Growing up in Canada around a variety of remarkable cultures has helped me see the world in a different way. It gives me a more visual, mental, and emotional way being able to view the world. Being around the multicultural nature of this country has not only led me to learn more about other cultures but has helped me mold the culture I grew up around at home in my individual way. As I mature I have come to realize how growing up around many cultures and myparentsPakistani culture has helped “shaped the sight of my own particular eyes” from those of my parents and ancestors. Waking up for school would be the hardest part of my day as a young boy. A mixture of aromas would encompass the house and would be barging into my room. I would know …show more content…
One of these holidays was Eid. On Eid, we would gather with family, friends, and strangers who I had never met before but felt I already knew. Although Eid was a big part of my culture, it was also a big part of many cultures who shared the same religion of Islam. Growing up in Canada and going to the mosque on Eid I'd find myself greeting and meeting people from all around the world. Being around other cultures allowed me to become familiar with other people’s food, culture, and language, something I may not have been able to do had I grown up where my parents did. Another example of this is how celebrating the month of Ramadan in Canada; I would often find myself breaking my fast with friends at places that serve food that I had never seen at home or around gathering of people of the same culture. Growing up around other cultures also led me to accept and learn about other holidays as well such as Christmas. Being around varieties of cultures allows me to incorporate aspects from them into the holidays I celebrate that I was familiarized to by my …show more content…
An example of this is sports. In my house, the elders are very in tune with the sports cricket. Where there from almost everyone plays and learns the sport from a very young age. Since I grew up here in Canada, I have been able to develop a passion for sports that my parents were never familiar with growing up. From a young age, I was able to draw up a passion for the game of hockey. I would play, watch, and talk about hockey with my brother and friends and never learned anything about the sports my parents played. Another way growing up here helps me differ from my parents is the type of music I can listen to. Instead of listening to the same music my parents listen to I can listen to both English music and music from my parents country. Having the freedom of being able to choose certain things over others allows me to mold the way I view the world compared to my
If I were the prime minister of Canada, I would strive to accomplish and strengthen three major things. First, I would make sure that our educational system maintains strong and will make others succeed in life, second, I would make sure that everyone has equal and fair treatment in our society, and lastly, I would make sure every Canadian family can live happily by reducing tax.
In conclusion, this book gave me a whole new view on life and how we can interact better with different people. The book emphasized that culture is key to understanding people. Sometimes it is hard to connect with others because they are indicated as different but in due time we can adjust. Every culture has their own traditions when it comes to what they eat, what to wear, dating, various ceremonies, holidays and more. Reading this book helped me become more accepting of who I am and where I come from.
In 2011, more than 200 ethnic origins were reported in the National Household Survey, and 13 of those different ethnic origins had surpasses the one million mark in Canada, thus showing much diversity, and with diversity comes benefits. A variety of ethnic restaurants, grocery stores and clothing stores add more “life” and brightness to communities and areas, which attracts more residents and tourists. Thus, benefiting society by attracting new residents and tourists, which also adds to the stability and strength of the community. Moreover, as Canadian schools develop a cross cultural learning, citizens learn about diversity and the world, which benefits overall understanding and their education. Another benefit of multiculturalism, is that as more immigrants settle, communities benefit from cultural celebrations and more diverse cultural music, arts and food, thus benefiting society socially. Continuing onward, as diverse people migrate to Canada, they bring along a desire for goods from their homes and original location markets and such, thus benefiting society by contributing to a 0.2 per-cent rise in the value imports, along with a more interesting and varied market overall. Accordingly, a diverse population makes a community more and colourful and full of “life”, evidently benefiting
In the 1930's several educators called for programs of cultural diversity that encouraged ethnic and minority students to study their respective heritages. This is not a simple feat due to the fact that there is much diversity within individual cultures. A look at the 1991 Canadian census shows that the population has changed more noticeable in the last ten years than in any other time in the twentieth century, with one out of four Canadians identifying themselves as black, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander, Metis or Native. (Gould 1995: 198)Most people, from educators to philosophers, agree that an important first step in successfully joining multiple cultures is to develop an understanding of each others background. However, the similarities stip there.
