When I was a little kid I would go onto my mom’s computer and I type “ESPN” into the search engine. NBA would pop on the top on the screen and I would click it. NBA is my favorite sport to watch. I would look at the teams that were scheduled to play that night. The thing that always interested me is the over-under of the game and the percent chance of which team that would win the game. The one thing that always confused me was who in the world can the calculate something like that. I always tried asking my dad about it, but it was always too complicated for me to understand. Nothing really in grade school math further explained my yearning for an answer to how people calculate a team’s chances of winning. My first two years of high
school did not cover this subject neither. I was growing impatient. My interest for stats and percentages all started when I was in second grade. I would used to watch SportsCenter every morning before school, while I ate breakfast. They would present crazy stats for players like “The oldest player to have fifteen assists and zero turnovers” or “third player ever to hit three homeruns on his birthday”. I would always find satisfaction in stuff like that. This encouraged me to go online and find what cool status I could come up with by just looking at athletes stats from current and previous years. I would also check the daily leaders in points, assists, and rebounds for basketball if it was that season or I would check to see who was leading the league in home runs and runs batted in if it was during baseball season and I would also check to see who was leading the NFL in passing touchdowns, passing yards, and rushing touchdowns. This was all part of my daily routine. The one thing though I never looked at was like shooting percentage, batting averages and teams win percentages. I always thought those were pointless numbers.
For the 2017-2018, Mark Cuban’s NBA team currently has a record of (19-45), without question one of the worst in the league this year. In the ‘inverse analytics,’ the Mavericks coaching staff is given data on what lineups will not be successful as a means to lose games and improve their chances in the draft lottery to receive a high pick (Koyette, 2018). It has been described as “player development,” in which the younger less-developed players receive more playing time than veteran players.
This section includes the actual statistical calculations. It shows the calculations of how each statistical variable affected winning percentage individually and how in combinations the same statistical variables affected winning percentage.
In the last ten years many young and talented high school basketball players have chosen to enter the NBA draft. These 17 and 18 year olds decide to skip college, and instead they choose to take a big risk and enter the NBA, hoping to become stars and earn millions of dollars. In many cases, these youngsters’ careers are a failure because they don’t turn out as talented as they thought to be. They end up spending only a few seasons in the NBA because they are not good enough to compete at that level. Many of them have to move on to doing other things, such as playing basketball overseas, doing everyday jobs, or going back to college to earn a degree.
Since its creation in 1893, the sport of basketball has been one of the most popular sports in the United States. One wouldn’t have to search long to find a basketball court and a pickup game in most American cities. Many people around the world look up to the stars of the National Basketball Association as role models. Despite the vast popularity of basketball, there is only one major league in America: The National Basketball Association, to be referred to in this work as the NBA.
One aspect that draws millions of people’s attention to the NCAA tournament each year is trying to predict the outcome of the event through the making of a bracket. Groups of people all over the country create pools and bet on who has filled out the most accurate bracket. Whether it is a pool at work, a high school basketball team, or just a group of friends everyone gets involved and competes to have the best bracket. This creates a fun and attractive experience that people want to get involved with, drawing viewers from all over the country. Also, fans are not only restricted to one bracket each year. They can fill out as many brackets and join as many pools or competitions as possible. They could have one for a pool at work, another with friends at school, and a third with their family for bragging rights only. The fun doesn’t end there though. Fans can also join bracket competiti...
“If at first you don’t succeed try , try again.” At the age of six I was starting to play football. The game was a hard hitting running and commitment. I was six years old at the time now I’m fourteen a freshman in high school a lot has changed.
It 's the day before my last high school varsity basketball game as a senior… Wow four years went by this fast who would have imagined this day would have came. All day I was thinking about the season ending. This game meant everything to me, it wasn 't any ordinary game. It 's a section game! Win or go home.. With it being my last high school game I wanted to close the chapter knowing I gave it my all. Practice was probably the most intense it 's ever been for me. Emotions were flaring and we were all on the grind.
It was the most competitive three days of my life, basketball tryouts. This is the first time my friends and I were trying out for a school team, we were all hyped for basketball season. I entered the tryout excited and consequently energetic. Adrenaline was pulsing through all the players bodies, there were 6 foot tall 8th graders with years of experience competing against 6th graders who have never touched a basketball before for the same spots. I was in between, I was a 6th grader that had experience along with some skill. That was also my downfall, I went in overconfident and consequently cocky. I wasn’t planning on getting cut, I walked into the tryout overwrought, nothing could stop me from being on the team.
Since 1939, March Madness has brought fans and teams alike to tears of disbelief and tears of joy. Every year after the regular season, 64 lucky teams are selected out of 347 teams to participate in the March Madness tournament. They all have one goal and that is to win six games consecutively and win to the National Championship. The fans and players both are on the edge of their sets cheering and hoping for their team to come out victorious. After March Madness and all the thrilling upsets and classic games, comes the NBA Playoffs in May. The dragged out and dull NBA playoffs are repeats of matchups and players every year and lack diversity. People usually show more passion and eagerness for the March Madness Tournament. Basketball is a big part of my life, one year ago in tournament final game two of our best players were hurt and the team was relying on me. With the time winding down on the clock we were down 8 points. Somehow I got our deficit down to two points with 30 seconds left, after an intense defensive stop 10 seconds remained on the clock; our coach called a timeout. A play was drawn up for me to take the shot. Mitchell inbounded the ball to me as I came off of a screen, I had an some-what wide open shot, I took the shot, you could hear the crowd go silent as the ball left my hand and headed towards the basketball. It felt like everything was going slow motion, the ball was getting closer and closer to the hoop and I…….missed it. The buzzer sounded

The spectating of sports is a significant aspect of America’s culture and pastime. For instance, the NFL now practically owns a day of the week during football season. The playoff games of baseball, basketball, and football can cause us to stay awake until two in the morning watching the final minutes of each game. We love watching sports, but we love betting on sports even more. Companies, like Fanduel and Draftkings, have sprouted from within our love of betting and competition. They have established well known daily games, which cost only a few dollars and allows sports fans to challenge themselves in predicting the outcomes of games. The fan who has the closest predictions wins cash prizes. They offer hundreds of games for dozens of different sports. The probability of someone winning these chance games is small, but the general idea that they could win is enough motivation for them to play. Although each game costs only a few dollars, most sports fans do not only play one, so the cumulative price can cost fans hundreds annually. Even though this involves sports, is it
Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. There were never any practices, it was just one or two unorganized games per week. I never took
The point of this exploration is to delve into the math behind these sports, and see what formulas occur during a game. I chose this topic, because I love sports and play them multiple times a month. After discovering that there is arithmetical aspects of these sports I was fascinated and wanted to explore them.
It was just dusk and woke up because something was on my mind. The second day of a basketball tournament was on my mind. I only got about five hours of sleep from having millions of butterflies in my stomach. We had to be at the tournament and warming up by seven. We were the third seed with Lin mar black and Xavier Xtreme. On the way to there, my superstition is listen to my pump up playlist and eat a banana with a cliff bar. I always show up early because I take longer to warm up than most people. When my team showed up I was just finishing my own daily routine when the other team walks in too. When my team was ready to face the enemy we always have like a starting squad huddle and get pumped. This huddle was more than pump up; it was us
