This week was a short week, with an early release Wednesday and no school for students Friday. Students were hyped up and ready for spring break. On Monday, we had state testing which students weren't happy about having to do this task. This was after specials, taking up the whole morning. The afternoon also went by quick because we had reading groups, which we discussed newspapers and journalism. This led to each student writing a news report related to our novel, A Long Way to Chicago. On Tuesday, we started the day by watching "This Day in History" from the History Channel. It's a short video portraying important things that occurred on a specific day. The kids love seeing these and it always leads us into a conversation about history and also current events. It was Barbies introduction into the world on Tuesday and students were interested in how Barbie was created, along with …show more content…
how many dolls have been created since then. In math, we started a new concept which is multiplying two fractions. We talked about how this would look in everyday life. Many students related it to baking, proportioning things, and money. The concept was picked up easily and teaching them the "butterfly" method helped students go through the process. This is simplifying first and then multiplying, instead of multiplying then simplifying. Wednesday was early release, library check out and counselor. This limited our time in math and language arts. Due to the early release, we didn't have reading. Math was a review day from what was taught the day before and language arts was presenting historical figure first person speeches. This was a lot of fun for the students to guess who their peers researched based on the information and quotes they presented in their speech. It interesting to see the historical figures that the students selected. There was a wide variety which kept the speeches interesting. Thursday was a fun energetic day.
All my students were so excited for the day to end and for the beginning of spring break. I made sure that they wouldn't have any homework from me over the break. I was surprised to find out later that they had homework from a few other teachers. We did a lot of "craftivities" on Thursday. I did one with reading over prefixes and with language arts on affixes/root words. Math was a review day, somewhat of a pretest, to allow me to see where students are with area. With a partner, they played a game that was about finding the area of a square they got from rolling dice. Students seem to respond well to it and looking at their work made me feel confident in starting area and fractional parts after break. It worked very well incorporating craftivities into the lesson plan. We also celebrated the success of reading fifteen books by having a pizza party in the classroom. I'm also using an app called “Blabberize” where they make the mouth on a picture move while they record their poems. It looks like the picture is reading their poems! The student's love
it! We watched a video on flocabulary about area and perimeter. It's a website that has different subjects and people send in raps and hip hop beats along with short animated videos to go with the lesson. The students seemed to really enjoy collaborating music with the lesson. Friday was my first record and report day,. Luckily I was able to have everything turned in before 10 am. This left the rest of the afternoon free for prepping for when we come back from spring break. It was nice leaving that day knowing I had everything ready and organized by day and time before we left. In fact, I able to prepare for the next two weeks which is a great feeling. It's hard to believe that I have already completed seven weeks of student teaching. I've enjoyed getting to use the app “Blabberize”, craftitivies, Audible, and videos like the one I used this week from the History Channel. All of these resources help keep the students engaged. The experience was been wonderful and I've had great opportunities to use different strategies.
One of the main struggles within the lesson was how to effectively use time to cover all the goals of my plan. This lesson was challenged by the time constraints of having a 50-minute class period and a quiz that was taking 25 minutes of the class. When planning the lesson I thought it would be possible to place students in groups to do close reading questions. I quickly discovered, after doing poetry brackets at the beginning of class and then discussing the main points of Act I, there was very little time to actually do the activity. Students were only in groups less than 10 minutes and could not really look at the text too closely before I needed to move them on. I felt that this cause several problems with the presentation o...
They were given a article and had to underline what they felt what was important or significant. Then as a class, we went through paragraph by paragraph and discussed what we underlined. The students told Mrs. Sottoriva why they felt it was important or what it meant. I followed along with the students and I was impressed with the responses they gave. Mrs. Sottoriva also told the students what she underlined, this way they could underline it if they did not already. I really enjoyed this activity because it helped with the student’s comprehension. The students had to think about what is important and what it meant if they did not understand it.
Many girls of different ages fantasize about the perfect wedding, perfect husband, a gorgeous dress, and the happiness to come after the wedding. At one point I was just like these girls. I saw marriage as a paradise that everybody should experience. Around tenth- grade, my rose tinted glasses were removed and I witnessed just how bad a marriage could get to the point of divorce. The divorce my parents went through, changed my entire view on monogamy. I now see marriage in a more realistic point of view and that it is not an easy journey as I once had thought it was.
Personal Narrative: The World The world is a messed up place and we are all stuck here until our lives are through, or until we choose to leave. It's strange that I go along with everything everyone tells me, such as that I should wear certain clothes or listen to certain songs. I often wonder why I do the things I do, but then I just realize that's who I am. People are confused about why they are here, and they don't understand what life is supposed to be about.
