The nature disaster that can remember was an ice storm in January 1997. I just had my son one week before the ice storm. The ice storm lasted for about a week. There was ice all over the power line which cause lights to be out all over the city. The lights were off at my home for a week and we had a gas heater in our restroom. The heater kept one room in our home warm as if the central unit was working. I was overwhelmed because I just had a new born son with no heat or hot water for a week. I would place my son can milk on the bathroom counter to keep it at room temperature.
One source commented “They were blindfolded with ice and didn’t flush” (Heynen 1). Helpless animals outside in the freezing rain and temperatures, there aren’t many people who would go out and help them. The Story “What Happened during the Ice Storm” by Jim Heynen is about just that, a group of boys go out in the “Icy rain. Their breath came out in slow puffs of steam” (Heynen 1), and all just to help a group of pheasants who could not help themselves. After carefully analyzing the story, the reader understands both the theme, and what the author says about human nature through the actions of the boys and the diction.
January 12, 1888, a blizzard covered the northwest part of North America that claimed many lives. This blizzard was considered to be the worst blizzard of all time, and was dubbed the “the Schoolchildren’s Blizzard”, for claiming the lives of so many school children on their way home. The death toll of this murderous blizzard rose, because of lack of preparation and being uninformed. During this time, many farmers and families were unprepared to survive a blizzard of this magnitude, by the lack of clothing they wore. Forecasters were not as accurate enough to inform people on the weather conditions. Also, shelter was a major factor in protecting themselves from the winter storms, but the shelter was not stable
In the story,”What Happened During the Ice Storm,” the author, Jim Heynen, utilizes imagery to develop the theme of: be a leader of kindness, not a follower of violence. “Tree branches glistened like glass. Then broke like glass.” shows the contrast between the beauty that the cold rains brought, as well as the violence that came with it. This compares to, “went ice-skating…with clubs to harvest the "pheasants…” because both begin with an innocence, and end with contrasting violence. “...looking at each other, each expecting the other to do something. To pounce on a pheasant, or to yell Bang!” Exhibits how the boys were just waiting to follow whoever acted first, whether in violence or compassion, by describing their actions of uncertainty.

However, the same disaster can also bring some long-term problems too. A long-term problem cause by a flood could be needing to get out of debt because paying for somewhere to stay until repairs are done costs money, then paying for the repairs such as water damage and damaged furniture also costs money. The blizzard of 1888 was unanticipated by the meteorologists, leaving the migrants who had ventured out to the midwest, without any precise warnings or means of communication to notify them of severe weather, let alone a blizzard that would come to be known as the Great Blizzard of 1888. That day, many school children walked to school without their cold-weather wear, because the temperature was warm enough for them to do so. Some children were released from their schoolhouses destined for their homes before the blizzard began its reign, not knowing the trepidation they would face. This problem was not just for the children, but for others who had begun their day, not knowing that a petrifying blizzard would wreck havoc on their lives. David Laskin’s The Children’s Blizzard illustrates a tragedy. A tragedy could be an event that is caused by a terrible situation that results in utter chaos and destruction. According to Merriam-Webster, a tragedy is a very sad, unfortunate, or upsetting
I tried to start the car but it wouldn’t work. I turned my head again
“Ring, click.” You heard that right, that was the sound of sadness. That alarm means only one thing it is Monday! The first day of the week which means I have five days of school sigh, but wait what is that outside? I can barely see, but I can tell it’s white outside, wait what is that? It's snowing! “We are going to have a snow day!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs as I ran through my house!
As a teen, it 's hard to remember exact moments when looking back at baby pictures. We were babies, we can’t possibly remember what went on when we were too young to comprehend language or the art of mobility. Although we can 't remember exactly, someone does. Whether it be our parents, the photographer, or background characters from the photo, someone can recall that exact moment. The older you get, the more eager relatives are to share stories about you from your childhood, some broadcasted to the world making sport of you, and others in the quiet of your own home, attached to heartbreaking memories. Even though you may not be able to remember them, they are your experiences, your life story, things you should be able
Natural Disasters can occur anywhere at anytime. Some are more predictable than others, but they all bring hardship to everyone’s life. Regardless of what kind of disaster occurs, bottom line, everyone needs to be prepared mentally and physically to deal with the aftermath. Education is the first step to prepare you to deal with any major disaster. Three of the major disasters that can potentially disrupt normal day to day operations in our lives, are Hurricanes, Tsunamis and Tornadoes.
The English writer John Ruskin once said “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather,” (John Ruskin Quotes - Page 4) but I’m sure there are many who disagree with him. Nature’s beauty is a gift from God, but occasionally nature is not so aesthetically pleasing. Natural disasters occur often around the world destroying the lives of many on a regular basis. An example could be the recent flood victims of Australia or even last year’s earthquake in Haiti. There are several types of natural disasters¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬- from earthquakes to hurricanes and floods; they often strike without warning and leave a path of destruction and despair in their path.
