The Bible teaches that we should treat others how we would want to be treated; this past summer showed me how this applies to life in my church’s Amazing Race Scavenger Hunt. The hunt took place in a little town called Charlevoix located right on Lake Michigan. Around 20 adults from my church were all staying together in an enormous house near my family’s condo. A few of the leaders, one of which was my mother, had devised the race as a team building exercise. We would complete challenges at different locations in town. There were to be split up into three teams: Red, Blue, and Green. The day before the race we drew colors to see what team we would get; I got Blue. There were six people per team, plus a non-partial team leader to keep track of points and give us the supplies we would need in fulfilling each objective. Just from that I was told, I knew that …show more content…
this day was going to be the best day of my summer. The morning of the race, the sun was sparkling through the trees as I crossed the quiet street to the big house. The the scorching summer sun had only begun to melt away the cool evening air when I walked through the door of the living room where the teams were to meet. Like an airport on the last day of vacation, the room was crowded and noisy with people talking and finishing breakfast while sitting in small groups.
The smell of scrambled eggs and hash browns had not yet left the room as I weaved my way through people and chairs leftover from that morning’s small worship service. Finally, I made my way to the hall where one of my teammates was looking for the rest of our group. We searched around for a bit until we finally found our team leader calling annoyedly, “Blue Team! Blue Team right here!” When all the groups had been gathered and seated, the three team leaders stood at the front of the room and explained what we were to do that day. To start, our leader would give us a clue that would lead us to the location of the first challenge and instruct us on what to do. After completing the objective, we would receive the next clue, and continue on until the race would finish where we started. When the leaders finished talking, a prayer was said, and we received our first clue. The clue said that the challenge was to commence at Depot Beach, and we were to construct a float for a team member to
swim on to a buoy and back. After giving my teammates instructions on how to get there, I ran to the car and jumped in the back seat, eager to begin the day and win! After the others got in the car at a much slower pace, we were off! As the first ones to the beach, I was hopeful that the other teams might never show up, and we were the only ones who figured out the location. We began building the raft out of the noodles and rope we were given, but not before long, I was dismayed that the other teams showed up and began building. Frustrated, I turned to try and help build, but the raft only required two or three people. Finally, the raft was built, and the one chosen to swim was paddling out. The cheers of the three teams echoed over the water, each rooting their swimmer to victory. After a few minutes of desperate paddling, the first swimmer back was from Green team, followed by my team member a few yards behind. When everyone was back on dry land and ready to go, we received our next clue. The clue said for us to go to Michigan Beach and either build a sandcastle or find a Petosky stone. As we drove over, we discussed on which task we should do. As the one who lived there, and had the most experience with Petosky stones, I stated that finding the stone would probably take longer. When we reached the beach, the leader gave us some sand toys and the requirements for the sand castle. As I began digging for the castle’s moat, lo and behold, I spotted a tiny petosky stone was mixed in with the other pebbles, like a small child at a rock concert. I exclaimed, “I found a Petosky stone!” and the others rushed over. As they oohed and aahed over the little rock, I notice proudly that Red and Green had only just showed up and hadn't even begun to start. After giving our unneeded sand toys to a few nearby children, we headed to a nearby snack bar where our leader informed us we were to have lunch and perform a few activities. At the snack bar were a few empty picnic tables outside waiting for us. As we stood in line to order, our leader told us that while we were taking the break, we had to get a video of a stranger singing with us. We argued on which song to sing, and finally decided on America the Beautiful. After we ordered, I asked the waitress if she would sing the song with us. She looked surprised, but agreed to. After a few false starts, we sang. Our music didn't sound amazing, and the words were not all correct, but we sang with laughter and joy. When we finished our singing, we received our food and sat at one of the picnic tables. The air smelled of sunscreen and fresh homemade french fries right out of the oven and burning my tongue. I could feel a light breeze fighting the burning sun, and the sticky picnic table under my arms. The noise of people at the beach and one of the other teams singing their song was faint as my teammates discussed heath foods and what our next activity might be. After lunch, we received the last clue; go to Ferry Beach and launch water balloons at a target. When we arrived, once again, we