Since 1939, March Madness has brought fans and teams alike to tears of disbelief and tears of joy. Every year after the regular season, 64 lucky teams are selected out of 347 teams to participate in the March Madness tournament. They all have one goal and that is to win six games consecutively and win to the National Championship. The fans and players both are on the edge of their sets cheering and hoping for their team to come out victorious. After March Madness and all the thrilling upsets and classic games, comes the NBA Playoffs in May. The dragged out and dull NBA playoffs are repeats of matchups and players every year and lack diversity. People usually show more passion and eagerness for the March Madness Tournament. One feature that makes the format better is the larger number of teams. Now why there are many more college teams than NBA teams, the NBA could still incorporate more teams than they do. People over the years have shown much more interest in the college playoff system. . In the NCAA March Madness finals last year the average attendance during the final four was 71.875 people. In the NBA Finals last year the average attendance during the Finals Series was 20,079 people. Even though the Final Four had a bigger venue, you can clearly see the huge difference in the attendance. The fans of the NBA teams who don’t get a shot at the playoffs are losing interest and the NCAA does a good job of keep their fans interested. The NCAA tournament has a 64-team bracket where the matchups only play one game against one another. This allows for a more exciting and unpredictable outcome because smaller schools might be able to pull off that one miracle upset, but in the NBA playoffs if the underdog wins they still have to win 3 more games. The players show more loyalty and respect to their colleges because it will always be a part of them. The players show such loyalty because they only go to one college, but sometimes play for multiple NBA teams. For example, Shaq played at LSU for three straight years before entering the NBA. In the NBA Shaq played for six different teams over a span of 19 years. LSU will always be a part of Shaq because it is the only college team he played for. Shaq’s NBA teams will always mean something, but they’ll never be as influential as his time developing as a player as LSU was. The players play harder and show more effort in their playoff system because of many reasons. The main reason is because of no payments. NBA players made in average of $4.9 million dollars. If you’re making money no matter how you perform or if you’re just sitting on the bench, then there’s no point of showing effort. In college all the kids are trying to prove themselves to be drafted into the NBA. The college players show their effort and hustle all year long, while NBA players show lackadaisical determinations to win and try their best. Each March, there arises some kind of brouhaha across the country or at least within the four walls of colleges across the United States. The cause is the highly regarded single-elimination tournament officially known as the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Championship, and colloquially as the March Madness. As described by Chris Suellentrop on the 6th Floor Blogs of the “New York Times” magazine, this “is the greatest sporting event of the year, and in particular, the tournament’s first weekend serves up the most entertaining four days in sports.” (Suellentrop 2011)
Play style, rules differences, and passion for the game are on field differences between college football, and the NFL. There are also many off field differences, including money. Most general things about the game, are still the same though. Due to the differences between college football and the NFL, college football is more enjoyable to watch as a fan.

When a regular student chooses a college he will apply, pay the app. Fee, and then hope his credentials are good enough. Viewers are awed by the sheer amount of games played and the only three weeks they are played in. They are mesmerized trying to fill out the perfect bracket and possible win huge prizes and bragging rights over their friends. They are awestruck by enormous upsets and rally behind underdog teams. Many people may argue that the NCAA tournament and March Madness is just another sporting event, but in reality it is a widely popular competition that is viewed by millions of fans and even non-sport viewers year after year.
College sports teams will only put the best athletes in the games, because at that level, winning is the number one goal. Second, Dave Heun, a columnist and editor for Source Media, writes, “In no other facet of life are we guaranteed 'playing time' just because we have been part of a program”..” Giving all players equal game time is unrealistic and not present in college and professional sports, as playing time is earned based on skill and work ethic in practice. Not all college athletes are given time on the field or court, so giving equal time to players in high school will put false hope and expectations in athletes’ minds. College basketball has gone from amateur competition to multi-million dollar tournaments and will continue to get larger and larger. The student-athlete is no longer a student and has become more and more of an athlete. Admissions are loosened and deals are made in order to get the best basketball players in the land. Athletes who are not students are criticized when they leave for the pros even though they are probably doing the right thing by not perpetuating the myth of academics and athletics. College basketball has become a multi-million dollar industry whether schools will admit it or not and the student athlete is the one getting played.

Well right now it is like that with college football playoff system. During the BCS era they had one game between the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams and the winner would play the number 1 ranked team for the national championship. All the brad new FBS does is add one more game therefore only adding one more team, so instead of just adding one more team to the mix, this is still unfair. What they should add 5 teams to the 3 team mix to make the system fair. The recently removed BCS only allowed the top 3 teams to compete for a national championship but the new FBS is allowing 4 however, this is still a problem. These really affect small schools because “Undefeated mid-major schools and one-loss teams from major conferences still likely to miss the playoffs” (Douglas). The national championship is the championship of all college sports in every sport, and every year every college team in and a few out of the nation tries to compete for the national title. However some undefeated schools due to “easy schedules” do not get the same chance as one or two loss big schools that have slightly tougher schedules. In the NCAA basketball tournament “March Madness” over 60 teams get to play and compete for the national championship and they play multiple games every day so there should be no reason for football to not be able to have at least 8 teams instead of just 4. Fans have such a love for college football, completely different from NFL but paying athletes just like professional ones would change that different environment for both players and fans completely. Fans love the idea that they are watching these young men play with passion and love for the game. University alumni like to see these players have the same loyalty to the schools that they had when they attended.
