My First Trip to America It was about two years ago when I arrived in United States of America, and I still remember the day when I left my native country, Honduras. As I recall, one day previous to my departure, I visited my relatives who live in San Pedro Sula. They were all very happy for me to see me except my grandmother Isabel. She looked sad; even though she tried to smile at all times when I was talking to her, I knew that deep inside of her, her heart was broken because of my departure the next morning. I remember that I even told her, “Grandma, do not worry about me, I’ll be fine. I promise that I will write you letters and send you pictures as much as possible.” Here reply was, “I know sweetie I know you will.” Suddenly after she said that I started to cry. For som...

The Mann Gulch wildfire was a tragic event that took the lives of 13 firefighters who had jumped into the area to battle the fast-moving fire. The tragedy was a severe hit to the Forest Service, which had not experienced a death during a decade of smoke jumping (Rothermel, 1993). Along with the horrific deaths, Rothermel (1993) states the Mann Gulch fire had serious consequences for the Forest Service and its research branch. The fire disaster changed the landscape of wildfire firefighting. Due to the tragedy, the Forest Service would establish new training techniques and improved safety measures for its firefighters and smokejumpers along with more emphasis on fire research and the science of fire behavior (Lehman, 2009). With the training and research, better firefighting techniques and equipment evolved (Lehman, 2009). The analysis will evaluate how the firefighters
It was August 8th of 2013 when my dad got a call from my Aunt Theresa. She urged him to come over to her house because she had devastating news. The car ride to her house was quiet. The weather was gloomy, the sky was filled with dark cumulus clouds. When we pulled up to my Aunt’s house, the adults were organized into a small circle. My uncles were supporting my grandma, however, I thought nothing of it. My parents had told me to go inside because they had a matter to attend to. I went inside to hang out with my cousins. I saw them a couple days before, but the feeling of happiness never subsides when I see them.
Yellowstone’s landscapes have longed been shaped by fires. “The natural history of fire in the park includes large-scale conflagrations sweeping across the pa...
A Political, Cultural, and Religious Description of the Current Atmosphere as Exists in Israel Israel, in the 1990's, is in a continual state of political, cultural and religious flux. Religion continues to play a central factor in the difficulties which the state has been and continues to experience. This unique country is characterized by an amalgam of cultural and ethnic diversity. This historical and cultural fact ensures that the difficulties the state has been experiencing in realizing self-adjustment will continue. At the same time, there exist mostly positive and persistent facets of the culture which continue unabated as will be discussed. Israel is characterized by many religious groups including Greek Orthodox, Muslim, Palestinians, Jews, Arabs and others. Similarly, the Labor Ruling Party is integrally linked to religious orientation and has been embroiled in domestic controversy and flagellation from many sides in recent years. OVERVIEW Statehood in Israel was attained some three thousand years ago, and has served as the home of the Jewish people who are credited with giving the world the Bible. As mentioned, however, this land is comprised of many different groups. The Jewish people constitute 81.8%, and Muslims represent 14.1%. The Christians comprise 2.4% and the Druze and others make up 1.4%. Some five million people from different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds live in Israel today. It is a country of immigration, and in the decades prior to the establishment of the state, the majority of newcomers came from Europe, joining Jews whose families had lived in the land for generations. Immediately following independe...
National data gives us an indication of the severity of this issue. When 1 in 5-woman report being victims of severe physical violence (NISVS, 2010), we must ask ourselves if enough is being done to prevent this from occurring. From a historical point, there has always almost been a distinction from men on woman violence. Based on the disparity of cases reported, male inflicted violence on females is much higher and prevalent. When the perpetrators of DV, and IPV are predominately males, we can no longer dismissed this issue as a cultural, or
He’s been stalking her, which was evident by the facts that he knew where she lived, he knew all her friends’ names and where her family was. He clearly had ulterior motives and this became evident to Connie after talking with him for a bit. As Connie came to the realization that this man was not going to leave her alone, the fear set in. I felt terrified for Connie, in that very moment as she stood in her kitchen behind the screen door.
