When I was around the age of eight years old I grew a strange attachment and fascination with the "Rolling Stones" famous red lip logo. I first saw the pair of lips in the window of a local record store which was somehow still open at the the time. Having no knowledge of the band or their music I began replicating the lips on printer paper with my school set of crayons. Because I was unaware of the band to get a reference image I googled "lip logo" which not only provided me with the image I wanted but also several images of clip art lipstick marks. I drew the logo on my notebook, on my desk, and even on a pair of light wash denim jeans I had which my mom made me remove. For easter that year I got a rolling stones tee-shirt which was
Young people have always flocked to cool trends. Exciting fads that identify a person as exotic and radical. But, does a trend go too far when the effects become permanent? Oberlin students don’t think so. Stick and poke tattoos are a popular fashion choice for a lot of students, and just like regular tattoos, the ink lasts forever.
Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion by Gregory Boyle is one of the most inspirational book I have ever read. The book is comprised of multiple different stories from the life and work of the author himself, which makes this a realistic experience for the reader. These stories are of the Homeboys of Homeboys Industries, an organization founded by Father G, or Greg, in hopes of finding the light for gangs in California.
The artist that I compare my work with the most is Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins. For many years, I have studied his work and the style of the old school tattoo as I have always planned on becoming a tattoo artist myself. Now that I have finally begun my tattoo apprenticeship, I truly appreciate the similarities and differences that Collins and myself share.
Not only do they have historical value, but they also have story telling power. In the sculpture Hermes Infant Dionysis there is a story of protection is being told. The gaze of trust is a powerful message being conveyed through the sculpture. (Hermes Infant Dionysos, n.d.) We see another strong story being told in
My research to date significantly influenced how I selected and organized my images. I plan to research more examples of religious works of art that depict each religious standpoint on the Dome of the Rock. I was pleasantly surprised that there were more of these types of images than I was expecting. Because it seems that my use of images will be a main component in my research, I will most likely include some sort of image reference section in my final paper.
Modern humans have been around for 200,00(0) years and throughout their brief existence they have had the advantage of intelligence over every other creature in history. They have had the opportunity to travel through space, explore the depths of the ocean, and experience every landscape imaginable; however, humans as a species are shrouded in mystery. They have had different cultures and customs spread across the globe, and in many ways it is difficult to know what life is like in cultures apart from their own, for they do not share the same lifestyle or upbringing. There are some things that are universal as far as human cultures go: smiling to show joy, crying to show pain, loving those whom they are close to, and...tattoos. Whether they are loved or hated, humans have been branding themselves with tattoos for a variety of reasons for thousands of years – tattoos are becoming more popular and accepted all the time.
Every day, tattoos have become apart of almost everyones daily life. Wether it be simply seeing someone with some on the street, to giving hundreds of them a day. While admiring their beauty, however, many people don’t think about the history behind the practice and how they have developed over the centuries. Tattoos have been around for thousands of years. One of the earliest evidence of tattoos being practiced was from the Iceman found with tattoos from the area of the Italian and Austrian border and was carbon dated to be around 5200 years old. Matching it's time, they use long one stakes dipped in soot.
As a child, the idea of such majestic creatures performing right before your very eyes
When I was younger, and even to this day I have always enjoyed sweets, and candy. One day, as a child, I was in the living room by myself eating lifesavers; the hard candy type. The way I would eat the lifesavers would be to suck them until they were not as hard and then bite them into smaller pieces to swallow. However, before I was able to bite into it while sucking on it I accidentally swallowed it. Once it was stuck in my throat I panicked because no matter how many times I tried to swallow it would not go down. I went to go get my mom who was thankfully home in her room. Once I got her she was panicking as well concerned about the fact that I was choking. She then called my Dad and asked him what to do, He then told her to calm down and get some water for me and told her to tell me to drink slowly, and keep drinking until it melted.
The word pentagram originates from the Greek pentagrammon, “having five lines” (pente “five” and gramma “character”. The pentagram is a five pointed shape where each point of a 5 sided polygon (pentagon) circumscribed around a circle is connected by one continuous line that travels internally, from 3 o’clock, to 8 o’clock, to 12 o’clock, to 4 o’clock, to 9 o’clock, and back to 3 o’clock. Neither the circle, nor the pentagon, is part of the shape. The shape results from the line that connects the points, which can be drawn in one continuous motion. It is most often referred to as a star shape.
The Twilight Zone aired an episode in 1960 called The Four of Us Are Dying. The episode follows a con man capable of changing his appearance by merely looking at the person he wants to become. His whole life he has slipped by, without a conscience, using his ‘talent’ to mold into other established people’s lives. He takes advantage of his ability and finds ways to rob his victims of their identities, fame, and personal acquaintances. In today’s pop culture, especially pop music, this flagrant disrespect for culture and counterfeiting of style are diminishing the credibility of many popular artists. Similar to the man in The Twilight Zone episode, there are artists in the spotlight today that need to be reconsidered for their ‘unique’ styles.
Meanwhile, I drew skull and crossbones on my blue jeans with my thin black marker on my right pant leg. Drawing calmed me.
My sister and parents have settled on henna as an acceptable form of body art, as opposed to piercings, tattoos, or even hair dye. My sister's artistic talents and desire to decorate herself have been evident since she was little when she longed for the day she could wear the makeup that mom donned every Sunday. One morning, my sister's desire and daring five-year-old spirit got the better of her, and she snuck a tube of bright red lipstick to church. Our mother was mortified, but most of the congregation thought it amusing to see Anna's crimson lips.
Have you ever done something amazing that changed your image and got you an identity? My strongest identity would be a Nerd and I received this title from some significant experiences in my life which also changed my image among my peers. My first experience was that I memorized the entire periodic table of elements at which all of my peers in Science class were amazed and gave me the identity of a Nerd. One of my other experiences was that in Grade 10 Mathematics my peers and other people noticed my passion in Math and my determination to solve Math Challenges which people admired and my identity as Nerd became stronger with this event. My most recent experience was in my Careers Course from the second half of the first semester of Grade 10 when I had presented strong content in my projects related to the Career I wanted to pursue. All of my class members highly admired my details and from this event my identity as a Nerd had never been stronger.
