"Exit the bus” one of the men said in two different languages (Hebrew and English) placing two large dogs on each side. We all packed all of our essentials and left the bus. I got off the bus thinking that we arrived in Palestine, but the truth was, we still had to cross the borders and then take a completely different bus. I was exhausted, it was a very long trip from Canada all the way to Jordan and a two hour ride on a bus to cross the borders of Palestine. We had to give our Jordanian passports to them, however, they let my entire family pass through except for me. I was in a shock, “how am I supposed to go home all alone, I am only 10” I asked the man. He stared at me for about 5 seconds and said “ your Jordanian passport is expiring
in a month, you cannot enter Israel without it” he said with an accent while pushing me out of the way. I pulled out my Canadian passport from my pink bag and ran after him. “Excuse me sir” the words I constantly repeated while following him. He suddenly turned around, I handed my Canadian passport to him, he looked at it and handed back to me with a smirk and said “It’s too late” and left as if I don’t exist. After this situation, I had a better reason to hate them even more, it was my very first trip to Palestine, but they decided to send me back instead of letting me pass through the borders to spend the joyful amount of time with my family and friends. In addition to, I always have disliked them because they took over my country and changed the name that was overused in many centuries from “ Palestine” to “Israel”, however, “Palestine” still exists now.
One day it was ordered that all foreign Jews in Sighet be deported by German troops. They were told they had to wear yellow stars to identify themselves. Eliezers friends Moshe was also a foreign Jew, which meant he had to be deported. Eliezer did not see his friend Moshe for months. When he finally saw him, Moshe was weeping. Eliezer asked him what was wrong. Moshe told him he was in a concentration camp. He said they threw him in a pit and shot his leg, but he managed to escape to worn him to flee for his life. Eliezer didn't listen to him anyway.
Research Question: Assess the validity of Christopher Columbus’s claim of discovering the new world prior to 1492 against the evidence that suggest that there was a West African presence prior to Christopher Columbus.
It is thought by many that Christopher Columbus was a skilled sailor on a mission of greed. Many think that he in fact did it all for the money, honor and the status that comes with an explorer, but this is not the case entirely. Columbus was an adventurer and was enthused by the thrill of the quest of the unknown. “Columbus had a firm religious faith and a scientific curiosity, a zest for life, the felling for beauty and the striving for novelty that we associate with the advancement of learning”. He had heard of the legendary Atlantic voyages and sailors reports of land to the west of Madeira and the Azores. He believed that Japan was about 4,800 km to the west of Portugal. In 1484, Columbus wanted support for an exploratory voyage from King John II of Portugal, but he was refused. In 1485, Columbus took his son Diego and went to Spain to get some help.
Once upon a time, there was a peaceful and resourceful land inhabited by a people called the Arawaks. In these lands were gold, food, and more importantly, tranquility. Although the Arawaks dressed stark naked, they wore gold earrings. They lived on agriculture and livestock. These people lived in the Bahamas Island and behaved very similar to the Indians on the mainland-America. These people could rightly be called Native Americans/Indians. However primitive these people were, they were very organized.
As educators it is important that we analyze the materials that we use in our classrooms to provide our students with anti-bias and anti-stereotype curricula. Analyzing our materials so that they are anti-bias and anti-stereotype provides our students with factual historical accounts and teaches our students to see things from multiple perspectives. As a result of this, our students will view the world in a different way, as well as think critically about things. One historical account that is often portrayed from one perspective is Christopher Columbus’ “discovery” of the new world.
Everyone knows the saying Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. However, there is a lot more to Christopher Columbus than what everyone was taught in elementary school through high school. Columbus is thought to be a hero, but just being classified as a hero is a fallacy. Several works including Christopher Columbus and the Enterprise of the Indies and The Lies my Teacher Told Me have been published about the real Christopher Columbus and his legacy.
