How to grow a Lizard Capable of accomplishing anything, my five-year-old self set out on a mission during the summer of 1996. Eager to begin my excursion, I woke up that morning and could not wait to get outside. “Today’s the day I’m going to prove to my brothers that I’m just as sneaky and fast as they are”, I said to myself. Each year, my brothers would always go outside and catch lizards (also known as Skinks), frogs, snakes, etc. all throughout the summer, but this year it’s my turn. Scoping out the best “lizard” places for weeks had finally built up my confidence enough that I finally felt ready for some action. After diligently trying, not only did I not catch one, but I had broken his tail. “Oh no,” I exclaimed to myself, “mother is going to be so angry, as she had told me several times to be careful not to hurt any skinks”. Panic soon overwhelmed me, and before long, I was sitting on the ground crying. Presumably I had been there for approximately 15 minutes before my eldest brother, Chad, found me. Describing to him what had happened was humiliating, but he responded by telling me that it was a part of nature, and another one would grow in its place. Skeptical of what he had said, I decided there was only one logical solution to finding out the truth. Returning to the house, I asked my mother about what Chad had told me, however, I did not date tell her why. Once I confirmed that this was indeed true, a sense of relief swept over me. Beaming with joy, I skipped back outside to retrieve the tail that I had previously concealed in the bushes. Mind-boggling news such as this is life-changing for a 5-year-old, especially considering that this additional information had completely transformed what I had originally considered the worst day of my life, into the most exhilarating day of my life. I might not have caught a lizard, but soon, a lizard was going to grow out of this tail and all I needed to do was wait for it to