Canada is comprised of many ethnic backgrounds. Multiculturalism plays a major role in today’s mosaic society. Following the Second World War, Canada welcomed multiple ethnic cultures into the country. Even though multiculturalism may not work for other countries, Canada has been quite successful in implementing and maintaining a positive name for multiculturalism. Policies put in place help regulate and draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable.
Because of my culture, it has allowed for me to be more understanding of those that are different from me. The recognition of what it is to be different from what normal American culture may look like has brought forth a new and deeper level of empathy without even realizing. Growing up in a diverse area where my group of friends came from a wide variety of backgrounds has helped me to see the similarities we share as well as getting more acquainted and understanding of why certain groups do the things that they do. With that being said, I recognize that though I may be more equipped to related with people from different backgrounds a bit more than someone else, I know that I may still face some challenges (especially with how this nation is when it comes to race and cultural relations). As a social worker, a bit part of my profession is to create societal change.
Living in an immigrant family, I learn a lot about both cultures and understand most reason on why things are the way they are. There are plenty of things I didn’t get to experience while I was younger and mostly because of my parent’s traditions and their beliefs about how I should have been raised. There were also a lot of things that indirectly caused me to succeed in, because of different lifestyle. There are plenty of things that happen to people like me, some of the more popular ones are: Getting good grades in school; Having a very small social life; Becoming well mannered; Never getting complimented
Growing up for me some would say it was rather difficult and in some ways I would agree. There have been a lot of rough times that I have been through. This has and will affect my life for the rest of my life. The leading up to adoption, adoption and after adoption are the reasons my life were difficult.
Culture is the substance of who we essentially are in life. It identifies the kind of values and practices that are learned from church, home and even the surrounding community. In addition to these learned beliefs and values, we also learn from music, food, health remedies, and sports which symbolizes something unique in a culture. Furthermore, our culture is the key to how we view and perceive the world as well. A lot of times we don’t realize that our culture can be subsequently be used as a tool to communicate and socialize with others. In recent, it has been brought to my understanding that people determine who are by examining which side of the city you come from. Having an awareness of one’s own culture gives an individual sense of pride and understanding of their life.
Culture, where and how a person is raised, affects a person no matter how much they dislike the way they are being taught the ways of life. However, moving to different places as a child and coun...
Different cultures, or environments make up how people live their lives and how they may act on a daily basis. These cultures are common all throughout the world, even throughout the different places within the United States. Going on my school trip to New York City made me aware of these cultures changes and when are plane landed back in Minnesota I was so thankful to be back to the places and faces I had always been used to.
To conclude, cultures are a major part of our lives and they constitute the image we see the world in. cultures can sometimes influence us, even in ways we don’t expect. Sometimes we find ourselves forced in cultures with negative stereotypes but that does not mean we should be ashamed of those cultural groups but rather embrace our culture and stray from the negative characteristics of that

Our diversity in cultures and nationalities also gives us a “taste” of the rest of the world, the authenticity becomes more real as we can experience a country’s true traditional food or holiday. To me, this attribute shows that people who have immigrated here have picked Canada for a specific reason that they believe is important. Although it’s a stereotypical reputation, Canada is known to be a safe place with polite people, this is probably appealing to many who live in unsafe or war-torn countries. The fact that many countries see Canada in a positive way and that we have such a multicultural population makes me feel proud to be a part of Canada. I believe this characteristic makes our country as a whole more colourful and vibrant in the cultural sense, as well as exciting and
Identities that are developed in different ways in different cultures are cultures learned through your culture (Martin & Nakayama, 2011.) My Mexican culture has taught me that family is the most important thing in my live. I depend on all my family and trust in each and every one of them. I am really close to all my family and even my extended family. Especially now that I am a mother, I hope to aspire that value in my daughter’s life.
