I have been on the court since I was seven years old. Basketball has been a driving force in my life. The spirit of the game, comradery of a team, and the perfection of a swish is a part of who I am. My first community based coach ‘s name was John Cochrane in a small township, Warminster, a suburb of Philadelphia . Through the fifteen or so games we played in rec, John modeled great technique, that everyone should play equally, and that team is stronger that its parts. I learned that skill development took a lot of work and that sometimes you just had to laugh! As my basketball career became more serious and a more competitive journey, I had the immense pleasure of meeting and working with a personal trainer name, Chris Harper. He partnered
up the development of skills with the pumping up of self-esteem. Coach Harper modeled that I had to work hard to see the benefits. I have to say that there were times that he made me cry (15 years old) but in hindsight, he was right. My first high school basketball game, Coach Harper was front and center cheering me on. He was in my corner and pushing me towards excellence. It was and still is the perfect combination for me. I look up to Coach Chris and Coach Cochrane and I am still in contact with them. This was a major force in my life and an inspiration. JMU will continuing my education in the field of sports which will allow me to pass the ball to another young gentleman or lady. I will have the skill set to motivate – powerful when it comes to the lives of others. I am ready to absorb the knowledge and training your institution can give me. I have a special interest to pass on the training and life incentives I have received to others. I can make a difference in the lives of youth, and I count the minutes until this can happen.
Basketball is a chart-topping sport that is loved by many fans. It’s been a hit since 1891 when it began, starting in Springfield, Massachusetts. It grew rapidly in popularity and spread around the world. Many people found it comforting to play, such as Pat Conroy. Pat Conroy was an outstanding basketball player, who was committed in going far with his teammates. Although he seemed superb, he had a troubled life growing up at his family home. His parents were abusive and uncaring towards him, therefore he used basketball as an alternative. In My Losing Season, Pat was able to obliterate the thought of his abusive parents. His comfort was playing basketball with a team he will never fail to remember. The outcomes Pat acquired were admirable,
Starting my freshman year at County High School, I played basketball and loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t be conceited enough to say I was good, but God did bless me with the talent to play. My life revolved around the sport of basketball; some would say I slept, ate, and breathed every part of it. I spent all my time training and practicing to make myself a more dedicated athlete. This dedication not only helped me as a player, but also molded me into the person I am today. It somehow helped to prepare me for what defeat I would face with back surgery in the future.
Sports specialization among young people is when a child or teenager trains for and competes in only one sport. They work extremely hard year-round in order to become well-rounded in every aspect of the game. They make sacrifices and put their health in jeopardy in order to become the ultimate participant in their sport. One of the many young athletes who is only participating in and focusing on one sport is fifteen-year-old OJ Mayo from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the young talented athlete who is predicted to be the next LeBron James in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This young athlete provides evidence of striving for perfection in this single sport when reviewing his daily schedule versus that of his siblings. He says, “The other kids go home and sleep. I come back to the gym” (Thompson, 2004). He is obviously putting forth a lot of effort in his sport to become successful at an early age.
...e you a great shooter. Although I suffered injuries in my past basketball career which earned me a basketball scholarship to play collegiate basketball, I am now more knowledgeable about my position. This knowledge has helped me reflect on myself and my experiences as a player transitioning to a coach. I believe it is important that I educate my players and teach them proper mechanics but also mental set. Acknowledge that the jump shot is more than a motion of physical ability and talent, it takes a great amount of thinking and implying the information you already know to what you learned. All coaches throughout the country regardless of their level should have knowledge of biomechanics and require there staff to also know the following information. This allows the opportunity for kids to learn the correct technique, prevent injuries, and transform them as a player.
This report enabled me to observe a very fine coach. I am honoured to have given the opportunity to observe Winchester public school boys’ senior basketball team coach Tom Liu during their basketball season. Coach Liu is knowledgeable about the sport he coaches and about the development of his athletes. His qualifications include NCCP level 1: volleyball, basketball, special Olympic (technical) and NCCP level 2 Theory. After observing several basketball practices and one basketball game, I’ve come to conclude coach Liu is a well respected and a good role model for his players. He provides challenging and enjoyable practice sessions. During the practices, he is able to communicate well with the athletes. He is constantly asking for the athletes’ suggestions on how to improve their strategy as a team and what the athletes feel they should work on. This allows the athletes to be involved and to develop their thinking habits. Coach Liu also provides good corrective instructions where he would pull the athlete aside and correct their mistakes either by a...
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
Basketball is a big part of my life, one year ago in tournament final game two of our best players were hurt and the team was relying on me. With the time winding down on the clock we were down 8 points. Somehow I got our deficit down to two points with 30 seconds left, after an intense defensive stop 10 seconds remained on the clock; our coach called a timeout. A play was drawn up for me to take the shot. Mitchell inbounded the ball to me as I came off of a screen, I had an some-what wide open shot, I took the shot, you could hear the crowd go silent as the ball left my hand and headed towards the basketball. It felt like everything was going slow motion, the ball was getting closer and closer to the hoop and I…….missed it. The buzzer sounded
Youth Coaches are essential to the world of sports. A coaches job is to lead a group of individuals to perform well and improve athletes both physically and mentally. A good coach promotes positive experiences for athletes, helps athletes foster love for the sport, mentor player, cultivate team chemistry, and make sure individual athletes represent the team in a good manner off the court. On the contrary, a bad coach makes athletes feel stressed, makes players dislike the game, increases chances of injury, and negatively impacts a player’s overall experience. To ensure participants receive a positive experience when participating in team sports, all coaches should receive complete training to ensure coaches can not only coach but understand the
Dunking a basketball is the holy grail for most basketball players to achieve, but most people are unable to do so. People give hundreds of excuses as for why they are unable to achieve the task of dunking such as their height, weight, or athletic ability. The only true way to achieve this goal is through hard work and training. Today was my chance to overcome my lack of height, and finally dunk a basketball. Standing at a proud 5 feet and 11 inches tall, most wouldn’t expect me to be able to do this feat. The coach just called the end of practice and to avoid conditioning, five players were asked to dunk. To everyone’s relief, the first four players easily sailed through the air and dunked, but it wasn’t a surprise since everyone was easily
As my deadline got closer and closer, my decision started to become clearer. After weeks of thinking, I had finally decided what I wanted to do. Basketball. It was my outlet, my way to get noticed in society. It would help me in the long run and have a great impact on me and my families lives. Of course, it would take a lot of hard work and dedication, but I was willing to accept the challenge and start a new career.

“People are remarkably bad at remembering long lists of goals. One may have learned this at a professional level when trying to get my high-performance coaching clients to stay on track; the longer their lists of to-dos and goals, the more overwhelmed and off-track they got. Clarity comes with simplicity.” As a child he always looked at being able to play or coach a sport at the professional level. For the reason of me just loving the game of Basketball. Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. There were never any practices, it was just one or two unorganized games per week. I never took
I had always heard playing basketball at a high school level was always the first step in order to become a professional. Though I only played once throughout high school I was still interested in how one could become a professional at basketball. For my senior project I chose to research about it and found out many interesting things I didn’t know about it. My knowledge for basketball grew even more.

Due to the vigorous exercises we did during the game, I was able to develop physical fitness and better shape. I understood what my body could do and had been able to maintain this ability. Therefore, establishing a lifelong habit for good health.
