Over the last 8 years I have been in the positions to learn many different skills and ways of approaching various situations. My interest in as an Exercise Physiologist intern with Henry Ford Health Systems I assisted in cardiac rehabilitation and exercise stress testing in addition to providing patients' education for proper physical activity and event lifestyle modification as a weight management consultant. Since finishing the internship I have been a practicing personal trainer since 2007 working with many types of clients from the everyday working mother keeping in shape to the athlete trying to reach the next level of competition. Recently, I finished a summer internship with the Central Michigan University Strength and Conditioning Department.
During my experience I assisted Coach Jason Novak and the CMU staff with administering the off-season strength and conditioning development for the football program. While with CMU I had the chance to observe the off-season development workouts for men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, softball, field hockey and volleyball. In addition to this great experience I worked three years as a Strength and Conditioning coach at Mid-Michigan Community College working with men’s and women’s basketball and soccer. I also had an opportunity to spend one year as volunteer assistant coach with CMU Track and Field, and one year as assistant coach for the CMU Collegiate Bowling Team.
For this project, the certified athletic trainer who I have shadowed for almost eight hours in just one day is Candace O'Bryan, currently the athletic trainer at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron. Candace has worked at Hoban now entering her third year at the high school. She works alone as a trainer there but works along side one team doctor who is at every game, and the other one being a neurosurgeon but is just a parent helping out.
I would like to enter the University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program on the basis that I love being around sports and I enjoy working with and taking care of athletes. I first became interested in Athletic Training when I was given a tour of the UNC Athletic Training facility by Kevin Guskiewicz, who is the current dean of UNC College of Arts and Sciences. He was the previous head Athletic Trainer for UNC. After the experience, I quickly enrolled in Athletic Training classes in high school and began to learn the basics for becoming an Athletic Trainer. I loved learning about different injuries and how to treat them because as a student athlete I am very accident prone and figuring out what is wrong with my body is important for my collegiate athletic career. I have also had a dream of working with professional athletes. I have been involved with sports my whole life and have always considered these professional athletes as my role models. Growing up my parents ran a little lake on the outskirts of my hometown of Shelbina here in northeast Missouri. I was the "tough" one out of my family by the time I was in the ninth grade I could use two weed eaters at the same time and pick up the back end of a golf cart. At 5'3 and wearing size 16 I was big girl and was often made fun of by my peers. I wanted to be something other than the "fat girl" at school. So I became stronger than an ox and used that to my advantage. My high school coach seen me one day bench pressing a picnic table and begged me to join the weightlifting program. I excelled at the class and became known as "Pipes" I went from being the chunky girl to being the girl that was respected for my bench pressing and squats. My coach believed in me and that was all I needed to continue to do my best. That year I made a C average except for weightlifting where I got an A and earned the respect from my peers and my coach.

The two clinical settings that I have had experiences in are an outpatient setting and a nursing home setting. At both locations I assisted the Physical Therapist with patient exercises and care. The experiences that came from these two facilities expanded my knowledge and need to help others. These internship experiences provided me with an opportunity to watch professionals with many years of experience show me the variety of ways that they treat patients.

I am passionate about exercise and living a healthy lifestyle and the positive effects it can have on a person’s life. I know this from experience. I was living an unhealthy lifestyle as a binge eater and a semi-pro couch potato. When I started to exercise it gave me the self-discipline I needed to change everything that wasn’t working in my life. It increased my self-esteem and gave me a positive new outlook. There are seemingly endless opportunities in the field of healthcare. My primary focuses throughout my future career are to advocate lifelong wellness and healing among patients through exercise, and awareness of what is right for the human body. I chose to apply to physical therapy programs, because I indubitably believe that promoting optimal physical function, along with a nutritious diet, are keys to a healthy lifestyle. In addition, taking care of joints and muscles, and eating properly correlate to decreased heart health problems.