Throughout the story it is mentioned several times that Connie derives her ideas about boys from the music she listens to. The preconceived notions Connie has about romance, have caused her to surround herself with a fantasy world from which she cannot escape. In this fantasy world Connie portrays herself as an adult, whose desire is able to draw the attention of all boys
Our world has evolved into ways that makes it challenging for mankind to keep up with to maintain our civilization going. Throughout our world we face many catastrophe, some that we can control and some that we can home that will leave minimal damage. These catastrophes can range from earthquakes that cause a little shake for a couple seconds to a hurricane that wipes out an entire state. One form that is a controversial topic whether it benefits our planet or causes damage to it is wildfires. A wildfire is a fire in an area with combustible vegetation that occurs in the countryside or a rural area. Many people look at wildfires at only a bad thing but in fact when wildfires are allowed to burn in areas that do not impact human development,
So the thing about the prescribed burning is that they are highly feared amongst the general population. The fear is that prescribed fires can tear out of control. People really fear fire can you blame them?. Fire is unpredictable and most definitely has a mind of its own. Its something that should be handled with caution but never feared.
I decided to begin my first search on the Internet. Since I had access to both a computer, and an Internet connection, I had no issues in that regard. The first article that I explored was called “Wildfires,” from the National Geographic website. In the article I learned that, depending on the wind condition, wildfires can have different reactions. For example, in the article, they stated that, “wildfires can burn acres of land and consume everything in their paths in mere minutes” (“Wildfires”). I also learned the positive effects that wildfires has on the environment. For example, naturally-occurring wildfires are fundamental in nature, as they return nutrients to the soil by burning dead trees, plants, and land. They also act as disinfectant, by removing poison plants, insects, and all sorts of dangerous species (“Wildfires”). That 's the information that I learned from the article, and while it wasn 't much, I did manage to find key information. I also
Everyone has dream in life. Some people have a dream to visit different places and some people want to become successful in future. Likewise I also had a dream to come USA and to become successful in future. I was 17 when I came here with my parents. I heard a lot from my friends about their first day in USA. They said it was so sad however mine was the best day and the long day in my life which I can’t ever forget. I still remember that day in USA; I was sleeping in the airplane because I was so tired of traveling 18 hours flight. I was in a deep sleep suddenly I heard someone was calling my name because of that I wake up. It was my mom who was calling me. She told me to look outside I rub my eyes and looked outside. I still remember that moment when I first looked California, USA through plane window, those tall building which I saw in movies looks like a plane ground. I was so excited to be here in USA I feel like it is a piece of heaven.
The responses from the U.S. Forest Service to wildfires through the majority of the twentieth century were counterproductive. 5 Furthermore, the northern Rocky Mountains region is the only area in the United States that has had significant increase in human-caused fires from 1940 to 2000. 6 To be effective, the fire policies of the United States Forest Service need to study past forest fires and recognize forest fire as a critical ecosystem process that should be studied at local levels and have planned and controlled fires which will reduce the likelihood of continued increase in human-caused fires. Forest types that are part of the Rocky Mountain ecosystem such as ponderosa pine and mixed conifer have been negatively impacted by fire exclusion, because when these forests are left untouched they acquire higher fuel loads and hazards as well as increased numbers of shade-tolerant species of plants that serve as easy tinder in a forest fire and accelerate the rate and spread of potential
In order to be culturally relativistic when reading about the history of the conflict in the Middle East, one must understand that while anger and a desire for land play a role in the fighting these are not the main causes of this conflict. It is necessary to look beyond these common myths of war in order to look for the true causes of the bloodshed. A deep underlying truth that could explain some reason for this turmoil is that neither side, Israel nor Palestine, has come to terms with living with each other. Therefore, the two groups’ cultures clash as members of each side bind together in compassion and loyalty while fighting to gain power and prestige for their people.
It seems that no matter how devastating that wildfires can be the rate of wildfires does not appear to decline. Wildfires are one of the most life-threatening events on our planet, yet there are not any easy solutions to this