Christopher Columbus and his goalsCertainly, Columbus was a devout Catholic. He lived during the period of the great Spanish Inquisition, which led to the defeat of the Jews and Muslims. Perhaps he wanted to continue the Spanish legacy and spread the faith toward the west. However, personal ambitions may have also sparked Columbus's interest in finding a water route to the Indies. He asks for gold many times from the natives and searches all the islands in hopes of discovering more. He views the natives as a source of economical benefit, hoping to employ them for practical purposes. Even though there are not any indications of immense amounts of gold and spices in the New World, Columbus continues to ask for more Spanish support in order to pursue his desire for fame. Throughout his logbook, Columbus brings to light another reason for his exploration. He mentions his divine purpose as his right to the New World. He thinks that God has chosen him to discover and cultivate this new found land. Columbus has chosen to include both his God given right and his own intentions in his journals, but he uses his divine purpose to justify his desire for wealth, glory, and manipulation of the Indians. He has in essence covered his selfishness with a holy sentiment prevalent among many contemporaries of his time, thus creating a pure self-image for himself.
From trying to sail west to land up in Asia, to forming a colony in Haiti, Christopher was a determined explorer lead four journeys to what he thought was Asia, but he was really landing up in the Americas. Never the less, Columbus’s navigational prowess helped him navigate the seas safely.
The Journal of Christopher Columbus, was the first voyage and most positive of encounters with the people of the new world the Americas. After leaving from the city of Granada on the 12th of May, 1492 sailing west with three sea vessels. On Thursday the 11th of October after encountering the heaviest seas during the voyage, they began to notice parselas and a green rush near the base of the vessels. In that afternoon the Pinta crew saw “a cane and a log; they also picked up a stick which appeared to have been carved with an iron tool” reviving their hope in the admiral. After sailing for five long discouraging months early the following morning in the distance they found themselves upon the small island of Lucayos. The
After I reading the chapter one about the Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress, and the chapter 2 entitled, “1493: The True Importance of Christopher Columbus,” from the book I lies My Teacher Told Me, I thought that why they celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus was not an honest person. Again, I was surprised when I read a paragraph about Columbus give impossible task to Indian and if they cannot do task they killed them and cut off their hand and bled to death. In two year, almost 250000 Indians are death by murder, suicide or by mutilation. When I saw the pictures of Native American, first words that came in my mind was they are uneducated. Moreover, about
While I have read and understand your requests, I find myself unable to grant them. I have read accounts of the actions of both your men and yourself in the isles of the Western Indies, and am utterly completely disgusted by them. You have been savaging the people of these islands, and have disgusted me and the entirety of my kingdoms. You dismiss these meek and innocent people as ignorant savages, but it is you that is the savage. I have read of the treatment of pearl divers and miners, forced to work in brutal conditions day and night, scarcely fed and in constant pain. I have read of your slave ships, of those which you toss out the Indians that you can not keep, leaving them to die in the waves. I have read of your
I believe Christopher Columbus was not not a terrific sailor and explore. He explored but he didn't really know what he was exploring. He thought he was in India but he was really in the Dominican Republic.
Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the second Monday of October every year, is a federal holiday celebrating when Columbus arrived in the Americas on October 12, 1492. This year, Columbus day falls on October 10. For some people, it seems rather shocking that this is still a holiday. The reasons there is questioning about this being a Federal Holiday is because of Columbus’ questionable character traits, negative impacts on society, introduction of encomienda into modern day, and the fact that Columbus didn’t really discover America; he just brought it to light for the Europeans. For these reasons, Columbus is not a person worthy of a Federal Holiday and that, if there should be a holiday to replace it, we should have an Indigenous People’s
The information provided within this paper will reflect my experience within a sixth-grade only school on the north side of Columbus and the community around. My mentor teacher has worked within the district for 27 years and at this building for 2 years. He described the student population of that school as an even split it low SES and middle SES students. The school is settled within a plethora of single family homes valued on average $150k or more. The students that walk to school come from these homes. Majority of the bussed students come from local apartments or other multi-family dwellings. When discussing the racial demographics, my mentor believed about 75% of the school was black, about 10% Latino/Hispanic, 10% white and 5% other. When
History, like others courses, teaches in school, is a scientific branch of learning that is interested in comprehending the past of humanity and human civilizations and seeks to reconstitute it. Being a science, history has its objective, methods, and plays an important function in human civilizations. We know about history through the written documents or textbooks. We study history to learn and to analyze events, individual exploits, and civilization of the past. This process takes into account the time and the space because the examination of a historical object requires placing it in time and in a given space.
