Personality can be described as a person’s psychological characteristics and behaviors, evolving from environmental and biological circumstances (Solomon, 2017). Therefore, people tend to respond differently to situations with work and everyday life. Contributing much research to associate how personalities affect the behaviors of consumers, “The Big Five Project Personality Test” was developed to enhance educational activities (Potter, John, & Soto, 2015). Taking the personality assessment, concerning five segments of personality, I was really surprised at the results, scoring a forty-eight on the subject of open-mindedness. People with high scores tend to demonstrate creativity, where people scoring low have very little desire to explore something new. I have yearned to build on this trait by watching other people react to situations, in addition to having the opinion that anger is a weakness. Therefore, if someone demonstrates a negative action toward me, such as yelling or even being totally silent, I remove myself for a moment, taking a deep breath, in addition to realizing that usually I am not the problem, but rather the target of relief for someone else. If I enter an establishment that is chaotic, with tension in the air, or a sense of someone arguing, I will quickly leave, usually making the choice of terminating my business with the organization completely. An example would be a restaurant, where the server cannot seem to get anything right, complaining about everything, demonstrating rudeness, in addition to missing in action for long periods of time. Today, many researchers and psychologists believe that they are five fundamental dimensions of personality – often referred to as “The Big Five” or “FFM”: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and openness. This theory – unlike Cattell’s theory, which was deemed to be too complex, and Eysenck’s, which was said to be incomplete – emerged to describe the basic traits that serve as the building blocks of personality (Cherry, n.d). Highly extraverted individuals are assertive and sociable, rather than quiet and reserved. Agreeable individuals are compliant and polite, rather than hostile and indecorous. Conscientious individuals are goal-oriented and orderly, rather than impulsive and disorganized. Neurotic individuals are prone to experiencing negative emotions, such as anxiety, depression, and irritation, rather than being emotionally stable. Lastly, highly open individuals have a wide-range rather than narrow range of interests, are sensitive rather than indifferent to art and beauty, and prefer peculiarity to social norms (Soto & Jackson, 2013). Evidence of this theory has been mounting over the past 50 years, beginning with the research of D. W. Fiske (1949) and later prolonged upon by other researchers including Norman (1967), Smith (1967), Goldberg (1981), and McCrae & Costa (1987) (Cherry, n.d).
Who am I? A Logician? An Architect? An Entertainer, maybe? Quite surprisingly, this personality type describes me to the letter, literally. According to the Myers-Briggs Personality Test, I am a Debater or an ENTP. Initially, I was so suspicious of the accuracy of the test that not only did I review all of the other personality types, I took the test twice. Nonetheless, I received the same result each of the three times I took the test, and, I must say, I do agree with them.
After completing this personality test and reviewing the results, I found that the overall scoring accurately described me in most areas. The Big Five Personality test scores in five different areas involving openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Openness, the first area of the personality test, is described as a person’s ability to think in abstract, complex ways. In this section, I scored a 70% which means that I am moderately open to experience. People who are creative, intellectual and adventurous tend to score higher, whereas people who are dull, practical and more focused tend to score lower.
Personality is massive part of an individual’s identity. Our personalities dictate our patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. An individual’s personality exposes them to predispositions and habits that influence their actions and lives. Early on, personality assessments consisted of physical features ranging from head shape and facial characteristics to body type. In today’s world, personality assessments are mainly based around traits. Traits are simply descriptions of one’s habitual patterns of behavior, thought and emotion. The most popular personality assessment is the Five-Factor Model, also known as The Big Five. This model allows us to describe people based on the five main traits/dimensions. After taking the Big Five Personality Test I’ve concluded that it is a fairly accurate assessment of my personality. 1) On Openness to Experience/Intellect I ranked at the 53 percentile, with the description that I don’t typically seek out new experiences. I would agree with this assessment. While I am somewhat creative, I am no artist. It takes me more time to do something creative than something analytical, but I do still like to be creative on occasion.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. The Five-Factor Model of Personality is a system used in order to describe an individual’s personality traits. By requiring said individual to answer a series of questions, this test is able to decipher the traits that are most likely evident within their life. The Five-Factor Model of Personality test gives the test subject a series of situational options. Using the subject’s responses, psychologist match the answers to the personality in which best relates. A highly accurate description of ones’ personality can be easily configured by using the Five-Factor Model of Personality by testing either high or low in the following areas; openness to experience, extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
Upon completion of the Big Five Personality test, my results were somewhat surprising to me. Overall, I scored on the low end for Openness to Experience/Intellect, Extraversion and Neuroticism dimensions and on the high end for Conscientiousness and Agreeableness dimensions. For the Openness to Experience/Intellect, my score indicated that I prefer traditional and familiar experiences. In our heads, we all have a perception of our own personality, so when faced with the reality of it, it can be hard to accept. Some people have a better recognition of their personality traits, I like to think I’m one of those people. Before taking the personalities tests, I assessed a few key characteristics about myself: hardworking, stubborn, bright, lazy, extroverted, slow to trust. Hands shaking, I unbuckled my seatbelt and pushed open the bright green rental car door. I looked up and took in the Tuscan building that would house me for the three weeks at camp. I heard the sound of kids laughing, cars rumbling along the sloped pavement, and the movement of suitcases being scraped across the asphalt. This essay explores the nature of personality, with the intention of highlighting its flexibility. The results of numerous empirical research studies are examined in order to investigate if, and how personality changes over time.
