As an Operations Specialist, I have an immeasurable amount of experience to offer recruiting. In the ten years I have served, I have had the opportunity to interact and work with all 19 active duty ratings in the Coast Guard. I have also conducted operations in the eleven Coast Guard mission areas. This invaluable experience makes me an ideal candidate to recruit the best possible applicants to conduct these multi-missions and fill these critical specialties. For years I have aspired to become a part of an elite organization such as the military, and more importantly, the United States Navy. Its reputation for instilling high moral character was encouragement for me to develop into a more mature, responsible, and independent young citizen. There are certain qualities that an officer must possess such as: honor, courage, commitment, and attention to duty, responsiveness to orders, cooperation, loyalty, leadership, integrity, and discipline. Throughout my high school career, I showcased these qualities while an active member of The American Legion of Ohio Buckeye Boy’s State, The National Honor Society, as a leader in the Ohio State Highway Patrol Junior Cadets, Clay and Waite High School Marching Band Alumni, Quiz Bowl, and Top Ten Scholars. There are many things that have impacted my life in a positive way as a result of my military service. For starters, joining the Navy was huge. It got me organized and opened my eyes to an entirely new world, and not just the military service world. The variety of experiences that I’ve had in the service interacting with people from all over the world has helped me grow as a person. However, from the day I entered service, one item or one rank in the structure of the Navy struck me as critical to the operation of the Navy. That item or rank was the position of the Chief Petty Officer. As I entered service I quickly discovered that the Chief was the go to guy and the old saying “ask a chief” had a profound meaning. The Chief was a leader, mentor, and an expert in just about everything, all qualities that I lacked at the time. Then, twelve or so years later, the life changing event for me of being selected as a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy came to fruition.
This career is important to society because every great nation needs warrior’s battle ready to defend it from oncoming threats and onslaughts. These brave young men and women defend and fight for those who can’t do it for themselves. Fighting a war test a soldier’s skill but defending his home tests a soldier’s heart. In conclusion, the ability for sailors to better their career has been taken out of their hands, and relies too much on external entities. Advancement is not based on one’s abilities to excel at his or her job, but by hoping they earn more money for the commands Navy Day Ball, they must have faith that the standardized test will cover their job field, and that the writing ability of their superiors is good enough to keep them competitive. Once these aspects under the advancement criteria are changed, the navy as a whole will start seeing more effective leaders who understands their jobs, understand their people, and more closely reflect the ideals and traits required in today’s leaders.
In the Marine Corps, there are many ways to achieve mission accomplishment. Two ways that stand the most for me are time management and accountability. I believe that in any type of career out there, time management and accountability are major keys but lately I have been failing to do that. These traits are something I have to try my best to work on so I am able to be successful in my career as a Marine.
I served as a Veterans Service Officer and Contract Compliance Officer at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Salisbury North Carolina. Duties included assisting Veterans and their family members in applying for VA benefits through both the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This required me to have knowledge of various laws, regulations, and policies of both the VBA and the VHA. As a Contract Compliance Officer, I monitored the day-to-day operations of the Facility Contractor and ensured Veterans were receiving the appropriate standard of health care, which was in part, funded with monies appropriated from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs budget.

I would encourage any Chemical Operation Specialist in the Army to be a part of these units at some point in their career. It stands to benefit them in their career and help them to become a better rounded soldier.

Possessing a shared understanding of the operational environment will aid in our planning process when conducting operations throughout our theater of operation. In every operation we execute we know that we will accept prudent risks, identification and mitigation of those risks will determine our ability to accomplish our mission. Incorporating the principles of mission command by building cohesive teams through mutual trust, fostering an environment of shared understanding, and accepting prudent risk will make me an effective adviser to the commander, aid the staff during the operations process, and provide an example for Soldiers to emulate. My involvement in all aspects of mission command is critical to the success of our organization.
In summary, my Air Force story highlights my journey to becoming an officer in the USAF. It takes into account my Puerto Rican heritage and values and advocates the benefits of maintaining a diverse workforce. My role as a Force Support officer has placed me in situations and enabled the experiences which have shaped my understanding of the profession of arms and better developed me as a leader. Lastly, my contributions to the Air Force mission, at home station or in the area of operations (AOR), have facilitated Airmen at all levels (Tactical, Operational, Strategic) within our Air Force and enabled them to make informed decisions affecting their careers and quality of life.
My ethical and moral views, beliefs, attitudes and values have been fashioned by an up bringing that centred on Christian beliefs. Even though religion was not forced upon me as a child, my mother raised us all with a strong sense of right and wrong. Along with the influence of my family, the Navy has had a big influence on the person I am. The Navy has a strong ethos of what is expected of the personnel that serve; this is made up of the following: Leadership, High Professional Standards, and Courage in Adversity, Determination, Loyalty, Mutual Respect, Discipline, A Sense of Humour, Teamwork, and A Can Do Attitude. Most recently of all though, the biggest thing that has influenced me as a person and a parent has been my experiences of working with young people. This includes acting as a Youth Advisor for Portsmouth City Council, a Mentor for Barnardos and a Youth Advisor for East Sussex County Council. I am currently working in two secondary schools as part of my resettlement from the Navy. This has given me the experience of working with young people living in virtual poverty, in constant trouble with the Police and education services and some young people with varying levels of disabilities. This work has given me a good ability to stay impartial, to be non judgemental and has given me a capacity to treat people a lot more emphatically than I was ever able to. This is because I have been exposed to a greater range of problems and personalities than I have been used to in the Navy. These are qualities that I will hopefully be able to transfer into my coaching practice.