were the first ones there. Unfortunately, shooting water balloons was not as easy as it looked, and my team lost our lead trying to figure out how to shoot. Red team ended up winning because they were the only ones who got remotely close to the target, and everyone else ran out of balloons. After cleaning up the balloon scraps, our group leader instructed us to travel back to where we started so we could find out who won. One short car trip later, we were all seated in the living room where it all began. The three team leaders stood at the front of the room as the teams gathered around them, whispering with anticipation. When all had calmed down, one of the leaders stood and declared, “In my hand is the envelope containing the color of the winning team.” The leader slowly and painstakingly opened the envelope as we all leaned forward on the edges of our seats with excitement. Finally, she got out the paper and said, “Green Team wins!” A cheer erupted from where Green was sitting and they all began jumping and celebrating. I watched in disappointment as the judges gave them their prizes; baseball caps. My team should have won! Didn't we work the hardest?! Weren't we the best? After everyone had calmed down, the leaders explained why Green had won. They were the only ones who stayed behind to help clean up after each activity, and gave help when the other teams needed it. Although they didn't win many of the games, they showed the most sportsmanship. Though I was still a bit upset that my team lost, I was also glad Green had won. I realized that a true winner isn't defined by how well they complete the race, but how they treat the others around them.
I have always loved sports and the competitiveness that comes along with them. In so doing, I have decided to eventually become either a high school or college coach at some point in my life. Subsequently, I decided to interview the Vilonia High School Cross Country Coach, Coach Sisson. As I walked into her office, I instantly noticed all of the trophies and team photos from all of the past years of coaching. She is also the school nurse so her office has first aid equipment intermingled into the trophies and team pictures. While I set up my notes and questions for the interview on one of the desks in her office, she was finishing up a diagnosis of one of the high school students who felt sick. After her patient left, I quickly started the interview in order to waste no time. She began with how she got involved in coaching. The Vilonia School District expressed their interest to her as being the next cross country coach several years ago. She was widely known for her passion for running and she gratefully accepted the position and has been a coach for numerous years now.
One day, Jesus led an immense crowd along with His twelve disciples up a mountainside to teach Christian ethics for believers and non believers. His teachings, or His sermon, are appropriately named the Sermon on the Mount. While the multitude of people stood in front, Matthew and the other disciples stood beside Jesus on the mountainside. In Matthew chapters 5-7, Matthew documented Jesus’ teachings that encapsulate His guidance about living a life that is dedicated to God and abundant in grace, love, and discernment. However, the life that is pleasing to God must also be free from hypocrisy. In Matthew 7:1-6, Jesus specifically speaks about the topic of those who feel superiority over others in terms of condemning, and ultimately judging,
I am now officially in my Senior year of Cross Country , and am close to the end of my season. My first race of this year though was a big accomplishment for me, because I hadn`t been able to run. When I ran that race though it made me just so happy I was able to finish it, I was`nt happy with the time, but there is always time for improvement. I was glad to be racing again and being apart of the team again. I believe that my injuries were a barrier in my way, but they did not stop my sports career.
Dr. Richards develops the claim about the importance of loving your neighbor by first writing about his personal anecdote. He talks about how he began to understand the patterns in the Bible, which was “God’s abiding concern for the poor,” and how God awaits us to be concerned about the poor. By stating those patterns, the author emphasizes the importance of caring for the poor. Then, he inserts evidences to support his claim about God’s concern using some Bible verses such as Matthew 22:34-40 and Luke 10:30-35; the author uses these two verses to explain how “love your neighbor as yourself” is
In today’s society, Sunday mornings have become one of the most segregated days all over the world. This common issue is due to racism. Racism is a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities, and that racial differences produce an inherit superiority of a particular race. (Meriam…2014) One of the common places that racism is portrayed is in church. The most common racial issue is “the black church versus the white church.” Each group, whether they be black or white, tends to stay to their own racial group due to the lack of social acceptance based on the color of their skin.
... the Biblical rule that states, “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” Instead, we continually show that there should be no tolerance or understanding of any wrongdoing committed against us.
