Lexi Weier 3/18/16 3rd Hour Personal Narrative Swishing, splashing, sloshing, and all the screams of kids were all you heard when you walked into the steam filled waterpark, Avalanche Bay. It was spring break of 2013. I had gone there on vacation for two days with my best friend Sarah, we had heard about a new addition that goes by the name, “The Big Couloir”. The Big Couloir was an extremely intimidating waterslide. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into that day. When Sarah and I had finally arrived to Avalanche Bay, we headed straight towards the waterpark. As we approached the inside of the water park we noticed an enormous crowd of people standing by one water slide particular, “The Big Couloir”. This water slide was something …show more content…
Standing in line was definitely the worst part of the process. As I was standing there watching the mouth of the slide open as if it was going for another piece of food. My heart was beating so fast it felt like It was going to pound out of my chest at any second. The line grew shorter and shorter and eventually it was my turn. The lifeguard pressed the button that opened the door and then told me step in, she then told me to cross my feet and cross my arms over my chest as if I were going to do a sit up. Then the words that came out her mouth next were ones I really did not want to hear. “Are you ready”? Said the lifeguard as she pressed the button that shut the door without even acknowledging whether I said I was ready or not, and that is when I realized there was no backing out of this now. When she shut the door my face started turning red and my breathing got heavier and heavier, once the door was shut I was told to lean my head back against the wall so I wouldn’t hit it on anything once the floor dropped out from under me. I felt the cold water running through my hair and down my back like i was standing in the
“In the other walls an x-ray of the same woman revealed the contracting journey of the refreshing beverage on its way to her delighted stomach! Abruptly the room took off on a rocket flight into the clouds. … A minute later, Three White Cartoon Clowns chopped off each other’s limbs. … Two more minutes and the room whipped out of town to the jet cars wildly circling an arena …”
Forty hands shot up pointing towards the bottom of the old twisty slide following the long dreadful whistle no one ever wants to hear. Two other lifeguards and I jumped up off the shaded break bench and rushed towards the scene with the heavy backboard and AED bag in hand. The routine save played like a movie through my head as I arrived. I stopped. I knew from there on out this wasn't going to be emotionally an easy save. It wasn't a child who swallowed too much water or an adult who got nervous because they forgot how to swim, it was a fellow lifeguard, a friend.
First, there is the Raging River. Through the beautiful wooded area of the park, this slide, simulating a ride down rapids, is open to riding by yourself or with a partner. Next, there is the Blackout where you plummet down a twisty slide in total darkness. Following the Blackout is the Twister, the slide where you go into a 360 degree loop, again, either by yourself or with a friend. If you are feeling competitive, the Double Down is a double laned slide where you race someone to the end! This water slide, called the Splash Down, has steep drops where you slide headfirst on a mat into sharp, fast turns. CAT 4 is many people’s favorite, including my brother. This slide is where you fly down a hilltop drop then splash into Lake Lanier. CAT 4 has four lanes, so you can go with a lot of people. The most exhilarating sides are side by side, the Intimidator and Triple Threat. On the Intimidator, you practically slide straight down, while on the Triple Threat, you experience three heart-pounding drops. Finally, the Typhoon, famous for its high turns and rapid decline, this slide gives you the impression of a real Typhoon. These water slides at LanierWorld are sure to appeal to seventh
Have you ever felt the rushing wind on your face while spiraling through the air? Well if so, then you have probably been on a roller coaster. This October was the first time that I have been on a roller coaster. Traveling with a group of friends, went to the Haunt Night at Worlds of Fun. It was quite an thrilling experience. There were zombies and goblins prowling around, waiting to give you a scare. When we were on our way I was nervous, but excited. As we all trudged up, Keeshawn, Paige, Makenna, Cooper, Katie, and I went to the first ride, The Patriot.
This was a very difficult Journal for me. As I tried to think back to my childhood, I could
There were less than twenty-five people in the water, so I was guarding by myself while the other lifeguards took a break. I took note of a woman who was in the water with three children under the age of ten years old. The children looked to be average swimmers for their age, but the mediocre supervision of their guardian concerned me. Ten minutes into my shift, I heard a scream for help from the deep end of the pool. As I turned around, I saw a young girl flailing her arms and struggling to keep her head above the water. It was one of the children that I had been keeping an eye on. I immediately jumped towards her and landed behind her, much to my own surprise. She was at least five metres away from me, but the apparent rush of adrenaline allowed me to jump right to her. I grabbed her around her waist and sat her on my hip in the standard lifeguard carry. I made my way to the side of the pool deck where my supervisor was waiting to help me reassure the child and report the
“Come on, guys,” I yelled at my family, which consists of my mom Madonna, my father John, and my two sisters Alissa and Kara, as I ran frantically across the jam-packed parking lot to the opening gate that led to a world of adventure. As wide as the world around, my eyes pierced at the doorway to a world of fun. Families, of all sizes, were enjoying all the possibilities of fun. Hearing laughter and frightening screams, warned me of the experience waiting for me within the doorway to everlasting amazement. The sweet baked smell of funnel cakes swarmed into the fresh morning air. Before I knew it, my family and I were ready to enter Valleyfair, an amusement park that offers summertime fun to the maximum.
