they are today. According to Chitty & Black (2014), the concept of environment includes all the influences or factors that impact the individual. The environment plays an important role in either promoting or interfering with the patient’s health. The environment can consist of many different systems, such as family, cultural, social and community systems. All these different systems can play a role in the patient’s health. The third major concept of the metaparadigm is health. The concept of health varies from person to person and day-to-day with many different factors included (Chitty & Black, 2014). Health includes every part that makes a person whole, which includes being able to perform their everyday tasks in life effectively. The last concept of the metaparadigm is nursing. Nursing, being the final concept includes all the previous concepts of person, environment and health to create a holistic approach (Chitty & Black, 2014). The holistic approach promotes the well-being of the mind, body and spirit in our
Throughout the history of nursing, many philosophies and theories have emerged in regards to how we as nurses should carry out our profession. I believe that nursing is a highly respected profession than I am honored to be a part of. My personal philosophy on nursing is to treat and care for each patient in the best way that I can. While my philosophy can be considered very broad, I believe that each patient deserves their own specific approach and not necessarily be generalized with one way of thinking.
Other than caring, a nurse’s philosophy should involve the need to be patient, kind, and respectful of others. They need to be able
One thing that is assumed when discussing about nursing is their caring ability. It is taken for granted and it is true that when patients needs comfort they rely first on their family and to their nurses. In some cases there are also possibilities where the patient rely more towards the nurse than the family member. I believe the way nurses are thought about health and doctors are thought are not the same. Most of the time the nurse focuses on the healing part of medicine while doctors focus on the curing. In fact, healing is not a simple process, it is a holistic one. It composes of spiritual, physical, and mental. Once a patient is admitted to a hospital, they are
This paper is a first attempt at forming and articulating my own philosophy of nursing.
My philosophy is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. The practice of nursing not only involves applying knowledge but the ability to differentiate the needs of the client and being empathetic to their needs. Hence, the importance of holistic nursing and not only being for the client but for the clients family as well. Holistic nursing is defined as “all nursin...
The greatest aspect about nursing is that it is never going to be just a job and is even more than a merely profession. Instead, it is a belief system or way of life and not a discipline that can simply be practiced then abandoned to the dictates of a time clock. To simply say that “I love people” or want to “help people get better” does not demonstrate the drive behind this feeling. Articulating my philosophy is not an easy task, to better explain my philosophy of nursing, I am going to use some values that I have learned. These tools truly explain how I feel and what has motivated me to pursue nursing as a career.
Why do we have nursing theories? Well, in the early part of nursing’s history, knowledge was limited. Nursing theories provide a structure for communication between nurses and other health care team. It assist in the discipline of nursing to determines beliefs, values, and goals, and help to contribute to the care of the clients. Because the world of health care is evolving on a daily basis, the field of nursing needs to continue to expand its knowledge. In doing so, the nurses will be able to meet the various needs of their patients. Nurses should continue to work towards protection of their responsibility of caring for patients. Nurses play a vital role in their patients life and performing caring behaviors to help the healing process. This theory focuses on caring about the whole patient and understanding the power of a therapeutic relationship. This theory also introduces ten carative factors which help guide nurses towards caring behaviors. Jean Watson’s theory of caring provide a insight in achieving this goal.
I believe that nursing should be a holistic approach, dealing with a patient’s body, mind, and soul. It is definitely a physically demanding job, but equally as important is the demand for emotional input. My past academic performance, as well as my personal qualities, provides the foundation for my career. A core characteristic of a successful nurse is teamwork and the ability to act as the liaison between the patients and the doctors. Besides working well in a team, it is also important to seek out help when necessary. Another vital quality is the understanding of diversity and the importance of acknowledging and honoring, rather than judging or ignoring, what makes people different. Critical thinking allows nurses to take action and make referrals. Nurses must be able to obtain autonomy through critical thinking skills that arm them with the ability to respond to the constant changes and needs of a patient in their charge. As nurses build on practical knowledge, gain experience and continue educational endeavors, the intellectually disciplined process allows the nurse to recognize possible patient problems. Lastly, the saying, “Measure twice, cut once” goes a long way when discussing safety in nursing. Regardless of how stressed or overwhelmed a person might feel, it is imperative to pay attention to detail to avoid sentinel events or near misses. These are the crucial qualities that I hope to attain as a nurse and important goals to conform to throughout my years as a registered
After being a nurse for almost three years, I have reached to the conclusion that the nursing profession is like a journey that for some can be beautiful and challenging, for others, can be very difficult and unpleasant. A true nurse needs to have compassion, and the real need to help others not mattering the culture, sex, or race. Unfortunately, that is not always the case and it is there when I feel that I made the right decision when I choose to become a nurse taking this challenging journey.
I have narrowed it down to descriptive or existential beliefs, along with several values such as; accountability, altruism, compassion, and empathy that guide me the most. I like to be shown proof of how or why something works, whether it’s on the monitor hooked to the patient as the therapy is being introduced or just and article showing me evidence based practice. I feel anything else is just a matter of opinion and not scientific proof, and in critical care, opinions can cost lives. I have many values that guide me, but accountability is number one on my list because I feel it is most important that your patient and co-workers can count on you and trust you to be responsible for your own actions. That is part of the trust mechanism, and is very important in nursing. Altruism is also important, it refers to trust as well, if you are not truthful with your patient, they will not trust you. Compassion and empathy are very important and can be grouped together. You must remain human when caring for your patients. I feel that if I ever get to a point in my career that I lose my ability to show compassion for my patient and express empathy, then it is time to choose a new career. An important part of the nursing profession is having a heart and truly caring. To do this, you must also not be afraid to be an advocate for your patient as well, and ask questions if you don’t agree with the treatments that are ordered. Above
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nurses have many jobs and responsibilities and wear many different hats. Nurses can perform at many different levels depending on their scope of practice which is defined by the board of nursing in one’s state of residence. It is important as nurses to understand and follow
Defining what a nurse is varies from person to person. Some have described a nurse as a person who shows care to their patients while others say that nurses assist to regain the ill’s health back. There is no wrong answer in defining what a nurse is. Moreover, I believe that a nurse is one who treats their patients with the dignity and respect that they deserve, and assists them in promoting and preventing their health illness and lastly, enhancing their health to optimal status. Nursing is viewed as a human science because nurse must display a connection with each patient. One must view the patients as a person, who has feelings, who behaves a certain way and who deserve to be well cared for. In addition, nursing is not a profession that treats

To me, nursing means providing holistic care for a patient 's absolute health - the body, mind, and spirit. Nursing does not represent merely seeking to provide optimal physical health, but rather assiting an individual in reaching his or her utmost health status. Too often, health care concentrate on a patient 's diagnosis, disregarding his or her culture, family roles, values, beliefs, and motivations. Behind every diagnosis stands an individual with personailized concerns and lifestyle. Rather than purely converging on a diagnosis, a nurse must consider why a diagnosis occured - addiction, chronic diseases, motor accidents, coping
