The game of basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. How it happened is that Naismith was asked by his boss to invent a new game. He came up with a new game that incorporated the rules of soccer but where players were allowed to use their hands. The first day that Naismith taught his students the game, there were 18 students in his class in the YMCA in Springfield. They played with a soccer ball and peach baskets with a small hole in the bottom. If someone scored a basket, they had to poke a stick up through the hole in the bottom of the basket to get the ball out. December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Although going third in the draft, he recreated the game and is known as the best player to ever touch a basketball; he is Michael Jordan.
Basketball is defined as a game where two teams of five play each on a rectangular court, usually indoors (Basketball/Sport). Basketball was invented by James Naismith on December 1, 1891 (Basketball/Sport). The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the

Basketball originated in 1891 when future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a P.E. class at Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class had been noted for being disorderly, and Naismith was told to invent a new game to keep the young men occupied. Since it was winter and very cold outside, the game had to be played indoors was desirable. Naismith had a flashback to his childhood in Canada, where he and his friends had played "duck on a rock,”. The game involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. He also recalled watching rugby players toss a ball into a box in a gym. He had the idea to nail up boxes and the players would attempt to throw a ball. When he couldn't find boxes he used peach baskets. According to Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about an hour." Most of them still apply in some form of todays. Basketball was a simple game that could be played indoors during winter. Naismith spread the rules freely, and there was a need for Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest "Phog" Allen (1885-1974), who played for Naismith at the University of Kansas and went on to win 771 games as a coa...
On November 6, 1861 the great James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada to Mr. and Mrs. John and Margaret Naismith. As a child James wasn’t very successful in school but excelled in physical activates, this triggered him to drop out of school and become a lumberjack. Soon after this he realized that he needed to turn his life around, so he went back to school to receive a degree in physical education. He later earned a job at a local YMCA in Springfield and was immediately put in task of finding a way to keep men in shape during the winter seasons. After many unsuccessful attempts he finally decided on a sport in which the players must throw a soccer ball into a peach basket on either side of the gymnasium. So on December 21, 1891 the newly formed game known as basketball had its first official game, the final score 1-0. As time passed different basketball leagues were formed the Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946 by owners of the major ice hockey arenas in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. In 1949 the BAA joined another basketball league, the NBL, to create the currant league, the NBA. The NBA was a great success with many people. This success would led it to what it is today, a multi-billion dollar association known for consisting in a wide variety of elite athletes.

Basketball has a huge impact on the sports world. Naismith began to think about a new game that could be played indoors during the winter. In two weeks, he’d come up with the basic concepts that would define the game basket ball: to discourage tackling, players would not be able to run with the ball, but made the game of basketball would was made to pass it; the players would have to loft the ball instead of shoot it. In 1891, Naismith was appointed an instructor by Luther Halsey Gulick, Jr. Head of Physical Education at Springfield. Naismith put sports together such as soccer, American Football, Field Hockey and other sports. “Naismith created the game of basket ball for players to play during football and baseball. The game started with two peach baskets, a soccer ball and 13 rules.”(Original Rules of Basketball 1) Rains and Carpenter said “Naismith loved the idea that a minimum of a basketball, a basket, and a place to play (52).
Basketball has become an international sport. People all around the world enjoy playing it with friends, or even competing for a championship. But haven’t you always wondered where it all began, who were the first people to play it, and who thought of something as simple as putting a ball through a hoop?
Basketball is a popular sport that millions of people play around the world but does everyone know how basketball started and how it evolved throughout history? “Many people do not know that basketball was around since the early 1890s. In 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian-American sports teacher invented this simple sport”(Livestrong.com). Certainly the rules and the style of play wasn’t similar as today’s game. When it was first played in the early ages, there were more carrying the ball and tackling other players in order to get the ball.
“The invention of basketball was not an accident. It was developed to meet a need. Those boys simply would not play ‘Drop the Handkerchief.’” (James Naismith Quotes). In November, 1861, the inventor of “basketball” was born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada (Biography of James Naismith). But it never crossed his mind that he’d be the creator of one of the most popular world-wide sports known to man (James Naismith…:Inventor of Basketball). Dr. James Naismith had the body foundation of a fine athlete. As he matured, he developed characteristics of a modest, down-to-earth man. Mr. Naismith was a natural athlete and leader. During his childhood he was often looked up to by his peers (Biography of James Naismith).
In the 1920s, people had time to spare due to the influx of wealth, and while some threw huge prohibition-era parties, others indulged in basketball and even began to form professional leagues. Both the increase in popularity of basketball and the chaotic parties Gatsby threw show the success the country was having economically during the twenties. Moving on, basketball has humble origins, and not much thought was put into its original creation. In 1891, James Naismith created the game of basketball using makeshift equipment he found laying around his classroom: half bushel peach baskets and a soccer ball. Naismith made use of literal trash laying around, showing the modest roots of basketball.
Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. The National Basketball Association has risen in popularity and is now one of America’s more popular sports. Because basketball continues to be a popular sport, a fan should learn about the origin of the NBA, how the game evolved from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, and how the players today impact the way it is played.
Most sports develop over time out of games that people begin to play informally. Not so with basketball. The history of Basketball shows that it was a game that was intentionally invented. In 1891, James Naismith was trying to create an indoor sport that his kids at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts could play in the brutal New England winter. His kids played soccer and football all during the fall season, but when winter came it was way too cold to play these sports. He wanted them to stay in good shape but he had nothing for them to do. Dr. Naismith combined elements of outdoor games like soccer and lacrosse with the concept of a game that he played when he was a child, Duck on a Rock. To win Duck on a Rock, players threw rocks to try to hit a target that was placed on top of a large boulder. A ball and a hoop are the simple things of the sport that now have players and crazy fans in nearly every part of the world.
