Basketball was created by James Naismith a physical education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was created as less injury-prone sport than football. It was first taught at a Young Men Christian Association (YMCA). At first they threw the ball into peach boxes and it has been said that it only took James Naismith an hour to draw up the rules for the game and some of those rules are still in effect today.

The first basketball games played at that YMCA used a soccer ball because Naismith could not afford to design a new ball. The first game had 18 players to a game, so nine on both teams.
