Wait. Did I read that wrong? Quickly skimming the screen in front of me again, I was in awe. Mount Holyoke would teach me how to ride a horse. That is something I hadn’t seen while researching colleges during my junior year of high school. I was trying to find a college that was unique and quirky and once I stumbled upon Mount Holyoke, I knew I had found my home. As an only child, I adore the familial community that is instilled through traditions and activities at Mount Holyoke. My mind conjures up images of myself munching on baked goods every night while studying with my roommates, excitedly leaving presents outside some unsuspecting freshman’s dorm in my sophomore year or singing “Anti-Alma Mater” at the top of my lungs alongside
On the night of Saturday, February 1, 2014, I sat down with my grandfather, David Latta, to conduct an interview with him. He currently lives in Clarkston, Michigan, in the newly refurbished basement in my mother's house, along with my step-father, sister, and her son. One could say that my mother's household is quite the crowded nest, with four generation living under one roof. The perspective my grandfather obtains from living in such an atmosphere, is not only something I kept in mind while conducting this interview, but something that guided my questions.

Jim had a rough childhood. His mother and father had 11 children, six of which died at an early age. He had a very close relationship with his brother; they did everything together. They hunted, fished, played sports, and rode horses, and when pneumonia took the life of young Charles; Jim was heartbroken. Due to his death, Jim fell into a depression. He lost interest in athletics and his schooling, and constantly ran away from school. In 1898, his father, who was of European descent, sent him to Haskell Indian Junior College; a government managed boarding school located about 300 miles away from home in Lawrence, Kansas. This school took in young Native Americans and tried to “civilize” them. Jim was not permitted to speak his native Sac and Fox language and was forced to let go of his Indian traditions. Jim still held dear to his heritage despite these circumstances. It was here where he first wa...

The goal for most parents is to have a family that is united and happy together. The Clutters were happy, and who abided by their core values and faith. “A belief in God and the rituals surrounding that belief—church every Sunday, grace before meals, prayers before bed—were an important part of the Deweys' existence.” (133). Holcomb was revolved around faith, people believed this strengthened

Mt Washington in New Hampshire is the tallest mountain in Northeastern United States at 6,288 feet it is also one of the most dangerous ones. This is a mountain that since 1849 has caused the recorded deaths of around 150 people and the weather can change in seconds going from 70 degrees and clear skies to either thunderstorms, blizzards that cover the entire summit in snow and rime ice or hail with temperatures as low as -40 degrees and winds that have been recorded at 254 mph though wind gusts that high are results of rather extreme conditions. Any hiker must plan their trip up the mountain to the absolute smallest and minute detail, reservations must be made in advance and multiple routes off the mountain must be planned in case of either medical emergencies or extreme weather and a bunch of teenagers and our fathers were going to try our best and climb it without anyone increasing that 150 number.
I previously lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, a micro town compared to Sacramento and Elk Grove. I was the youngest and only girl in my family of three brothers. In the large Hmong community I lived in, I was sheltered in a defined perimeter of who I was, where I belonged, and my cultural expectations. From a young age, I’ve always been advised to honor my elders and to serve others first. It demonstrates selflessness that is highly
One year, I tagged along with my parents when they drove my brother and sister to Worldview Academy. Unfortunately, I forgot about the incident. That all changed, though, when I found myself enrolled at the same academy my siblings had previously attended. Since then, I have returned three times and this year served as my third and final “term”. After my enrollment, I concluded that I had discovered an anomaly, for I had never found myself more comfortable in a crowd of perfect strangers, nor so intrigued with academic subjects or experienced such an exhilarating time evangelizing as I had at the academy.

Planning a family celebration would prove rather difficult for me since the majority of the members of my family in my genogram have passed away. However, for the sake of this assignment I am going to pretend that is not the case. Family dynamics can have many sources of tension relating to many causes. According to my genogram and homogamy analysis, we are pretty similar, we are all Caucasian, and lower to upper middle class, however one big difference is our religious beliefs. The majority of our family tensions are not due to the analysis of our homogamy, but to social issues. Knowing my family dynamics, I can foresee three potential sources of tension that may occur at my family celebration, the difference in religious beliefs between family members, the shattered relationship between my mother and father, and my grandmothers mental disorder.
When I started at Gray Collegiate I knew I was home. They were rigorous, supportive, and traditional in their academic approach. I again became a good student who thrived in math classes. I was asked to become a peer tutor to help other students in math and science. I was thrilled to help other students who were struggling
After two straight days on a bus and ten weeks of training, I was still anxious to experience something that almost no one else would get to do in their lives. This was the first year I would be able to volunteer at a Native American reservation in Stockbridge, Wisconsin. This was a once in a lifetime chance to see what life was like inside a reservation, where not many outsiders were allowed into. As I first arrived, I could feel a significant difference between what their community was like, and what my own community back home was like. A certain disconnect was felt, and I couldn’t help but feel like a fish out of water. Inside the four walls of the brand new community center, I almost learned more in those few days than I’ve learned in most of my life.
Along with my change of interest and working for a company that helps pay for my school I was looking for a better college to attend and that had a program that would fit my needs. I soon became aware of Maryville University and the weekend and evening college program that they offered.
