We have started our long journey to North America. It shouldn’t be that much farther according to John Smith, our leader. Our journeys purpose is to start a new English colony in North America. While in North America we have also been instructed to find some gold and silver. This trip has been long and exhausting, I can’t wait to reach our destination and catch up on as much sleep as possible. One of my main fears is to come across some natives that might be a friendly as we think. No telling what could happen to us and our people. We have finally reached our destination in North America, and already I can tell the major differences from Europe compared to America. During our final few turns in the journey we lost some of our men to the natives.
She examines some similarities in today’s “white culture” and the historical attitude of the exploring Europeans. The Europeans, when inhabiting North America, “just moved in and said they had God on their side and the Indians weren’t much anyway but a few of them could work for them sometimes if they behaved themselves, and the rest were lined up for disposal” (377). The Europeans believed themselves superior to the Indians; any and all action – fair and unfair alike – taken against the Indians was justifiable because it helped the Europeans. Grover argues that this irresponsible approach is the basis of the white culture. White culture is simply American culture taken and modified as seen fit by white people.

The European explorers and colonizers and Native Americans had varied relationships during their encounters in the New World. They both feared and misunderstood each other. This fear led to the two groups often mistreating each other. However, there were always times where they depended on each other’s kindness and treated each other with care. There are examples of both in the following narratives: In the letter by Christopher Columbus, he talks about the natives being timid and how he uses them to help him. In “from Richard Frethorne, to His Parents”, Frethorne tells about the Indians destroying crops and killing people. In the Soveraignty and Goodness of God by Mary Rowaldson, the author tells about her eleven weeks in captivity by the Indians. At times, they behaved as lawless savages. At other times, they showed her kindness and care.

Many people think that Christopher Columbus was the first European to set foot in America, but this conventional belief is wrong; Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer set foot in Newfoundland almost 500 years before Columbus was even born. This paper will cover everything about Leif Erikson’s life including his grandfather’s banishment from Norway, and Leif’s father’s exile from Iceland. Leif Erikson’s early life, his family, and his visit to Norway to serve under the king. The first recorded European to see North America, Bjarni Herjólfsson, and Leif Erikson’s voyage to America. This paper is also going to talk about Leif Erikson’s brother, Thorvald Erikson’s voyage to Vinland because his tale is interesting. Near the end of this research paper, it will have a paragraph on Leif Erikson’s later life. Finally at the end of this paper it is going to talk about the unknown reason why no other Europeans sailed to Vinland, and Leif’s impact on modern day North America.

When the Europeans crossed the Atlantic, they not only fought and killed many natives; they slaughtered countless more without even knowing it, signing the death warrants of millions simply by meeting . The real detrimental effect to the Indians was their exposure to the diseases inadvertently brought over by the colonists; these "most hideous enemies…invisible killers which those men brought in their blood and breath." Us as a whole are here to find gold and silver to take home with us to Spain. We entered a small Native Village. We stayed there for the very harsh winter. Many of us hungry through that felt like a long period of time. These people had a very handsome look to them they were very strong looking and were very skinny.
Although Columbus had the opportunity to work out an agreement and exist peacefully with the Native Americans, he was focussed on his mission to “find riches and conquer new lands.” The three main sources of controversy involving Columbus's interactions with the Native Americans are “the use of violence and slavery, the forced conversion of native peoples to Christianity, and the introduction of a host of new diseases that would have dramatic long-term effects. . .” These topics have been debated and mulled over for over five hundred years by many different historians.
The Encounter is regarded as a high water mark in the European arrival into the America’s. The Encounter was the meeting between the Europeans, the Africans, and the Native Americans. Perhaps, the most important meeting was between the Europeans and the Native Americans, When Columbus arrived, he discovered a whole new world that was new to many people at the time. No longer was these groups confined to their own world, as they adapted and learned about the people beyond their back doors. With the Encounter, multiple changes were brought about the civilizations which affected them for the rest of their existence. The Encounter is regarded as one of the biggest moments in history since it shaped the world for what it is today.
In Conclusion the migration of indigenous peoples to America is still today a subject of ongoing debate. New evidence is found yearly that helps to support a new theory and denounce old beliefs held from years in the scientific community. The actual path of native Americans to the Americas may never be agreed upon totally but through continued research and study we can continue to learn more about these humble beginnings of Western Civilization.
In Thomas King’s novel, The Inconvenient Indian, the story of North America’s history is discussed from his original viewpoint and perspective. In his first chapter, “Forgetting Columbus,” he voices his opinion about how he feel towards the way white people have told America’s history and portraying it as an adventurous tale of triumph, strength and freedom. When I first hear the word Indian or Native American I am instantly transported to the past where the whispery echo of pain filled cries and the shouts of angry men seem to weave in and out of time. Groups of Native Americans were forced away from their homes; their homes reduced to hot ashes and black smoke or more commonly taken over by European settlers. The Indians were pushed out of European society and were involuntary made to walk on the mixture of sharp stone and dusty paths that eventually ended in disease and was quickly followed by death.
