"Reasons vary as to why teachers are reluctant, but the book hits on several that I personally relate to." I have experienced "constant change" in my career. In my mind I feel it is a result of poor leadership at the top. When you are faced with something different every year, a pointless circle, never giving the preceding "change" a chance to see if it works. This year, “this" next year change to "that", next year back to "this", the year after, mix a little of "this" with a bit of "that". I am being facetious, but when the upper admin does this it can make one derisive. In reality we all go through change all the time. Change is a word that I have constantly heard throughout my high school years. It is a transformation through which everyone goes whether it's for the better or for the worse. For me the meaning and value of change has helped me to focus on the goals I have to accomplish. For others, it is simply just a phase we go through. All of us here have been able to learn and develop from our changes to be come a better and successful person.
The first activity I did that was outside of my comfort zone was go to the weight room at the rec and lift weights. I have always wanted to start lifting weights again, but I was nervous about going to the weight room here. I have a smaller build, and I am not the strongest person so I didn’t want to embarrass myself. It was outside my box because I was worried other people lifting would judge me because I am not in the best shape. At first, when I went in the weight room I was intimidated because there were a lot of people, and most of them were in great shape. However, once I started lifting I realized that it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
In Jane Tompkins, A Life in School: What the Teacher Learned, Jane uncovers flaws in the American education system and how poorly formal education prepares pupils for careers after schooling. She describes how her teachers at P.S. 98 used authority to form the person she is now, teaching at Duke. Her experience dabbling in alternative teaching methods established the path she took throughout her career. Although Tompkins experience is atypical of most students, I agree with her argument about how fear is a successful means of motivation for those that can succumb to it, but alternatives exist that have been demonstrated and are successful.

In the passage, “Eleven” by Sandra Cisnero, the story is told through the perspective of an 11-year- old whose teacher refuses to listen to her side of the story. In paragraphs 10 through 11, Cisneros is forced to take custody of a red sweater despite it not belonging to her. Entailing that the teacher would rather not deal with finding the true owner and instead throws the responsibility onto Cisneros to handle the burden of the sweater rather than help her. In a personal experience, my fourth grade teacher compared me to the children traveling toward the gold rush in the 1850’s. I remember precisely him saying “Wow, I’m amazed that these kids walk miles and miles a day but some kids like Alexandra can’t even pass the mile.” Rather than being an adult and supporting a student new to the Clovis Unified practices in physical education, who was more so on the chubby side, the idea of making snide comments was a better option than encouragement. “Encouragement” such as this will lead to three paths: self-esteem issues, loss of faith and trust in school and the administrators, or proving to nonbelievers that one can surpass their negativities. Some people offer very little resistance to change, they consider it the spice of life; it prevents stagnancy and maintains excitement through diversity. Some people view change like the U.S. viewed Russia during the cold war, as an inevitable threat that we must constantly monitor and prepare for. Other people react to change like an ostrich reacts to danger. They just stick their head in a hole and pretend it doesn't exist. Change is constantly happening all the time to everyone in someway or another. Whether or not change is accepted does not alter the fact that it exists however the way you accept change can alter the way you exist.

One of the main reasons motivation and morale tend to decrease during any type of change is because humans are naturally resistant to change (Resistance to Change). People often tend to find a comfort zone in their jobs or company and are uncomfortable when any change is made to it. People like the feeling of being safe and protected and change often does not let them feel this way. It forces people out of their comfort zone and requires them to look at things differently. It can appear in many forms in the workplace and may be public or private (Craemer, 2011). People also have a parochial self-interest and will resist change if they believe they stand to loose something if change takes place. They will focus on how the change affects them and not on the overall outcome (Ferguson, 2004). Managers and change agents need to understand that resistance to change is natural.
Adapting to change I find is worthwhile in my eyes. I can see myself grow from what I learn and see by working on myself and change the way I use to think about the word change. I’m discovering that change is good for everyone, it breaks up the normal grove that everyone is in making the discover and learn how to adapt to change. He really hits home the fact that “victories are victories” (Kozol, 68) A teacher’s job and top priority is the success of the students and giving them the tools and lessons that they need to achieve. It is not limited to the skills and tools taught by the curriculum. Things like curiosity and critical thinking, humanity and empathy are needed as well. There is nowhere in the curriculums of today’s schooling that “delight”, “joy” or “kindness” is mentioned, which are just as important in schooling as the technical skills. (Kozol, 100). That’s really what I took away from the book, the need to incorporate these things in education to spark a student’s motivation for learning and growing.
Through my eyes, the word change provides a great part of life, change is inevitable. People must change, things must be modified, and animals must adapt. My personal belief upon change consists of the thought that no matter the stretches we take to avoid it, we cannot. We must alter along with the world we live in and become that intense act or instance of making or becoming different.
