My Writing Journey Although many will argue that great writing will require time and practice, opponents claim that great writing is like a puzzle which means one can put the pieces together to create an astonishing puzzle. This was the case when I was a 10th grade. As a tyro, I didn’t know much about writing elements and styles. Fortunately, one of my English teachers, Mrs. Roberson, change my outlook on writing. She taught me countless techniques. From that point, I started reading books to increase my knowledge and vocabulary. This was an incredibly wondrous experience for me. My veracity is another element that brightened and enlivened my writing style. In my narrative writing, I used many rhetorical devices to create a credible tone, so my audience can understand my story easily. The title of my narrative was "Urologist: Born to Make a Difference." The main objective of this narrative was to write about my personal goals and plans for the future. In addition, it emphasizes my interest in going to medical school while displaying my main aspirations and motives. I used innumerable examples and details to formulate my points. As a storyteller, my writing is chock-full of astonishments and delights. This particular narrative writing gave me the opportunity to express my future goals openly. As I have said, my analytical writing abilities enhanced and it enabled me to write riveting papers and essays. In the same way, my argumentative techniques became better and better. The main growth that I see in my argumentative writing is the well-developed reasons that I used in my papers and essays. My argumentative essay was to examine whether struggle leads to success or failure. the adversities that immigrants face when they moved to a new place. In that essay, I wrote an argumentative piece about a young man called Ali, who relocated to the United States. Ali faced many difficulties during his journey, but he didn't let those obstacles limit his potential. Although the essay was terrific overall. One thing that stood out to me about that essay was the fact that immigrants like Ali tend to achieve extraordinary results in short amount of time. This, in fact, was astonishing to me. Ultimately, my argumentative writing is fascinating and convincing. As a matter of fact, I could take a very controversial topic and make it engaging and compelling so that reveals a lot about my argumentative
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
Learning to read and write are both considered to be fundamental human skills, that we begin to learn from the day we start school. As time advances, as do our minds, and we are expected to evolve in our reading and writing skills. Finishing high school is a large milestone for the lives of young adults; however, there is so much to learn in order to reach the next big milestone. To be a writer in college can challenge our preconceived thoughts on how we write. Although some skills remain unchanged, high school graduates are faced with overcoming new ways of doing a skill that seems so simple that it is practically innate. The definition of writing skills for college students is much different than high school. However, considering we have come so far it is time to go over the information we already know and challenge ourselves with ideas that we are yet to learn more about.
Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. To accomplish this we have all had a person to inspire us, to drive us, to get us over the hump of confidence that we need to succeed. Still to be successful we need to count on ourselves to succeed.
In his essay, "Teach Writing as a Process not a Product," Donald Murray outlines the major difference between the traditional pedagogy that directed the teaching of writing in the past and his newly hailed model. Traditionally, Murray explains, English teachers were taught to teach and evaluate students' writing as if it was a finished product of literature when, as he has discovered, students learn better if they're taught that writing is a process. For Murray, once teachers regard writing as a process, a student-centered, or writer-centered, curriculum falls into place. Rules for writing fall by the way side as writers work at their own pace to see what works best for them.
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
Despite my best efforts, writing remains a source of self-doubt and frustration. However, something has changed this year. Maybe it was the encouragement of the many different English teachers that cycled through, or maybe it was my personal
Writing is a skill that not many people take the time to sharpen over the course of their lives because many people don’t believe it carries much weight, as least in a professional sense. And it is a very hard skill to acquire, especially if somebody doesn’t have a natural talent for it to begin with, or just simply isn’t interested. Throughout this quarter I shed the skin of the formulaic writing that I had used all throughout high school and replaced it with a more creative, professional style. Not only has this enabled me to make better, stronger arguments, it taught me how to find flaws in other people’s as well, making me both a better reader and a better writer.
Although you might not know me yet, I can tell you that in these past few years of writing essays and papers, I have learned a lot about who I am as a writer and know that you will appreciate my work in the future. My previous English teachers have taught me many techniques about writing a good essay and ways I could improve my work. They have given me lots of advice, but also told me things that I’ve disagreed with. Even though I’m not a big fan of writing essays, I truly believe that since I started writing in grade school until now, I have improved as a writer, so much, that whenever I look back and read a paper that I wrote, I feel surprised and shocked due to the differences compared to my work nowadays. Overall, even though I might not be the best writer in the world, I still work hard each year to improve my writing and use many techniques to show my teachers what type of a writer I am.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.

My identity as a writer has evolved and grown as I have through out my life. As a young child in school my writing identity was far from what it is today as a nineteen year old university student. My identity as a writer has been influenced by my social contexts and my culture along the way. My identity as a writer has been constructed by my life experiences. As children we are taught to write about the world around us, the people in our lives and our own personal experiences this allows us to write a primary narrative where we tell stories about our own lives or close members of social circles such as our parents (Huili, 2005).
My developing self-knowledge of what a writer really consists of now will immensely influence the way I teach writing to my future students Students today who are learning skills of reading and writing need to be surrounded by enthusiastic, literate teachers and educators (Loane & Muir, 2017).
I have always loved books and reading and have always wanted to go into a profession that would allow me to be around books. The definition of a writer is people who write books, stories, or articles as a job or a regular occupation. To become a writer, you need a passion for books, dedication, and a Bachelor of Arts in English, Journalism or Communications. Becoming a writer will allow me to continue doing what I love while also giving me a chance to share the passion I have for books with others who have the same passion.
Although reading had always come naturally to me (I scored an 800 on the reading portion of the SAT), I used to inform others that I would rather have someone else do the writing for me, as I was happy simply reading. Unfortunately, that cute line did little to alleviate my writing assignments in school, and so I accepted the necessity of writing, without falling in love with it. During my junior year, I began to truly understand that while reading was my passion, writing was a skill, one that would become even more important to me as I grew. The importance of writing, to me, can be summed in a single word: communication. Writing, in its most basic form, is the distillation of ideas into a format whereby others can come to understand those ideas. Personally, my life “plan” is to become a wife, a mother, and an English teacher. In each of these facets, communication is vital, integral to the role. Although I don’t anticipate writing five-paragraph essays to my children every day, the skill of effective communication taught through writing can only improve my own ability to share my ideas.
