Beginning this project, our group came to the same conclusion: physical therapy is definitely the direction we want to study. While other possibilities were thrown around, we quickly decided that as a group we were most interested by a career in physical therapy because it is a goal we are all striving to attain (with the exception of Ryon, who recently switched his major to Criminal Justice). Our logic was to pick a career that appealed to the most of us, and physical therapy was the career that won out. At some point in time, each of us has either seen or experienced a physical therapist at work, and we admire what they do. Our goal is to someday be able to help people in only a way that physical therapists can, and that is why we collectively decided to choose this career path. The majority of our group members are currently sophomores, meaning that we have most of our core classes out of the way and are soon to begin taking classes that actually pertain to our major. Our access database lists several possible contacts that can potentially help us gain an “in” to the physical therapy world. Teachers are a great option when looking for internships and should always be considered. Not only can these contacts help you get an opportunity to intern or observe somewhere, but they can also be useful as references to get into PT school, as well as knowledgeable sources for future jobs. Keeping a list of them in access is a great way to keep them organized as well as somewhere safe until the time comes to use them. Ever since I was little I have alway been very intrigued about physical therapy. Just the aspect of working with other people, and knowing I’m doing something to help them, interests me. This year on November 21st, I job shadowed with Rotert Physical Therapy, and it turned out to be everything I expected. Working with the children was the highlight of my shadow; it was everything I expected and more.
Entering my first year of college I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do. I still didn’t choose a major let alone a career. I was stuck in between wanting to make enough money that my family would be taken care of financially and choosing a career that I wouldn’t mind going in to work every day. The one thing that I was certain of was that I wanted to be able to help people in whatever I chose to do. After careful consideration and exploring the options available to me, I have come to the conclusion that I want to have a career in physical therapy. Physical therapy is the treatment of disease, injury or deformity through physical methods rather than through drugs or surgery.
From a young age I was interested in the medical field. As I became more exposed to the various options, I decided physical therapy was the right career for me. My experience has proved the field to be interesting and fun. I enjoy working with people and the versatility of therapy. There are many areas to specialize in and I look forward to learning which one is right for me. At the moment I am interested in pediatric acute care but I am also interested in sports and orthopedics. As I continue my studies, I look forward to learning about the different fields in which physical therapy will take me. My future views may change which physical therapy field I wish to pursue, but right now I look forward to learning as much as I can about physical therapy and helping others.

I immigrated from South Africa in 1991. My original plan was not really to immigrate, but to come to the United States for a couple of years to gain work experience and pay off student loan debt. The US government had a list of professions at the time, in which it needed professionals. They issued work permits and HIB-Visas to foreigners to fills these gaps in the states. My chosen profession of Occupational Therapy was on the list, which made the process much easier. I planned to return home to South Africa after two years. The value of the US Dollar at the time was about R3.00 and so earning money in dollars helped me pay off my student loans much more quickly.
Since I was in the 3rd grade, I have always wanted to pursue my career as a physical therapist. It interest me because my grandma had a physical therapist at home. This therapist was the most kind and loving woman who made the job look fun and interesting. When seeking a career as a physical therapist a person should look at aspects such as one’s responsibilities necessary skills, plus other important aspects such as working conditions, salary and future of the job; however just as important is to carefully seek out the institution of higher learning that will best prepare one for this profession such as The University of Texas in Austin.