For reading intervention, we did a color scavenger hunt. I had their color sight words on index cards, and they were to find something in the classroom that matched the color they read. For reading centers, we read the emergent readers. This is a book full of arctic animals, and HOT questions. After we read the story we did a different yoga pose for each animal. For ELA whole group, we read the story “Three Cheers For Tacky.” After reading the story, we filled out a story map. They had to recall information from the story to fill in thud map. For ELA centers, we analyzed Tacky. Je was the main character in the story we
During, the observation the teacher’s science lesson was amazing with the different units of studies that the teacher added to this unit. The teacher did a thematic unit on the state of Arizona because of Arizona’s celebrating it entrance to statehood on February 14. The school that the teacher works for does an Arizona Enrichment day with different activities. This unit that the teacher taught gave the students an introduction to what they would be learning on Thursday for their Enrichment activity along with learning science at the same time. I thought this was very creative. The teacher incorporated very little technology in this lesson, she had math, reading, social studies, and writing in this lesson on living and nonliving things in Arizna0. For th...
It seems unbelievable my oldest is a few days off being a decade old. I know every parent wonders “where has the time gone?” a multitude of times during their children’s childhoods, but as I realize my son is over halfway to 'adulthood' it seems like the time has flown by.
Task/Activity: Since it was “Career Day” during Spirit Week, it should be noted that students were rather “hyped up” and class was rather leisurely in anticipation of the upcoming schoolwide events taking place both that day and later in the week. As a result, both classes worked on their “Summative Assessment” packets handed out the day before. Students worked independently to read each passage and answer its corresponding multiple choice and/or open-ended questions. After students completed the packet, they then worked on an independent writing assignment on MyAccess covering the topic of their future career, considering the fact that it was “Career Day.”
I choose to work with these two students together because Jose level of comprehension is higher than Carlos. If Carlos had a difficult time Jose could help Carlos with what he did not understand. That week the teacher theme was Rainbows and Flowers. I based my activities with these two students on the theme of the week. The teacher had different stations set up through the classroom. I picked a section and brought the children to those stations. We did multiple different activities for example color matching game, puzzles, read books, painted, drawing and singing. I picked these activities with the students because they were more visual learners. These students need visuals to understand especially if they can not express them selves in the English language. Out of all the activities these two students enjoyed the books, singing and puzzles. The books I choose had a lot of visuals and repetition. After a while the students would pick up on certain vocabulary being said from the books. The books I choose had a lot of songs within the book. This made them very
Alzheimer is one of the top 10 causes of death in the US. The disease ranks the 6th, According to the realistic prognoses, this disease don't get any better over time. As a Caregiver I notice most of patients has this disease, my current patient was diagnosed with Alzheimer little bit over a year ago, there's a lot of challenges I go through with Sarah who's the patient which am i uncertain wether or not is related to her disease ..
Also, the material was interesting to their grade level and experiences. Furthermore, the students liked to share their thoughts and personal experiences, which leads to a more intimate learning process that can benefit the students to a greater extent. In addition, the short story had some facts that can be learned by the students and the drawing and coloring part at the end fueled the students by grabbing their attention, which reinforces what had been learned. However, what I would change was the way I introduced the lesson. I simply gave them the worksheet and we read it, but what I should have done is to have a quick discussion about what we are going to read to introduce them the genre. Moreover, I noticed that the students were having a difficult time looking for the answers in the text. However, I reminded them that it’s like looking for an item from our picture puzzles that we do for fun after homework is completed. After I said that to the students, they changed their attitudes toward it being difficult to it being fun. They were able to connect the search strategies that they acquire in the picture puzzles and implement them with the word search. So, the only difference is that they are now looking for words instead of
I did not realize it would take as much time as it did. Our group really wanted to get it right and perfect it as much as possible. I also discovered that collaboration enhanced the lesson’s creativity and variety of activities. I had previous ideas about what I thought would be good for each 5E section. After meeting with my fellow classmates multiple times throughout the weeks, I see now how the lesson plan got better and better each time we planned. It became more creative and included variation with activities. With lesson planning, I realized that it has to be detailed in order for the teacher to be fully prepared and be through as if a substitute teacher or another colleague was going to perform this lesson plan. At first, the lesson plan seemed tedious and going to be large commitment. After completing the lesson plan, I learned that every step and component had a purpose
In the beginning I was hesitant of having four first graders working together to decide and agree on five items. While walking around and checking in with the groups I realized the students were working together and were talking through the ideas together. I thought this aspect of the lesson was a success because the students are in groups of higher-level students and lower-level students, as I walked around I heard the lower level students explaining their thinking and teaching the higher-level
The light from the sun reflects off the pure white wall, illuminating the room. The dust floats, undisturbed by the empty house. This is what I see as I launch myself out the door, into the hot summer air, into the sounds of playing children.
It is hard to believe that the semester is almost over already. The time has really flown by because it feels like we just started a few weeks ago. This is because of how interesting this class was. The format that this class took was nice being able to interact with the other students through discussions rather that the form I am used to of just doing my assignment and never getting to know the other people in my class. It was nice to be able to see other people’s opinions and how they took in the lesson for that week. It was this interaction that helped to drive home may of the lesson this I had trouble understanding and reinforced my understanding for those I do. There are many different lessons that were explored throughout the semester
