I got into theatre my Junior year and It has changed my life. I am more outgoing and more likely to step out of my comfort zone. It has also helped me strengthen my time management skills. Theatre has also opened my up to a whole new group of people. I do community theatre in a town 30 minutes away from my hometown and I did not know anyone who did the community theatre and now I have strong friendships with all of them and I would never have gotten that without Theatre. My friend Chloe had been and plays for years and one day she approached me and asked if I would be an extra in a play she was in called Elf Jr.. After reviewing my life, I have decided my life defining moment was when my family and I moved to Texas from Oklahoma. I consider this move my life changing moment because it changed so many things in my life. This move set the stage for an entirely new life for me. Moving six hours away from the only home I knew certainly called for many changes.
The reason I find theatre to be so meaningful is because you get to encounter many different people that you would never actually think to associate with. Theatre is a place where everyone can be who they want to be, even if you are not performing on the stage. It doesn't matter if I have the talent to be on stage or organize props, I'm still a part of something.
My whole life I have never been the greatest at reading, but I have always tried to improve and push myself to do better. Reading and writing areis twoone of the needs of daily life. With that being said, you can conclude that I have always struggled. My problem was I always read too fast through the books or writing prompts, and I never remembered what I had read. But, with help I overcame my problems and started getting better at reading and writing.
I’ve been a theater person all my life. That’s where I grew up. My mom wrote, produced, and directed plays all over the city of New Orleans. I was accustomed to life on stage. I wanted to see what everybody else goes through. So I tried another aspect of theatre life. Let me just say, everybody in theatre loves it, but there are parts some have a mutual strong dislike for.
It has been around 14 hours since I have gotten back from the Freshmen Retreat, and I happy to be able to write about the success of the trip in all parts, regarding my personal goal, what I learned about my fellow advisory peers, and realizing a bit more about myself.
I was practicing the routine for my opening act, for the Broadway musical "The Sound of music." I am an actress playing the lead role of the main character Maria. My director Jane Marshall says," Barbara, you only have twenty minutes until your performance." My only chance to start a satisfying reputation for myself and please the audience. As I listened to those words come out of my directors mouth, that's when it dawned on me. I will only have one chance to do it right. I wouldn't want to cause any disarrays.
For the first six years of my life, I was a boy who savored going to school and seeing all of my friends. Then one day in first grade, during English class, that all changed thanks to a time were we had to read out loud. This day scared me for a while, and caused a fear in me that I wouldn’t let go of for about another eight years. Let me tell you first off, I was not at all the same person in first grade as I am today. For one thing, I was totally inconsiderate to any understanding of the reading system. I am writing about this event for the sole reason that it has changed the way I have live my life up to these recent years. Now that all of that is out of the way, I will continue with a story about a boy who overcame a reading and writing disability and turned it into motivation.
It seems unbelievable my oldest is a few days off being a decade old. I know every parent wonders “where has the time gone?” a multitude of times during their children’s childhoods, but as I realize my son is over halfway to 'adulthood' it seems like the time has flown by.
The time I accomplished something would have to be ever since I got a job myself, when I told my mom about the job she didn’t like the idea she wanted me to focus on school and helping her out at the house and taking care of my sisters. She wanted me to not worry and just worry about school but I see a lot of people my age working and getting money they earned by working and I got interested myself and for me it didn’t matter where I worked as long as I did.
When I was in the seventh grade I joined middle school show choir. I mostly joined because I loved to sing and my sister Hanah had just joined the show choir at the high school. I learned very early on how much I enjoyed show choir. I also learned that it was a lot of fun!
I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of how theater is more than a mere performance, but rather an artform with nuance and depth. My knowledge on theatrical styles has expanded and some of my favorites we have studied in class are Brechtian and Chinese theatre styles. I grew up participating in musical theatre, but never had the opportunity to truly learn the history and details of the craft. After studying RENT, I am inspired by the various possibilities for theater beyond acting, singing, and dancing. Theater can be used for activism or as a form of commemoration. Theater is relevant by communicating issues to the world. Theater is so much more than a dramatic presentation. The theater that I have come to appreciate the most are the performances that relay a greater purposeful message about society amidst the theatricals on
The further I have immersed myself in it, I found what truly interest and moves me to do theatre. That is the ability to spark individual change in people and their perspectives. Throughout, high school I kept finding myself doing social justice theatre projects never with intention of doing so. Subsequently, I discovered why theatre and art is so important to who am and why I have an interest in studying it. Art, but more specifically theatre indirectly forces us to deal with life’s truths about ourselves and others in a refreshing way that both entertains us but also often leaves us with something.
If I were to further my education in drama and theatre, then I would use my new abilities and education to educate the youth of the community. Barrow High School doesn’t have much of an appreciation for the theatre, since we struggled to have a sufficient amount of actors for our last play presented by our drama club. As I was growing up my family and I would usually go and see ballets and then as I grew older we stopped going. When you are in Elementary school you have music class and to make it fun your class usually had to put on a play/musical. When I was in 2nd grade maybe I remember I finally auditioned to be a reindeer in a Christmas musical that was taking place. I only got the role because the person who originally got it wasn’t sad enough and couldn’t sign because he was stage fright. As a theatre major, I have been able to learn many diverse topics and experiences. For instance, I was able to learn about different dialogue techniques and how to change your presence by changing your eye line or posture. As Willem Dafoe, a famous actor once said, “great Theatre is about challenging how we think and encouraging us to fantasize about a world we aspire to (Dafoe).” Theatre is a way to let out your expression and creativity.