As the line for the Grizzly roller coaster at California’s Great America expanded, the loud screaming noises from people above us as they ride the roller coaster at tremendous fast speed. The big tv screen that displayed hilarious pictures of people’s faces as they approached the first drop on the roller coaster.Children legs were shaking uncontrollably as if they were on a cold winter day when they deboarded the roller coaster.Instantly I realized that I am going to encounter my fear of riding a roller coaster with one of my best friends,Stacey, and my sister,Jenny.I had butterflies in my stomach as my heartbeats accelerated as I approach near the seating of the roller coaster.I have waited twelve years to experience the rush of adrenaline
2012 was my first year as a lifeguard and I was working at Morse Park. I struggled at first during in-service especially on choking victims, but the significant part of that summer was the audit. Which is where the city does a practice scenarios where lifeguards perform their rescue skills with people and manager witnessing the entire thing, but to make this story more understanding you have to visualize the scene. In the far left hand corner of Morse is a blue slide that loops around twice, and it all started with a guy going down the slide head first, and of course with my luck I was the guard sitting in the chair closet to
After eating our sack lunches, our group of five decided to enter the park. I can hear the roller coaster tracks and machinery almost sounding like a train, watching the faces of the people. After...
Hi, I am Ryan. I am 12 years old, the oldest child in my family. I live on the east coast in Chatham, NJ. I’ve never been to the west coast, but my family and I planned this amazing road trip through Big Sur, California, and I am very excited! I love nature, and from what I’ve heard from friends, Big Sur tops the list when it comes to the scenery and natural beauty. There is almost no technology distraction because Big Sur is in the middle of nowhere. I look forward to disconnecting from technology, and spending quality time with my family. One downside is that I am afraid of heights, so I am not entirely sure how driving next to a cliff for hours is actually gonna go. Looking forward to the best driving experience of my life. I just hope I won’t get motion sickness.
I recall vividly staring into the mirror at myself in utter disgust thinking, “How have I let myself go this much”. The reality of my actions weighed on me like a ton of bricks and at that moment I realized I needed to change. I was depressed and hated what I had done to myself. Although I believed there was no way I could overcome this challenge, I did, and accomplishing this feat built me into the person I am today. Throughout my early years, I was always known as “the big kid”.
This week was a short week, with an early release Wednesday and no school for students Friday. Students were hyped up and ready for spring break. On Monday, we had state testing which students weren't happy about having to do this task. This was after specials, taking up the whole morning. The afternoon also went by quick because we had reading groups, which we discussed newspapers and journalism. This led to each student writing a news report related to our novel, A Long Way to Chicago. On Tuesday, we started the day by watching "This Day in History" from the History Channel. It's a short video portraying important things that occurred on a specific day. The kids love seeing these and it always leads us into a conversation about history and also current events. It was Barbies introduction into the world on Tuesday and students were interested in how Barbie was created, along with
After five o’clock two lifeguards are sent home and one of the spots we remove is first chair since high chair across the water also watches it. I tore across the pool, hurdled the peninsula completely and plunged into the water beside the girl. I don’t even remember the run, I was at my spot and the next thing I know I’m by this little girl in the water. Somewhere in-between that I also activated our EAP or emergency action plan which is three whistles. Normally when you are taking an unconscious victim out of the water you are supposed to put them on a backboard and pull them out
We finish what we start. This was the motto that kept me going during the strenuous training period for a marathon. But prior to that, I must confess, I wasn’t an athlete. I was never interested in playing sports, except for recreational badminton. During gym class, I would walk three quarters of the time when it time for the dreaded mile run. I preferred staying indoors and sitting on the couch and watch movies. The first time I had heard about a marathon training program, called Dreamfar, in my school, I thought to myself, what kind of crazy person would want to run a marathon? Never did I realize, eight months later, I would be that crazy person.
