Basketball Basketball is one of the many sports I play. It clears my mind from everything. It helps me focus. I don't know what else I would do to burn energy. It really helps me connect with my friends. It's one of the only things I really like to do. I play basketball almost every day. I like basketball because most my friends do it. It has always been basketball. Basketball all started in 1891, and the idea was started by James Naismith. The idea came to him by there being too many outdoor sports that were affected by the weather. Basketball was first played at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. They also consecrated Springfield, Massachusetts to be the destination of the basketball hall of fame. It became famous in the early 1900’s. The guy who was first known was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. After that guys like Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson came in.Then there was the legend, Michael Jordan. Jordan was the most clutch player ever to step foot on a basketball court. He was as cool as the other side of the pillow. He was who everyone wanted to be. He is my role model and many other’s think so aswell. …show more content…
What got me started was when I was in grade school I saw a couple kids playing, and I thought let's try it.It took me a while to get the hang of things.
While I thought I figured it out., that’s when I realized the guys I was playing had it figured out more. I played, played, and played, and I started to get better, and it showed in my play. When I got to middle school, I found more guys who played a lot as well. At first I was no competition, so I practiced. Since then, I have improved. They get better too though, so I realized that if these guys practice a lot then I need to practice alot. Basketball has always been challenging because you have to dribble, score, and rebound. You have to work hard till you feel the sting of the sweat in your
eyes. Basketball nowadays has turned into a disaster. People forget it is a contact sport, yet they still call fouls. Now they call a foul on everything. People think it is a touchy-touchy-feely-good sport, but it isn't. It is a sport where you need to be tough as nails. People just call fouls left, and right and, it gets really annoying. You have to be physical, and if you're not then you should join curling, or some other non-contact sport. Basketball has been there for me my whole life, and I hope it always will be. The sport is always growing, and it is just a sport kids shouldn't base their life off the sport. I am not saying give up, I am saying that there is more to life than basketball. Basketball is just a way to make friends, or be involved in something. It has always been basketball for me. It helps me cool off. I have made a lot of freinds by just playing the sport. It is fascinating to whatch, and even more to play. Basketball has always helped me up. If there ever is a game going on I will always play.
In 1891 James Naismith created the game of basketball, this game started off as a game only man played. James Naismith was a Canadian P. E teacher and invented the game for his students during the winter. The game of basketball started in Massachusetts where Naismith invented the game and has now spread throughout the world. Not only did the sport start to pave its way, but so did women’s basketball. As time went on women’s basketball took off and became more popular with changes along the way.
December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
I play basketball, not only because it gives me a source of exercise, but it also allows me to be engaged in a competitive atmosphere again. On November 6, 1861 the great James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada to Mr. and Mrs. John and Margaret Naismith. As a child James wasn’t very successful in school but excelled in physical activates, this triggered him to drop out of school and become a lumberjack. Soon after this he realized that he needed to turn his life around, so he went back to school to receive a degree in physical education. He later earned a job at a local YMCA in Springfield and was immediately put in task of finding a way to keep men in shape during the winter seasons. After many unsuccessful attempts he finally decided on a sport in which the players must throw a soccer ball into a peach basket on either side of the gymnasium. So on December 21, 1891 the newly formed game known as basketball had its first official game, the final score 1-0. As time passed different basketball leagues were formed the Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. In 1949 the BAA joined another basketball league, the NBL, to create the currant league, the NBA. The NBA was a great success with many people. This success would led it to what it is today, a multi-billion dollar association known for consisting in a wide variety of elite athletes.
Basketball was created by a man named Dr. James Naismith. He created this game not for fun, but because Springfield College’s (then known as the International YMCA Training School) Physical Education class needed a new game to play.
Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian from Almonte, Ontario (NBA.com). Basketball’s popularity rose when it gradually began being played in the Olympics, the first tournament coming in 1936 (NBA.com). Like baseball and football, people saw basketball as a money-making business. And so in 1946, the Basketball Association of American (BAA) was founded by Dr. Arthur Gulick. Three years later, a merger with the National Basketball League created the National Basketball Association (NBA), the official professional basketball league in the United States (Freedman 27) (NBA). There were only eleven teams at the time, versus the thirty there are today.
Basketball today has grown in the United States to bout 300 million people, that is a very large sum (“Bellies”). Although there are many stories to who discovered the game of basketball, it really just depended on who and where the story was told. The man that I have researched that seems to be the most credited is Dr. James Naismith. Here is a little bit of how he started the game and how it has vastly transformed over the years.
Basketball was created by James Naismith a physical education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was created as less injury-prone sport than football. It was first taught at a Young Men Christian Association (YMCA). At first they threw the ball into peach boxes and it has been said that it only took James Naismith an hour to draw up the rules for the game and some of those rules are still in effect today.
It happened watching it on television seeing all the great players such as Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and Larry Bird. The most important influence would have had to been my mother who in her younger years played basketball for the Canadian junior national team. It was when she was playing at the gym I would tag along and just play around. Although I played both basketball and hockey until grade seven it just seemed I was better suited for basketball. With that rate that I had been growing at I was taller and with all the help that I received from my mom I had developed basketball wise much faster than many of the other children my age.
Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. There were never any practices, it was just one or two unorganized games per week. I never took
The game of basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. How it happened is that Naismith was asked by his boss to invent a new game. He came up with a new game that incorporated the rules of soccer but where players were allowed to use their hands. The first day that Naismith taught his students the game, there were 18 students in his class in the YMCA in Springfield. They played with a soccer ball and peach baskets with a small hole in the bottom.
Basketball is one of the interesting sports I have always wanted to engage myself; even as a little child. It was a dream come true when I started playing basketball in my high school. Moreover, I was very good in it, and I became the team leader. Of course, I enjoyed every bite of the time I spent playing basketball.
When I was four, I received my first Fisher Price basketball court. The court was in my house and the basket was only five feet tall. My parents placed it in the living room since it was the only room in the house without carpet. I practiced shooting every day. I would wear my father’s sneakers and imitate basketball moves that I had seen on T.V. At that age, I did not yet have any self-awareness about my potential for the sport, but my father knew it was very likely to become a passion. By the age of five, my father was taking me out to the park with a basketball and I can actually remember the day I made my first basket. After that, I went on to play in basketball leagues, as well as work out with my father in gyms every night. Those were the best of times.
