I have been waiting months to go on a trip up to Mohonk Mountain House. I was told about this trip
sometime in August. We left to go to New Paltz on November 9th and returned home on November 12,
2017.
In late August an idea was brought up to go to Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York. The
reason why we were going on this trip was for my girlfriend’s birthday, since she loves the outdoors, this
was a perfect place for us to go to. Fast forward to a week before the trip, all I was doing was imagining
how the weekend will be. We were leavening around 7pm on Thursday so that we would not run into traffic.
All of us had a quick dinner and left immediately after we finished. It would take about 2 hours to get up
there. The first hour was a smooth ride, and the second hour we ran into a lot of traffic and didn’t get there

We had met my girlfriends aunt at the hotel that is a couple towns away from Mohonk.
On Friday we woke up at 8 A.M. to have breakfast and then leave for Mohonk. We got the car packed
and left around 9:30 am, and arrived at Mountain House around 10am. We couldn’t get our room yet so we
went for a short hike. We took the shortest path so that we could be back in time for our buffet lunch. When
we got the the top mountain we explored different paths so that we can hike on them during the week. We
started to head back so that we can be on time for lunch. After we had lunch we went back up the mountain
so we can climb the tower on top of the mountain so that we can get a better view. We had leave to get to a
tomahawk throwing activity that we all had decided to do after we got back from the hike. After we threw a
couple tomahawks my girlfriend, her aunt and I went for a hike to see the sunset on top of another
mountain.
On Saturday my girlfriend, her aunt and I decided to go on a 22 mile bike ride. We started off

After a great night of sleep we headed out to the world renown mountain of Jackson Hole. It is known for being the steepest mountain on which a ski resort is set up. It is also know for having a great view of Grand Teton, one of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains. We could not have asked for a better day of riding. there was a fresh 14” of snow under our boards and after a little bit of exploring we found some great out of bounds and woods riding.
The trip began when I took a small green pencil and signed by name on the release forms needed to hike in Yosemite National Park. I and nine of my friends left the ranger station that night with a neatly folded map and a felling of excitement to what lay ahead. The long drive to the park left us tired and in need of a good night’s sleep. We decided to stay in tent city like most hikers do before they set out for their trek. Tent city was a large subdivision of tents that resembled a community of houses. Each tent was perfectly uniformed in its appearance and made up a total of fifty tents. Before we went to bead, we studied our maps and made an itinerary to the amount of hiking we would do.
We loaded the van, and then we set off to go home. The trip home was pretty quiet. We stop a few times and my Mom always says “We’re almost there, guys.” I’m so glad I did. Well, after many, many grueling hours, we finally arrived home!
The mountains were tall (11,000 feet +) and covered with bright powdery snow. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. I was eager to set-up camp and prepare for our nine day hunt. But, Dad said that we had to drive around and check out all the good places, just to make sure that we were in the best area. This was partially understandable, but since I am a teenager I'm not supposed to understand anything! So, we spent another several hours driving. We went up and down through the mountains and then we saw it. The spot was beautiful; it was right on the edge of a vertical drop-off, over looking everything. It was like paradise, but colder!
I got a small emoji. By then, it was almost 11 pm, so we headed to the
We got there. I did a 20mph test run to see if there were any potholes or bumps of any kind.Thank goodness
We sat there for a few more minutes then I got up and yelled for everyone to get ready to start moving again. I donned my pack and tightened the straps, and after making sure everyone else was ready, started off down the winding trail to the night’s campsite.
On the winding, mountainous seven-mile drive, my ears crackled and popped as we ascended through the mountains. Suddenly, a mother black bear emerged alongside the road with her three little cubs wandering closing behind her, so I quickly grabbed my camera to capture the image of these striking animals. Approaching Clingmans Dome, I observed numerous dying trees and areas of bareness towering the Spruce-fir forest. Finally, I arrived at the Forney Ridge Parking Area below the summit and began the short, steep one-half mile hike on the paved spiral concrete ramp leading to the observation tower. The sun filtered through the misty-fog as I climbed higher, the mountain air had a fresh scent, and the breeze was slightly chilly. As I reached the top of the observation tower, I experienced some shortness of breath from the 6,643 feet of high elevation, so I took a moment to rest before enjoying the view. The concrete circular platform surrounding the tower provided an awe- inspiring panoramic view of the scenery for miles. The incredible scenery looked like an artist’s palette with vivid hues of green, shades of brown, and touches of yellow speckled throughout the landscape. The natural wonders in sight were breathtaking, just inspirational beauty. As I peered upward, I felt a sense of floating in a sea of clouds as they rolled in and out
We then turned off the driveway, making sure to roll down our windows, so we can breathe the fresh mountain air, at least until the next time we come back, and once again start the bumpy road home.
some lunch while I was on the sofa. After lunch was ready I ate all my food
One of the most enjoyable things in life are road trips, particularly to the Colorado mountains. Getting to spend time with your family and friends, while being in a beautiful place, is irreplaceable. The fifteen-hour road trip may feel never-ending, but gazing at the mountains from afar makes life’s problems seem a little smaller and causes worries to become a thing of the past. Coming in contact with nature, untouched, is a surreal experience. My family trip to the Colorado mountains last summer was inspiring.
With no hesitation, we presented this idea to our mother and she backed us up. After much anticipation, it was decided, our 2014 summer vacation would take place in Colorado to enjoy mountains and exceptional music. One would think the highlight of the trip was the concert, however, one could not be any more wrong. The highlight was literally the highest point of the trip. Inching our way up Pike’s Peak to an elevation of 14,115 miles (“About Pike’s Peak”) proved to be quite the adventure.
On our first day of school, I arrived 5:30 in the morning and because it is the first day