Where an adult’s life journey begins is not necessarily the same path he or she will find themselves following later in life. My life’s journey has taken many twist and turns, but with every unknown I have been blessed because I have refused to succumb to the fear of the unknown. The greatest treasures in my life have recently become my teachers and inspirations, and it is because of my children that I once again delve into the unknown. Sports have been and continue to be instrumental in the relationship I have cultivated with my children, and it is due to their active social lives that I am pursuing a degree in Sport and Exercise Science. I had a lot of hard work and training ahead of me in order to become prepared and get in shape. I had to decide on, and commit to, a training plan that would work best for me in order to become as capable as a I could be for the journey ahead of me.
The internship that I acquired during the summer of 2010 at the Greenwood Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Center (GSIRC), allowed me to gain an immeasurable amount of experience during my tenure at this facility. Within this period, the exposure to new concepts within the physical therapy industry allowed me to observe and work hands on with patients of all ages and disabilities that exposed me to various treatment plans and programs to restore client’s mobility. The essential Physical Education and Exercise Science (PEES) courses taken at Lander University were beneficial to my academic knowledgebase, which prepared me and developed me for the opportunity within the physical therapy discipline. Working as an intern taught me the responsibility of time management and working within a lean schedule that allow me to further develop my skill set. This reflection paper will illustrate my classroom experience, internship experience, and learning experience.
I used to go to the gym on a regular basis; then, due to our finances, my mother cancelled our family membership. Giving up on working out was not an option because I had been exercising my whole life. In frustration, I went out to my backyard. I tried thinking about where else I could go to continue training my body, and after seeing a variety of items lying around everywhere, I realized that I did not need to go anywhere. Everything I needed was right in front of me. I quickly transformed my backyard into my gym. Cinder Blocks and buckets of water functioned as dumbbells. Old heavy logs that were sitting and collecting dust became bars to bench press with. In place of a treadmill, I used a long strip of grass that ran across the side of the vicinity to do sprints. I made heavy workout rope out of a hose that I filled with sand. After converting many other ordinary objects into exercising equipment, it became clear to me that there is no machine or gear in the gym that I cannot recreate in my backyard.
Sweat flies from the athlete’s body as she finishes her workout, pushing to the very last moment possible. Her body collapses to the ground in front of her, and she indulges in a few swallows of icy water, recovering from the hours of hard work. While extremely exhausted, this athlete is deeply satisfied. This uplifting feeling is one experienced by people who like to push themselves to the next level. However, not everyone functions this way, and because the satisfaction of finishing a workout is great to give to others, a select group of people will go as far as to share it with everyone else. The job that does this is a rewarding one, in which a variety of skills is used to help other people achieve their goals. The job that does this is a personal trainer. Pursuing a career as a personal trainer is an achievable option that comes with many benefits.
Adding exercises into one’s daily routines can change their whole lifestyle. Many people look at exercise as being something just for people who want to lose weight or to become muscle bound, but there are a great deal of benefits that can be received from exercising regularly. Of course gaining muscle and losing fat are the two most popular reasons that usually attract people to the gym, but they make up a small part of the potential benefits that can be achieved with exercise. There are several ways in which I have benefited in my life from exercising regularly, besides just making me bigger and stronger. It has made me become more organized, helped me make better decisions, and motivated me to take on new challenges in life.
It currently is also not one of my strong suits, but first I’d like to reflect on the history of my fitness activity or lack thereof. The extent of my fitness experience spans the activity issued during state-mandated school exercises. Generally, my personal fitness has not been a concern of mine. Appropriately, as a youth, I was much more round in my physical appearance. As such, my ratio of muscle to body fat was particularly low. The results of this lifestyle will invariably produce negative effects on one’s health, as it did with mine. Furthermore, this lowered state of fitness originated from a lack of goal setting and exercise in general. When attempting to maintain an exercise routine, certain necessary steps should be taken to ensure success. Consequently, exercising successfully requires implementation of continual small goals.The main reason for the lack of a fitness routine in my life came from a lack of fitness goals. Achieving a high level of functional fitness requires continual work. Because this work has never been an interest to me, I, unfortunately, have squandered the opportunity to set fitness goals for