The soul of the world to me is my Religion, it has had an influence on my life for as long as I can remember. I was just a little preschooler when I was introduced to my faith, my parents sent me to a church camp after school for an hour or so every day. I had never had any real connections like many of the pastors claimed but I knew as long as I believed that good would come. For many years it didn't, yet I remained faithful. I always believed that if I remained faithful that nothing could ever hurt me, still with all my faith there were days where I questioned my belief. I wondered how any of this could actually be possible, if there was really a big man up in the sky watching me then why don't I ever see him. But as I grew older I learned
As a child in middle school, I started thrusting myself in my academic career. I joined Science Olympiad, in which students compete in different sciences. I competed in events such as astronomy or anatomy and from this point on the passion for science grew. When I entered high school, I continued my career with Science Olympiad, but decided I needed to broaden my perspective. There had to be more than science olympiad, a whole new field that would let me practice and see science working at one of it's best.
The moment of truth was upon me. The official times, this includes whom qualified for finals, for the 400m relay had been posted. My eyes scanned the page for the bold letters that spell ANDERSON. As I ran my finger across the page to where the times were posted, my ears began to shut out all outside noises, leaving me alone with the thump of my heart and the inhale and exhale of my lungs. Both began to increase in speed as my eyes narrowed in on the time.
Attending the Santa Fe volleyball tournament, with the varsity team, the tournament would last three days straight. Means we would miss school, but coach would tell everyone to go there classes to get their assignments before, we leave to Santa Fe. As I found out one of the days during the tournament, I would miss my niece's 2nd birthday party.
Tyronne Gross and Otis Amey, two former NFL players, quickly climbed up the stairs as they buzzed with anticipation, looking forward to how many students they would be able to reach out to during their sixty-minute sojourn at Center High School. As they opened the door of the classroom, exclamations of praise and excitement greeted them. There were over eighty students gathered to hear the stories of these men and their journey through life as Christian athletes. As members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, they were closely associated with our school's Transformed Bible Club, which I organized. The room quickly grew quiet, so quiet a person could hear their neighbor breathing. We all sat quietly and listened to the message both men brought forth to us.
In the bible it says that we should treat each other as we would want
The skimpy maroon shorts and matching tank top did little to stop a cool October breeze from sapping heat from my body. The teams huddled against each other at the start line, waiting for the go. I stood motionless among my maroon pack as I got ready for my last 5K race for the school. I reminisced to when I found my passion for running. The journey from when I started running to this final race here. The failure I experienced during start of my running career, yet I decided to continue.
The day was overcast, which made the coaches and runners nervous. This was our final race of the season, and although there was regionals for the older, faster members of our team, this was the last time we would be competing. People were breaking off of the group at intervals, going to the races they had been signed up for. There were periods when there were only a few sitting in our section and others when there were many sitting with us. Although we were sitting there was a lot of energy, not only coming from us, but also from the other teams surrounding us. Everyone was screaming, cheering on the runners that were representing our school, and when they were anywhere near close to the first runner we were up on our feet, clapping and cheering them on.
Numerous amounts of people would come to receive bags of food and select some clothing if they needed some. Particularly during Christmas time, the children that would come would receive some books, toys, and a stuffed animal. At these service events, I had made three very important observations. My first observation was the gratefulness of those who came. The adults, especially those who had to wait for a long time because of the sheer numbers of people that came, remained patient and orderly. Some of us can’t even be patient when the drive thru at a fast food restaurant becomes a stalemate. These people could worry less about time. They were grateful for simply being able to receive some goods that could help provide for them and their family. As for the children, the toys that they received weren’t necessarily desirable in the perspective of a privileged child. However, these kids knew how much their parents sacrificed for them. They were appreciative for any of the toys they received. For fortunate kids, they can expect that their parents will buy them a gift for Christmas. Yet, others can only hope that their parents can get them one small gift. Thus, they cherish anything they receive, something that all of us should do. The second observation I made was that we made sure to evangelize those who were there. In Matthew 4:3, in response to the
